Ford Ranger, a 4x4 you can't engage on the road...

⭐⭐ Not everything is bad.... 😁
Ford have apparently designed a 4WD system that is unusable on the road but justify this by saying that the Ranger is designed to be driven off road!!! You can't use the 4WD without the Diff being locked which means when turning, the Ranger stops dead because the wheels need to be rotating at different speeds. The only way you can move forward at this point is to rev the engine, probably damaging the Diff and certainly the tyres. Common sense to me and every other manufacturer to have the Diff unlocked on the road but not to Ford apparently. Range Rover, Mitsubishi and all the other manufacturers of 4WD vehicles that I have owned allow for the Diff to only be locked in 4WD Low Ratio which is fine BUT NOT IN 4WD HIGH RATIO!!!! Uncontrollable, dangerous, deathtrap but Ford are happy with that.... I'm sure it says in the Highway Code that you need to be in control of the vehicle at all times, how can you be in control of a Ford Ranger when you are having to rev it so much just to get it moving.
Unfortunately, all Ford will tell me is that this is the way it is designed, to be an accident waiting to happen, apparently.
You use 4WD on roads that have variable conditions, you don't know when you are going to need that extra traction! To say you only use 4WD off road is ridiculous Mr Ford Top Tech Guy.

*Update 3* I've changed the title, but it still reflects my concern. Thanks for all the constructive feedback and tuition from some of you. It really is a shame Ford UK, and their Main Dealers know less about their own vehicles than the owners. This would never have been posted if they did.
*Update 2* So many 'experts' commenting. Shame the experts at Ford didn't have the answers you guys have given. I'm pretty easy going through but I don't accept that because it has always been that way it should never change. 21st century engineering means that I should be able to have 4WD when I want it and for the car not to be dangerous when it is engaged on tarmac. It's a pity there are dinosaurs that like the Anglo-Saxon phrases so much, and just accept things. My 10 yo son is more open minded than some of the commenters. Some good comments though 😁
*Update* Lots of angry 4x4 and Ford fans on here. Only pointing out that nowhere does it say, 'YOU CAN'T DRIVE THIS IN 4x4 ON THE ROAD WITHOUT KILLING YOU or the VEHICLE'..

You want a all wheel drive bud. You dont understand the 4wd system you should not use 4wd on a ground with traction.
@djdafish
@djdafish 5 лет назад
If you are attempting to get up that drive, and its snowy/icy enough to actually need 4WD then it will work perfectly as it will be a low traction surface. If you aren't losing traction when trying to drive up there, or indeed anywhere else you ever need to go, you can leave it in 2H. Basically if your wheels are skipping around as you are demonstrating, that means you have engaged 4WD when you absolutely 100% didn't need to.

Nothing wrong with your truck buddy. It's designed to be used in 4wd only when offroad and this is because it doesn't have a centre differential.

Yep, I'd come from AWD Range Rovers before. When the wheels started to rub on this, I went to the Ford Dealer and said something was wrong. If the Mechanic had been able to talk me through the fact that there was no centre diff at the dime instead of scratching his head and saying he didn't know what the problem was, I wouldn't have done the vid. Thanks for the reply though👍

You are experiencing transmission wind up.All pick ups,in fact any vehicle with part time 4WD will do this.They are not designed to be driven on dry roads like this,only in a straight line.

