Ford Ranger FX4 Max review 2021: Like a Raptor, but it can tow & lug a load

Love the Ford Ranger Raptor, but need to tow up to 3500kg and load just under 1000kg of payload? Maybe the 2021 Ford Ranger FX4 Max is for you! It has some of the suspension components from the Ranger Raptor, plus a meaty set of all-terrain tyres. Paul Maric tests it out to see if it's any good!

Bought one of these with the sticker package as a post divorce and mid life crisis gift to myself, and honestly could not be happier with it, it's a lot more fun to drive and you feel much more satisfied sitting in it especially coming from a Honda Odyssey. The road noise doesn't bother me at all and there's no one else in the car to complain. 5/5 stars!

This would be an awesome touring ute for towing a trailer or caravan and then can still go 4x4ing for some fun! You would never tow with a Raptor! With a XLT or Wildtrack while very nice with tech pack and all, you still need to upgrade suspension and tyres where FX4 is good to go! Plus having all those switches for extras is mint! No to the sticker pack! Just remember mate its a UTE targeted for mainly blokes, tradies and 4x4 touring. A shoulder check in a ute with good visability wont kill you and if the cup holder isn't made for your baby latte then be a big boy and order a large!

Listen Ive just bought one and its on its way. Reasons/thoughts; * I'm a professional who will use it as a taxi during the week. I need new car (driving 1996 bomb) but I want to get out 4WD/Hunting/Camping with the family on the weekends. This is smaller/cheaper/more usable around town than a y62 or LC200 which I see as the next step up. I am not interested in the older LCs. *Raptor towing and carrying concerns me. - I have a 250kg downball camper trailer + 200kg family + 100kg roof rack = Only just over 100 kg of stuff I can carry camping. Thats not enough for anyone right? Everyone adds a roo bar and rock sliders, canopy etc which would easily blow out a raptors payload. And its soo wide. that worried me. *Why not a wildtrax X? (was my first car to look at) Well the problem with them #1 is 18inch rims and tyres. Both need replacing for offroad stuff really. Im not talking rock crawling either. And many will add a lift straight away. * FX4MAX came with the rims and tyres done, mild lift (all covered by warranty) which isnt cheap. The 4wd mods are sorta done and its ready to go straigth away imo. Well for my modest needs. I had heard it drives better than a normal ranger (from a salesman who drove it a bit). To hear you say its drive isn't nice and the road noise sucks to hear, but I am still happy with my purchase and reasoning.

How did you guys justify the FX4MAX over the wildtrak, that's what I'm struggling with today. I'm ready to buy one right now, I just can't decide between FX4MAX or Wildtrack. I'll need new tyres on the Wildtrak, granted, but it comes with roller shutter and electric locking tray, and a bit of a fancier interior. I dig the switch panel, but is it worth swapping for the included tech package, illumination, LEDs and locking tub on the wildtrak? Genuine question, not making trouble, I'm legitimately trying to decide which one to go put a deposit on and it's hurting my head...
@beauthompson3045
@beauthompson3045 3 года назад
@@jasonbennettdesign electric seats, seat warmers etc are not things I care much about. I use mine for touring, camping & 4wding so have put a canopy on so the roller shutter also was not something I wanted. This model has what I need, as in the upgrades I would have done to anything else I bought, e.g suspension, tires and has the ability to run the accessories I will run like winch, lights, compressor etc with the upgraded alternator. Plus maintains the payload and towing capabilities. Having now received mine I am even happier and love the set up, the 10 speed transmission gets a little lost in the lower gears but isn't a big deal in my opinion. I disagree with suspension comments in the review, but I also run rear drawers and canopy which I feel helps contribute to in my belief the nice ride.

Bad choice in my opinion. The 2022 round the corner is a V6 and looks even better.

Test drove this just recently and was very impressed. Drove it back to back with the Wildtrak and preferred the FX4, particularly the suspension and handling. Raptor is significantly more expensive so this is a good compromise. The 2 litre also impressed. Would definitely purchase this vehicle but am holding out for the new model which will hopefully be out by end of the year or early next (hopefully with a v6). I also recently tested Amarok 580, Hilux Rugged X and D-Max X-Terrain. Ranger was my favourite. Never been in one before. Can see why they sell so many. Kudos to Ford.

I bought my 2020 XLT FX4 last year, used, for my lifestyle. Single dad who works hard and plays hard. It’s fancy enough that it looks great under city lights but it also looks great dirty. I use the bed for lots of light use, like another hand around the yard, and for my bike for after work through the week. On the weekends the kids and I are able to go anywhere and do anything thanks to the off road package. I researched other vehicles, and got this one because it suits every single one of my needs (and wants).

