Ford Ranger Camping and Touring Build | How I'm going to Improve My Landscape Photography

If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you know that I’ve made a few changes to my Ford Range and in this video, I’m going to take you through a few of the modifications I’ve made, but first I want to talk about why. I love Landscape Photography not only because I enjoy the creative process of making landscape images, but I really enjoy exploring the outdoors and observing nature and the adventure of it all. That’s why I create the style of videos I do.
If you’ve followed the channel for a while, you’ll know that when I've gone camping with my family we’ve used our camper trailer, which I’ve got to say has been fantastic, but with the kids going up we’ve been using it less and less, so we decided at the beginning of the year to sell the camper trailer. So over the past 6 months I’ve been working out what I want for my new setup and rethinking how I want to travel around and camp, so I can increase my landscape photography opportunities as well as improve my experience.
Western Australia is full of unique landscapes, while lots of them are near populated areas, there is plenty I want to explore in more remote parts of the state. So I’m looking to do more remote touring and access locations that may require some 4wding. I often travel to locations on my own, so I’ve needed to consider safety features and products that were reliability.
Many of the places I go, don’t have convenient accommodation around and I actually prefer to camp out. While the camper-trailer was great, it wasn’t always easy to set up on my own, so with this next set up, I was looking for something simpler and that was quick and easy to set up camp. What I also want out of the rig is the ability to stay in remote locations for multiple days allowing me to really get to know an area and have the opportunity to capture it in different light. So I need the ability to charge all my camera and video gear over several days and carry all the food and water I need and be self-sufficient while completely off the grid.
For this build, I’ve used the following companies…
Norweld Australia: Aluminium Canopy - @norweldaustralia - www.norweld.com.au
Redarc: Battery Management System, Inverter and Solar Blanket - @redarc_electronics - www.redarc.com.au
Revolution Power Australia: Dual 2 x 100hm Lithium Batteries - @revolutionpowersolution
Dobinsons Suspension: Touring Suspension Kit - @dobinsonssprings
Malaga Suspensions: Installer of Suspension Kit
Roadvision: Beam Light, Light Bar and Worklight - @roadvisionaus
Go Camping & Overlanding: Camping and Overland Gear - @gocampingwa
Grab Me Gear: Storage for camping - @grabmegear
Klarmann: Installers of road and camping lights - @klarmannautomotivesolutions
QuickPitch: Installers of Norweld Canopy in WA - @quick_pitch_aus

Great setup, and I love that it's built on a Ranger! I have no problem with a tent on the ground, but I was thinking as I watched that a roof-top tent would complete a really great setup, then, you mentioned being on the lookout for one! No doubt, dragging a camper trailer is not the way. Very nice ... I think you're on to it!!!

Thanks for sharing your comment, I enjoy the experience of sleep in a swag, perhaps it's the simplicity, but I think your right a rooftop tent would compliment to set up and make it even easier when camping, we’ll see. I’ve been looking around, there are some great options on the market, cheers! 👍

Brilliant stuff Andrew. I love these Overland rigs, they're awesome. I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee that I'd outfitted (roughly) to be able to sleep in. That being said, I only travel as far as Wales in the UK, didn't really require an Overland motor. And when the turbo went pop and killed a bunch of electronics it was time for the scrap heap for the Jeep. I do follower Ronny Dahl, another RU-vidr who specialises in Overlanding with a 79 series Land Cruiser. I would imagine that what he and his pals don't know isn't worth knowing. I have recently been looking at chopping in my Audi against an older Ford Ranger just for the utility and versatility, I do miss having a 4x4! Great stuff Andrew, keep up the great work pal.
@Andrew_marr
@Andrew_marr 4 года назад
Cheers Gareth, it amazing what some people put together for rigs. There are so many options out there and the design and technology is always improving. I don't think it matters where you are, Overlanding is a lifestyle and an approach, different situations, different conditions. As with photography, I’m always learning about camping setup and touring rigs, that's half the fun. I don't know whether I could live without a 4x4, cheers mate! 👍

Great video Andrew, at last a landscape photographer that sees the need for a decent 4x4 setup rather than a camper van. I drive a Ford F150 and although the build isn't aimed purely at landscape photography its a compromise with rally support duties as well. What a fantastic ad for Engle, think they are indestructible. I am seriously considering downsizing to a Ranger when i change the vehicle next.
@Andrew_marr
@Andrew_marr 4 года назад
Haha, it’s funny you mention that, I’ve had many if people recommend those camper vans but there are plenty of places in Australia they just aren't practical. The F150 is an awesome truck, I think utes in general be set up for different purposes more easily. It's amazing how tough these Engles are, this one spend it’s first ten years in a boat. As you say, great ad for their product. Thanks for watching and sharing your comments! 👍

Great video & amazing set-up Andrew. Lots of thought gone into it, especially the power options and UHF for remote work. I have an X-Trail & swag that I use which I've kitted out so I can do some semi-remote photography, but its the cheaper option & not for such remote areas, at least not on my own. Be interesting to see what locations you get out to. 👍👏

Andrew, check out the Bundatop rooftop tent. It is electric so you don’t have to scramble all over the roof to unpack and erect it. They are made in South Africa, but are now readily available here. I have one of their Bundawn 360 degree awnings. A 270 degree one would really set you up well. Also Alucab, again South African, make a fabulous awning too. They use “proper” canvas, rather than the Chinese ripstop cotton that seems to be favoured by some other manufacturers.
@Andrew_marr
@Andrew_marr 4 года назад
Thanks Keith for your comment, that's very helpful. I'm definitely looking for real canvas over the ripstop cotton. Not only for quality but to block out more light and heat. Interesting to hear your thoughts on the awnings. I'll check out the brand's you mentioned, cheers!👍

That is a perfect, well constructed and thought out canopy! I loved the walk through. I am a long-time, lurking subscriber to your videos, but seldom take the time to comment. After watching this video on the big screen with a sleeping daughter upstairs, I felt a constructive criticism was in order. The volume difference between your commentary portions and the segments with background music is too extreme. I had to bump the volume up to hear your voice, but when the music kicked in, it was much louder and I had to scramble for the volume button on the remote. Thanks for your honest and well presented vlogs. I love the content and the landscape photography.

Nice setup Andrew, that chain for the spare swinging around is a little scary though... could get caught up on something? I had a rooftop tent on my vehicle when i went traveling, which was fine for me when solo. But when the with traveled with me and i wanted to get up early and drive to get to a early morning shoot, I had to wake her up early too... lets just you shouldn't wake the sleeping bear lol. So i went back to setting up a base camp so she could sleep in, and i could do my thing. "Happy wife, Happy life..".
@Andrew_marr
@Andrew_marr 4 года назад
Hey Wesley, hope you are well mate. I’ll have to do something about the chain. You make a good point, I don't think my wife will take kindly to be woken up early for a sunrise shoot. So this set up is more for solo adventures or the odd times we go camping together, I think a base camp would be more suitable!