@thomashrb

Wow lots of criticism, but not a lot constructive. Firstly most vehicles labeled as 4WD are not truly 4WD. Most of them are AWD (All wheel drive). A true 4WD vehicle operating in 4WD will have all the differentials fully locked making it extremely hard to turn if you are not on a lose surface (mud, ice, clay sand etc); and there are very few of those on the market today (Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, 70 Series Land Cruiser, G-Series Mercedes etc) so the OP can hardly be blamed for not knowing any better. Most Modern 4WD vehicles today can only lock the center differential, some can also lock the rear differential, and even fewer can actually lock the front differential. Most (inverted comma) 4WD's today rely on electronic traction control or limited slip differentials to simulate 4WD characteristics, and can in some situations out perform a traditional locked differential system (especially when making a tight turn where you need low range but are on a dry solid surface). Traditional Pickup's like the Ford Ranger/Toyota Hilux/Nissan Navara/Mitsubishi L200 (Triton) etc are equipped with part time 2WD/4WD systems (disconnecting center differential). They are Rear Wheel Drive up until the moment you engage the 4WD system. At this point the center differential locks forcing the front wheels and rear wheels (not left and right) to turn at the same rate. High range and Low range changes the gearing (torque multiplication) from the transmission to the drive-line, but once the 4WD system is engaged your center differential is locked. This is the normal behavior of a part-time 4WD system. Many Manufacturers have adopted an AWD system for their line of SUV's (Mitsubishi Pajero (shogun)/Toyota Landcruiser 200 series/Nissan Patrol etc). An AWD system does not have a disconnecting differential in the center; it instead they have a permanently connected open differential. Having a permanently connected open center differential does not make the vehicle any safer than a 2WD (front or rear). In any differential drive system (especially open differentials) the wheel with the least resistance receives the most torque. In this case traction and torque are inversely related, so a AWD can and shall become a 1WD just as easily as a 2WD can. What you need sir is traction control. Either electronic traction control or limited slip differentials or torque vectoring differentials but without traction control; in a slippery situation you have a 1WD. Most modern vehicles have fairly advanced traction control systems now days, some less effective than others but the fact that you are experiencing drive binding indicates that your rear wheels have more than enough grip on the road and that being in 4WD is unnecessary. I myself have a similar system, and there are times even when I am off-roading where I have to disengage 4WD in order to execute a tight turn (where I know I have enough traction). I know where you are coming from in terms of safety and no one can dispute that traction control with 4 wheels is better than traction control with 2 wheels, and to that end I really wish the makers of pickup's would do what Volkswagen has done with the Amarok and make their pickups AWD's. I am sure Toyota could use the same system that is in the LC Prado and put it in the Hilux, or Nissan could put the Patrol's transmission in the Navara. I would really love it if I could have my gear ratios's separated from the differential lockers. There have been so many times when I wanted the control of first gear low without the hassle of locked differentials (parking ramps at the super market). Unfortunately many many vehicles today have so much torque than a small dab and you fly forward, so my personal wish is for the lockers to be once again independent of the gearing range.

I'm afraid you've made a complete fool of yourself from the word go here. 4WD IS just for thick snow and muddy fields. You can't just engage 4H on tarmac, you said it yourself, it'll rip the wheels apart. The distance each wheel is having to travel is so different front to rear and right to left that the transfer case just doesn't have that sort of play. Keep it in 2, till be more than enough to get up that poor excuse for an incline. Besides, you're better off reversing it up or you'll end up running over someone's dog as you back Down the drive.
@CloughReviews
@CloughReviews 6 лет назад
Why switchable Diff lock up to this point then?
@mattmanix5104
@mattmanix5104 6 лет назад
How do you mean? the problem youre having isnt the difference in wheel speed from theft to right ifs front and rear. Vehicles with permenant AWD get around this by having a centre diff to seperate front and rear but because we have selectable 4WD we dont so the front and rear axles must be allowed to turn at the same speed which they can only do in a straight line or when on loose surfaces where the wheels can slip a little bit.
@CloughReviews
@CloughReviews 6 лет назад
Got you, I though it was side to side not front to back. The turn at the bottom of the road cant be completed unless in 4WD when snow on floor though and the incline is impossible without it in snow. I get the 'feedback' on here Matt, and I'm pretty tech minded and pick things up quickly but this wouldn't even have been posted if Ford UK had their act together with customer service. I wasted 2 days on site with the dealer and still haven't got clarification on the issue I raised with them about not being able to put in 4WD on a road that has changeable conditions. I've had more information from the saner posts on here, like yours.
@mattmanix5104
@mattmanix5104 6 лет назад
I thought it was side to side on mine too when i came off a feild and forgot to change but then read up on it. In the snow youd be fine using the 4H as the snow will let the tires slip a little though I rekon you'd be suprised what the traction control in the ranger will do in 2H. So has no one at ford tried talking you through this then? BTW, now that you've driven it on tarmac on road you've likely wound quite a lot of tension into the drive train. If I were you I'd put it on a flat surface and jack up each wheel individually so the drive shafts can unwind.
@CloughReviews
@CloughReviews 6 лет назад
Cheers Matt, I'll do that.