Just bought one like you said its the practically having a tray at the back. For me its a multi purpose specifically those long road trip with my family. We take so much stuff when we go for holidays, and its jam pack our SUV. And now makes thing so much more better by having a ute.
@graemehills5759
@graemehills5759 3 года назад
The FX4 MAX suspension (2 inch) is not the same as the Raptor (2.5 inch), which is heavier and tuned more for on road, according to Fox. The FX4 MAX is targeted more for off road and so is going to be a little rougher. If you are planning to use your ute off road towing or with a canopy full of gear, and want to travel in some comfort, the FX4 MAX is a good option. BTW, a cordless charge mat is available as an optional accessory, I thought I had better point that out as you told people that it doesn't have one. Cons: Manual seat adjustment, no vents in the back seat, no reach adjustment on the steering wheel, and a small paper cup of coffee doesn't fit nicely in the cup holder. I think I could live with that - given it comes with 31.6 in off road tyres, great suspension, 157kw, & 500nm. Decent off road credentials. Don't get hung up about the decal package - it's a $700 package that you don't have to get.

Bought a dual cab because they are so practical. Dog, bike and gear in the back for the weekend and you can pressure wash it out. Try pressure washing an Everest out... It's also less of a compromise, when you compare to an SUV, in regards to comfort.

I think the amarok is better, the 4cly that ford and other manufacturers release just don't do it for me. They are highly strung and under powered for what they are powering. I also hate cars/utes that don't have reach adjust on the steering, it makes it hard to get comfy.

As a teacher, I have been really looking forward to buying one for the ease and use of moving furniture and bigger items to be delivered to my classroom and also obviously it will be very handy for personal use. Having the independence of being able to move my own furniture is something that really appeals to me. Eventually one day, it seems that it will be a good family car as well.

I’m currently driving the 2020 XLT. Prior to that I had the 2017 XLT. Both have been great vehicles for me. I tow for work (between 1500kg-2500kg depending on the day) and camp on weekends. I also have an 80 series that’s mostly for fun (both the wife and daughter aren’t fans of the 80 for a number of reasons) and it doubles as a back up work vehicle when needed. I saw the FX4 MAX and thought it might hit the mark for work, play and family. I didn’t realise it only came in the bi-turbo 4 cylinder, so I’ll rule it out on that alone (4 cylinders working harder and revving higher kind of negates the fuel savings of a smaller engine and not sure yet what that means for lifespan of the engine), but your comments on the compromised ride are also good to know. I’m a fan of the mid-sized 4WD for the versatility of work/play/family, but they’re not my ‘forever car’, that would be a 79 series Landcruiser. So while there remains a price difference of $30k or so between a cruiser and a ranger (etc.), I’ll be staying with the mid size.
@CarExpertAus

It’s a treat when I drive the family sedan, otherwise I’m so used to the ride and different driving style it feels normal. Rides better than my XB GS that I had moons ago anyway, and cheaper too. Would suit me perfect. I’m a farmer and regularly tow and carry heavy loads, and go off road most days as well. Currently driving an XLT and have got bigger tyres on it but standard otherwise as it is a company vehicle so we don’t want to go modifying them and compromising warranties and legalities. Here in New Zealand we are allowed to do a 5% increase in tyre size legally so in theory the FX4 Max can run a 33” tyre compared to 32” on an XLT or Wildtrak. A bit more off road performance while still maintaining the carrying and towing capacity I need would be great, and the 2L is a step up from my current 3.2L as well.

For the raptor lovers, you can't pull a standard camper trailer once you add 5 people, camping gear and water in your trailer (2,500kg is a tough ask - You can't extend yourself if you need to with a boat carrier etc.. This is why the car exists Paul. The wildtrak does handle the requirement but ideally most people would fit bigger tyres and a lift kit so you're right back to the FX4 MAX. For campers pulling trailers, this is your vehicle.

Farmer. Tow 3.5 tons regularly as well as carrying bales and 600kg tote bags plus one ton pallets of 25kg bags. Only very occasionally carry passengers in the rear seats but it is usually full of expensive tools, jump start cables, a small welder and so on, some of which needs removing when a passenger sits in there. The cubby holes are filled with animal medicines and the glovebox with herd management sheets from a computer at the office. This spec seems ideal for my use. I've tried the current Ranger in lesser trim and more road tyres and they are not noisy. I think maybe I'd stick with the Limited or Wildtrak models but certainly with the twin turbo diesel and ten speed box.

Be interested to have your thoughts on the suspension with some sort of load in tray and/or towing. Also how does it compare to its competitors you mentioned not just the raptor.

BF Goorich KO2 many have described as dangerous on road especially in wet. So unless you take care and drive 80% off road and 20% on road might stick to AT3W Wildpeak (Falken) which are brilliant on road and off.