Ok let's get something straight, if you read your manual you would realize, 4wd isn't design for pitch or tarmac. 4wd engages all wheels where the differential locks whether high or low. It means all wheels spins at the same speed which creates your problem at full lock and if you think carefully , loose driving surfaces are suited to this option, so keep it in 2WD and spring your pockets for winter tires, that is if your concerned about your children, ps get an AWD vehicle that should do the trick and don't forget the winter tires...
@CloughReviews
@CloughReviews 6 лет назад
Got you, no arguments with what you are saying (other than getting winter tyres, nobody does it in England as the majority of roads are gritted and it is a Temperate Climate unlike the US/Canada and a lot of Europe so for exceptions, it isn't worth it, also that's why I get 4x4's), I get why it does it does it now although the main dealers need a lesson or two from you guys. It doesn't change that this isn't explained when buying it, and as there are an awful lot of 4x4's out there now, manufacturers need to be stepping there game up instead of sitting on the info in the manual that says 'Don't use on Tarmac', that's a little too late and it cant be hard to develop a better system, others have .
@Seymour890
@Seymour890 6 лет назад
Well, just a tip try, doing to research on the vehicle you buy and the features it has, goes a long way, so you don't have an irregular expectation from what is needed, it's your responsibility to do so. The dealers job is to sell, not educate your needs. Your job is to be educated so you but to your needs, hope it helps..

I love the Ranger for everything else, no intention of getting rid of it. I wouldn't have posted the video if Ford had managed to explain the reason for the binding in the month and a half from when I had first taken it into them saying I had an safety issue. Like I said, I get what you are saying but if Ford salespeople and there main dealer top 'Techs' sit in the car and have no idea what the issue is then there is a bigger issue than me not going the over tech detail in fine detail

I know this video is old, and you likely understand how the 4WD works now. I just wanted to say I've always driven my trucks in winter on the roads but only when it's slick, snow patches etc. Like you said it's fine for straight or very slight turns on the highway, but it's not meant for dry and sharp turns or you get wheel hop and binding of the drivetrain. If the road is fully covered in snow then I leave it in 4WD and even on streets in town with sharp corners but if it road becomes dry then I switch it back to 2WD. What you need is an AWD which is meant to be driven on dry roads and can slip where needed. They are meant to be easier to drive so you don't have to think about it as much, and tend to be on smaller vehicles - but not usually on trucks. My wife's car is AWD and she can zip up into our driveway with ease where with my big 4WD truck I need to switch into 4WD if I wasn't already to make it up, that's just how 4WD works, at least in every brand/model truck I'd had it in over the last 30+ years. Anyway, good luck, I hope you either got used to it or switched to an AWD (which sounds like is what you need)
@CloughReviews
@CloughReviews 4 месяца назад
I stuck with it as I like the Ranger, in fact, I love it (other than the occasional mechanical or electrical fault), I came from AWD and have had had them as a second car since but I still don't understand why a modern engineered 4WD has this engineered in. My first 4WD was Shogun with manual 4WD selection, so I suppose I was spoilt. Thanks for the message though 👍🏻

An alternative that I've found is what I call Auto 4WD. I don't know if it has a better name but I had a 2007 Ford sport Trac (basically it's an SUV with bed sort of like Ford maverick) with it and I loved it, never got it stuck and drove through a lot of mud and snow with it. The way I understand it it basically is rear-wheel drive until it feels a slip then it will automatically engage the front so it avoids all the problems. It's not an AWD but it acted fast enough that I liked it. I think some of the higher end F-150s have it too but I've never had one. Just another alternative that might work in your case if you can find a vehicle you like that has it.

The old rangers (T6) models were part time 4x4 with on the fly-shift. 4H can't be used on sealed surfaces. However on the Next-Gen rangers you get 4A, which is an all wheel drive set-up. That you can use on all surfaces.
@cologne2792
@cologne2792 6 лет назад
I've no wish to be disrespectful but ALL part time mechanical 4wd systems operate in this manner and have done for decades. They run in rear wheel drive and 4wd is to be used only when conditions are so severe that rear wheel drive is insufficient. The older Rangers use a Limited Slip Diff on the rear wheels which is capable of dealing with 95% of all normal road use. The newer Rangers like this one have traction control which mimics the LSD and should be perfectly suitable on tarmac. None of the Rangers sold in the UK have ever had Diff Lock fitted as standard equipment except the option of the off road pack on the newer trucks, of which very few have this facility. Unlike a Range Rover / Land Rover or most permanent 4wd vehicles the Ranger has no centre diff so any attempt to make a sharp turn on tarmac will have this result as the wheels are all trying to turn at the same speed, as would any other vehicle with this 4wd system.. The Ranger 4wd is designed to be switched from 4wd to 2wd on the move once 4wd has been selected whilst stationary. In intermediate snow and ice it's very easy to switch between the two as the road conditions dictate and it does an excellent job of keeping you moving on the slippery stuff and driving safely on the dry stuff. My Ranger has a large warning sign on the drivers sun visor stating never to use 4wd on tarmac for precisely the reasons you've encountered, All the Ford literature points to it being rear wheel drive with shift on the fly ability. They could state in large letters DO NOT DRIVE IN TARMAC IN 4WD but anyone that knows anything about four wheel drive systems already knows this. There are many different systems and each has it's own set of operational parameters. Half the Audi Quattro range isn't permanent 4WD nor is the Honda CRV or Volvo who use the Haldex System. If Ford has to be brought to account for not better labeling their system then so does every other manufacturer of pick up trucks.
@CloughReviews
@CloughReviews 6 лет назад
Thanks Cologne, maybe I just have high expectations from previous experiences. And it is a bit worrying, when I take it to a big main dealer, that no one there can tell me that it is supposed to be like this. Maybe there wouldn't have been a video if Ford UK marketed the trucks properly and trained their staff adequately. We'll see this one out and then it's back to vehicles that come from companies with a 4x4 pedigree. Do you think that unless I'm doing sharp turns like in the video (on full lock), that the traction control you mention will be ok for the changeable conditions on tarmac during the winter?
@cologne2792
@cologne2792 6 лет назад
It should be more than capable. I have a much older Ranger on a 52 plate and so far that's got me everywhere I want to go on all road conditions, so far, in the past six years. I've driven on snow covered roads in 4H and it's coped admirably whilst dropping back into 2H for the clear tarmac sections and back to 4H for the snowy bits. The first Rangers from 99-12 have a standard fit rear LSD and that is excellent for getting you moving and keeping you moving under difficult conditions. The 2012 onward versions do without this and instead rely on electronic trickery. It's good but I'd prefer the mechanical alternative especially as the traction control is disabled in 4L 2012 onward have an option of a locking rear diff but again it wouldn't let you turn any sharp corners. It is only for when the mobility situation has become near terminal. I think what's happened with Ranger ownership is that due to their current image the buying demographic has changed and they're now bought by anyone, whereas previously they were only used as work trucks and were bought by the sort of people who were familiar with the more agricultural elements of the 4WD system. All the manufacturers make pretty much the same system and so for once it's not really Fords negligence but more an assumed understanding of what and why you're buying. Once understood the Ranger 4x4 system is actually very good and even with a lack of LSD it acquits itself well in nearly all road conditions. Personally I'd be much more concerned about the Ranger 2.2 and 3.2 propensity for premature and total oil pump failure. A large number of these have occurred already, destroying the engines and costing anything up to £5,000 to fix (new engine). Ford claim this isn't an issue, despite a similar problem afflicting the Transit and being sorted under warranty. Many owners have had the Ranger experience ruined and are understandably hostile toward Ford. Much has been written, many complaints made but a voice is needed with some clout to get Ford to do something and sort these pour souls out under warranty. The later Rangers also have a myriad of annoying tech issues that simply don't exists on the earlier models and the leather on the drivers seat splits - these issues are serious and really do need sorting. How about a long term review ?