Not after the bi turbo at all. But want the ranger 3.2 5 cyl for towing a van. Or next years v6. I think the little bi turbo would be a time bomb towing a large van off road. But then again... lease company's problem. Fuel tank size will be an issue... But after market tank Available. I'm Use to a 150 litre Prados range. Great videos, like your delivery. Easy to listen to. Most Aussie car videos start with some galah going, "owsitgarnmate". Your show is refreshing!

Awesome review! I am confused with the Ranger it's variants. I had thought the FX4 was an XL or XLS with the Raptor suspension, but looks like I was wrong. Not sure who would buy this when the XLT seems to be a better buy. Maybe people who want the extra clearance and better offroad suspension. Seriously looking at getting a Ranger later this year, glad I can cross the FX4 option off and consider the XLT. But I'm waiting for those Triton reviews!

Great review again. i am pleased i did not wait for this and got a wildtrak after your opinions. Only gripe i have with the review is that you compared it mostly with Raptor and we all know how good that is. It would have been nice to compare it with other brands that do an off road version to see how it compares to direct rivals.

I don't know Colin, I have the PX3 Wildtrak and I'm selling it for one of these. The wildtrak's features don't justify themselves, who auto parks a ute seriously! The standard lift kit and big tyres, grill, this think looks heaps better! The Raptor can't tow anything bigger then a carrot so that's off the cards also! MAX for me this time round!

I bought my Triton as it was the cheapest with the most tech but the reason I looked for a dual cab was- occasional haulage for the farm as well as daily driver. In hind thought I would have bought a medium all wheel drive ( as roads here get very slippery and my drive way needs a 4wd to get in and out in the wet) and a second hand ute for farm work.

I by utes because of the room to put things in. I used to go to Busselton with the family and I used to take my families gear and the sister inlaws gear in the Ford Courier dual cab with a canopy. When I changed to a GQ Patrol Wagon, I could'nt take all the gear I used to and definatley could'nt take any of the sister inlaws gear. I thought the GQ would have just as much room but NOooo. I like utes because of the ability to carry larger Items such as furniture or timber. I'm not a tradie and don't use it for work, I just find it more useful and practical for weekend activities be it carring picnic gear, trip to garden centre, trip to Ikea or going to the tip. I also don't have to worry about being clobber by gear if I stop suddenly. Another benifit of a ute is if you have dirty gear such as snatch strap or garden products you aren't worried about getting the interior of the car dirty. Hope that helps Paul.

Many people are confusing ground clearance and ride height ... I think it's only Mitsubishi which gives the actual ground clearance whereas the rest gives ride height for ground clearance and that can cause confusion for those that don't understand it and are new to the 4×4 experience things

Thanks for the video. Don't like the decals. We do the log climb and rock downhill in 4L whereas you were in 4H so suggest it wouldn't have runaway like it did. On road, when you kicked it down, sounds like a CVT...anemic engine noise :) . Still think the lower dash were the stero and climate controls are situated, the black square panel looks like its lifted from the AU Falcon. Would like a Ranger but need the price to settle down more.

The stickers are definitely crap, the old FX4 ones are better. Interesting review though. The suspension is an upgrade from a normal coil / leaf Ranger and it has the same brand of shocks, not the same shocks as the Raptor so I don’t understand the constant comparison. Comparison to a Wikdtrack or XLT would make sense. I’m looking forward to driving one to see for myself but the comments I’ve read from people who have got them already all say it’s better than a normal Ranger. Also, they’re selling before they’re built and the delivery wait is now apparently until June so these people it was built for that don’t exist seem to be buying lots of them

I didn't mind the red stickers right up until you said that they cost seven hundred dollars! On a car that already costs sixty five grand a few stickers that will probably fade and crack in the next few years (like a lot of the D4-D stickers that you see on Prados) should be a 'no cost' option; for an additional seven hundred dollars Ford should be able to paint the extra colours on and do it properly. Keep in mind that you've already paid an extra six hundred dollars for coloured paint if you've chosen anything other than white.

Yes Paul - those vinyl stickers reminds me of walking into a Hungarian gift shop ewe!, but no disrespect of your Balkan roots - this model was obviously conceived during a morning tea coffee break - they’ve tried to grab a segment of drivers that don’t exist - I do like the rear tray cup holders 👍🏻 but under the bonnet I would not want to the service/repair costs of not one but two turbos - no surprise on fuel as a small four cylinder pulling around a large ute is going to work harder than a 3 litre four cylinder - I’m a Hilux driver but if I was to spend such a large amount of currency it would have to be the larger-engined Raptor - dangerous idea to have +- button to distract you from the road ahead and no blind spot monitoring? - cheap and nasty for the price - good to see the river isn’t flooded now - John in SA

My Ranger Raptor weighs 2.510kgs (almost the same as the new gen full size F-150, all aluminum) and this must be something like widtrak, 2.300kgs, and so Raptor is slower than these in 0-100. But what a comfort in return you get from the Raptor. Until the new Ranger comes out, I stick with my Raptor.