And that is why I bought a triton it has 2H - (4H or awd) - 4Hlocked as the ranger has - 4L Locked . The centre diff lock is not to confused with front and rear lockers that your ranger may also have. If you got the manual you would have the option. at least you do in australia. Hey mate it’s not your rear lock dif it’s your front dif. I own a wildtrak in the land down under and 4x4 off road its awesome. What your over looking is when in 4x4 your not losing any traction on the surface your on at the time so you 50/50 power is binding up in you transmission and difs so keep it up and you’ll be blowing something. Your 4x4 system can be engaged at speeds of up to 110 km well into the range of slip and engage (have done this at 100kms when aqua planing) the high 4 system works well. But if your looking for a 4x4 with all wheel capacity then that’s what you buy not.a 4x4 the Everest is a perfect example of this a all wheel drive with 4x4 options. When on the road it runs a 35/65% power ratio so the fronts never get as much power as the rear until off road which then cuts down bind up in the transmission and difs to stop the full locker(on steering) bind. You lock dif will not engage until you tell it to(button on the dash board). Even when in low 4x4. This is to save you locker from blowing up as you know locker difs don’t like turning corners without lose of traction. At the end of the day it’s yet again car sales not explain questions probably or questions not being asked.

First one of this type of vehicle I've had after Range Rovers and Pajero's so was pretty much expecting them to all to be able to be in 4x4 on tarmac in 2018. Thanks though and lesson learned. Still, a good truck for the money :-)

I believe you are used to how a AWD or full time 4wd works and feels as apposed to how a 4wd. You would never want to drive on pavement with differentials locked. I noticed that you had a traction control button by your transmission shifter. This will use the wheel speed sensors to keep you in good traction. 4wd high or low is for off road. High is for dirt or mud, low is for crawling. 4wd high or low helps you maintain forward movement and lateral stability. So taking sharp turns is fine for full-time 4wd or AWD not 4wd. Hope this helps you understand the incorrect assumption you are making about 4wd.

Just brought an older ranger for work . And I'm just been learning all about transmission bind . Thought mine was broke ..but in all fairness it will only bind up if there's to much traction for it to slip . So if it's binding basically there's to much traction for it to be in 4h it is designed for proper off road muddy fields quarrys deep snow .. buy a VW amarock they have full time 4wd like Audi Quattros

Pinched this off a forum might help explain what's happening. When a 4WD is travelling in a straight line all four wheels rotate at the same speed, but during cornering each wheel travels at a different speed due to the radius of the turn. All vehicles have a differential on the front and rear axles to allow the wheels on the same axle to rotate at a different speed. Constant 4WD’s have a central differential fitted to allow for different speeds between front and back wheels, but most part-time four wheel drives do not. When a part-time 4WD (without a centre differential) is in 4WD an attempts to corner on bitumen, all wheels need to rotate at different speeds, but without a centre differential they cannot. This creates the phenomena called "axle windup" or "transmission windup". High strain is placed on the drive shafts and transmission, eventually causing one of two things to happen. Either one of the wheels slips or spins to overcome the stress or the drive-shaft/transmission breaks. This is why part time 4WD’s should never select 4WD on bitumen. Constant 4WD’s have a central differential within the transmission to overcome this problem.

Agree. I have the same truck and struggle turning into my driveway in ice/snow. I'd expect it to be tough manoeuvring with any steering lock in 4L but not in 4H....that should be for added grip on normal roads ands 4L if you are nearly stuck.

There’s 2 different types of “grip” - that’s why you’re confused. There’s road control grip and traction grip. It’s control grip that’s the most important in snow by a long long way. You only need 4WD traction grip if you’re stuck in deep snow. The manual explains it. Just get better tyres and leave in 2H.

I would go to the dealer and test drive another Ranger and see what happens. Whether your 4H locks the diff or not, 4H locked should work just fine on dry tarmac at low speeds for a short while without causing problems. If it is 4H unlocked, you should be able to drive in 4H all the time.

A good instructional video explaining the 4 x 4 drive line types can be found here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mhTVQh7bFtw.html . A proper understanding of drive line types may have influenced the posters choice of vehicle. I've been driving Land Rovers for over 35 years and other 4 x 4's for around 15 years and knowing what 4 x 4 driveline and when to select what options available for prevailing traction conditions is key to safe operation. IMHO the Ford Ranger drive line and how it should be used is very similar to Series Land Rovers and the on-road limitations they had regarding 'transmission" or "drive line" windup.

@CloughReviews

I get that. But my point is, what is the point of having a 4WD system that can only be used off road. Where I live, you can be in snow Ice or rain in minutes and you have a 4WD vehicle that you can only switch to once you are on a different surface as opposed to protecting you if you come upon it. It's a modern truck and should be able to be used on the road, especially as the grip is awful on the rear wheels if you don't have a full bed. Not good engeneering.....

You should have got a all wheel drive not a part time 4wd and only use 4wd on loose and slippery surfaces. Don't care what Ford says you will eventually destroy your drive line doing what your doing. Rear difflock is not needed unless the surface is undulating and the opposite wheel is coming off the ground. Nothing wrong with the vehicle any 4wd without a centre diff will do the same.

Ok I’m starting to feel sorry for you now, you really should have done a bit of research before you bought a Ranger and certainly before you posted this video and made yourself look so silly. There are two main types of 4wd systems. People used different terminology but I use 4x4 and 4WD. 4x4 is the system you want which is in what we call soft roaders. It is generally full time 4x4 and generally has a 40% front and 60% rear distribution and has a limited slip differential in the rear to allow the rear wheels to rotate at different speeds. This allows you to use the system on the road without transmission wind up. This is used in Audi’s etc. which gives better grip on the road. This system has limitations off road because the limited slip differential allows differing speed of rotation and looses traction off road. The 60/40 split also looses traction front to rear. Some have a locking rear and centre diffs but this still has limitations off road because it’s not as strong as a proper 4WD system. A true 4WD system is part time as in the Ranger. This systems is much stronger and has a true 50/50 front to rear distribution and the rear is locked when in 4WD and you need to drive in 2H on the road. The 4WD systems is for off road use only and can only be used on loose surfaces. This system is far superior off road and gives much better traction because there is no slip and no wheel is allowed to rotate freely. In a 4x4 systems, if a wheel losses traction, the power is transferred to a wheel that has traction through the traction control and in an off road situation, this actually looses overall power and you are more likely to get bogged. I have had 4x4 cars and they are no where near as good off road. I bought my Ranger because I do a lot of off-roading and understand exactly what the system does and it is absolutely awesome off road. That little hill on your driveway does not need 4WD and you will destroy your transmission if you do use it. It’s for off road use only. The Ranger can be switched to 4H at 100 KMH if traction is lost i.e. if you are on gravel or on snow and ice. You are actually putting your family at risk by using the system incorrectly due to your lack of knowledge of the system. Just look at the amount of negative comments from people that understand the system. You really do need to trade the Ranger in for a 4x4 car because you do not need a 4WD.

Here you go Giles: The Ford Ranger spanner warning light is related to a powertrain, electronic throttle control or four-wheel drive malfunction. This spanner / wrench warning light is generic and has no specific fault identification. The only two real issues I get are the speed sensor on the front wheels keeps having to be replaced. It knocks out the abs, parking sensors for some reason and the hill descent. And I think it the air flow sensor or something, that needs to keep being replaced as it stalls when you take your foot off the accelerator.

alright buddy, im gonna let you in on this, now 2h is 100% rear wheels turning yea, 4h is 50%/50% front and rear wheels turning at a constant speed - which is basically an off road setup. on road use is acceptable but not full turns and the shift on the fly is better, lets say youre driving at a speed of 110kmph yea, your shifters on 2h yea, suddenly you need it 4h yea, shift it! just shift it! at the same speed, its gonna connect like butter. and what youre looking for is a typical landcruiser setup which happens to be a 4h all time (displacement of 65%/35%) and of which are the 2006+ models and they too come in diesel with diff lock and crawl control and many more gadgets youd love to have, i truly suggest the 2016 look, lovely car, must try. book a test drive.

I do have the diff lock fitted on mine which is part of the off road package , where you get rear diff lock and engine and tank protection , this is an option when you spec the vehicle up from new, it is not on a ford wildtrack as standard, i think it was a £ 300 option, when i put the diff lock on and try it it does keep moving forward but very slowly and a bit juddery , i hope that you get yours sorted it doesn't bother me that much as i do not use it off road. Hope this helps
@mattmanix5104

It's not an issue with the front or rear diff locks. It's the fact that selectable 4WD vehicles do not have a centre diff meaning the front and rear wheel MUST travel at the same speed when 4WD is engaged. When turning, all wheels, front and rear, are trying to rotate at slightly different speeds. Doing the on tarmac even with front and rear diffs unlocked WILL damage your drive train. It's not a fault, its just something that happens with selectable 4WD and it's why the manual will state only engage 4WD on loose surfaces, damp tarmac doesn't count.

Clough Reviews you might want to try shifting it into 1st or low gear sometimes automatics start in 2nd gear and you might be able to just give it gas to avoid slipping i do now see you have just enough of a grade to be an issue. Pickups are so light in the back also adding weight helps.

I'm almost with you (almost). And yes, I didn't do my research, just assumed. Permanent 4WD is safer on the road than two and the back is light so you spin the wheels when pulling out quickly which you wouldn't with 4WD. Having come from a long line of AWD vehicles I was just expecting a higher degree of engineering. The frustration came more from the Ford 'tech' not knowing what the issue was as well which just got me even more frustrated, hence the Vid. I can't take it down now though, it's like a homage to Ford. No problems with the Drive Train and I like the truck.

Hi Edward, While I agree with you to a certain extent, these are not exactly cheap, basic trucks. This was £38k with all the extras and a lot of the competitors are now putting in the diff's and electronics that make driving on tarmac in 4WD achievable. If I'd never driven anything before this that was able to do it I wouldn't know any different but I've had the Range rover and the Pajero that were a lot older but still managed it easily. My point is that where I live, driving on the road you can be fine one minute and then come round a corner and it be ice or snow. you shouldn't be needing to watch out to switch all the time when you are in 2018 and paying top dollar so to speak. Watch this space, they will release one that has two diffs sooner or later just to keep in the market.

By buying a vehicle that lacked a feature you specifically wanted, you learned the hard way the difference between a full-time 4WD system (what you wanted, with features like an "AWD") and a part-time 4WD system (what that Ranger has). Part-time systems don't have a center differential just the transfer case (which when engaged to activate the front wheels acts like a locked centre diff but when disengaged never sends power to the front). A few 4x4 pickup trucks do come with full-time 4WD (aka "auto 4wd") which have a 3rd/centre differential alongside the transfer case. Like an AWD the centre diff has to be able to activate the secondary axle either using a LSD or some other active coupling system. And like an AWD this type of system is not intended for off-road conditions, mainly for on-road performance and safety under slippery conditions, especially when combined with vectoring and traction control. When you need the brute force of a locked centre diff (and possibly low range) for off-roading conditions you can do so by selecting 4H/4L instead of Auto which engages the transfer case (haven't even mentioned the rear locker yet which is a different usage entirely). So Auto 4WD is certainly a more robust 4wd system than most AWD cars can offer - however its an added feature that comes with a price and it's also an option that Ford doesn't offer on the Ranger. There are benefits of not having the third diff though: less moving parts, simpler to maintain & repair and better fuel economy.

Lon, a very concise and well explained response, and I pretty much agree with everything you say. The video was made after I'd taken it to ford thinking there was a problem. The tech with 15 years experience didn't know what it was only that it was the same when we took another ranger out. So coming away from there with no answer probably made matters worse. I'd had a Range Rover before this and as you say that is an AWD but before that I'd run an old Pajero for a few years with no issues and as you say, should not have just expected but should have researched. Thanks for the feedback anyway 👍

@@CloughReviews yeah, I'd seen this video of yours some time ago when doing some research on these Ford Rangers... And then again the other day when trying to understand the physical differences between part-time and full-time 4WD systems. Lots of harsh comments directed at you, but your video does demonstrate very well the limitations of part-time systems, and as you explained in the description you later came to understand why. With more vehicles being offered in AWD drivetrains these days it's surprising to find out that a modern expensive 4x4 vehicle touted for its 4WD capabilities is actually limited to 2WD modes on pavement, I'm in Canada and 5 months of the year it's dry cold pavement with lots of icy and snowy patches, so AWD is a desirable feature (including on a vehicle I'd sometimes take off road where I'd also want traditional 4x4 features). Anyway thanks for the video and comments, be well!

4H for general driving on loose surfaces, 4L in something like mud or pulling something out. It gives max torque and power at low speeds. Reduced gear ratios. You wouldn't want to use it on the road for example as you be going nowhere fast

@michaelridgway1628
@michaelridgway1628 4 года назад
What you are experiencing is a diff wind up. There is nothing wrong with the 4x4 system. All 4x4 with a central diff will do this. Only an all wheel drive system does not do this . It will also not be as good offroad.
@gabrielwalterfang2625
@gabrielwalterfang2625 2 года назад
Mate you have got it a little bit wrong there. You have practically demonstrated the difference between 4 wheel drive and all wheel drive. 4x4 is only for loose surfaces. If i was you i would not be so concerned with ripping at your tyres. If you keep using your ranger this way you will shred your gearbox more than anything, especially if you keep going to full lock. It will also dislocated your CV joints if you do it in reverse. Good luck
@CloughReviews
@CloughReviews 2 года назад
Yep, cheers Gabriel. I do only use it on loose/snowy/icy surfaces. I was just pissed that I couldn't use it on roads that were mixed, eg, come around a corner on black ice or into snow.
@bradleyryder9305
@bradleyryder9305 6 лет назад
mate you obviously dont understand how the traditional 4wd systems work. all the other types of 4wds you mentioned have centre differentials, but not the ranger. systems like in the ranger are designed for off road. Ford are correct in saying it is designed for off road use. if you are not happy with the Ranger, sell it and get a vehicle that has a centre differential that allows for full AWD usage on the road. Many 4wds are like this. they need an amount of slip to keep the diffs from binding up. you are comparing two different 4wd systems. not all 4wd systems are designed for on road use. Id suggest do a bit more research into the different types of 4wd and differential systems as there are a few different types out there. Some are not designed for on road use mate.

There is 4WD (or 4x4) and AWD. 4WD is better, and only to be used, OffRoad. If you use it not in the proper way expensive repairs will follow. AWD is better On Road but lagging Off Road.
@PetesShredder
@PetesShredder 6 лет назад
You gotta operate the 4wd system, its another part of the gearbox, you cant just bang it in 4wd and drive it about. you have to understand what goes on inside the transmission and use it correctly. With no front diff, it will wind up on tarmac, but you dont need 4wd on tarmac. I use mine literally when the back wheels slip a bit, and anly if the front wheels are on something loose (or atleast tracking straight. Then turn it off again immediately. Should only be in 4wd very very rarely, even if you drive it off road a lot. Ive used it in mine about six times, and ive had new shape rangers since they came out, and an old mazda rebadge before that.
@CloughReviews
@CloughReviews 6 лет назад
Agreed Pete, the only problem is when the road conditions are slippy. snowy, you go through patches and I don't want to be engaging and disengaging just on what I can see as I'm driving up to it.
@P1SteveP1
@P1SteveP1 6 лет назад
You need to understand also as the Ranger does have front diff. What it doesn't have is a CENTRE diff which the Permanent 4wd's have which allows 4wd use on non slippery surfaces. If this idiot Clough has owned RR's he would know that if you lock up the centre diff on a permanent 4wd vehicle it will also wind up it's transmission.

You seem to be blaming everything but your own ignorance. Yes, it has 4x4 decals on the side. But you only need to put it in 4x4 if 2wd isnt getting you anywhere. Don't blame ford because you cannot operate the vehicle. The whole purpose of it being selectable is to save fuel cause 99% of the time you should be in 2wd, thus only driving 2 wheels instead of 4. Yes, it's possible to engineer a permanent 4x4 system, but that is not what they attempted to do. You'll find the same setup in a hilux, a navara and a isuzu. Possibly amarok (not sure what their system is) but I can only say for certain that L200 is the only pickup I know of with the option of staying in 4x4 on dry tarmac. Quick question - why do you need 4x4 on the road anyway? Just sayin... I've had a ranger for nearly 5 years and it only sees 4H use off road or in bad enough snow that 2H isnt getting me anywhere. Road vehicles do not need permanent 4x4 - fact
