Thanks for your video. It helped me replace my APIM in my 2018 F350 today. As a woman who takes her truck to the dealership for everything …I changed this on my own with your video & I found it very helpful & made it a very smooth process.

Ford has a TSB out about this. It turns out that almost always, the APIM itself is not the problem. Ford has sent what they call the "master USB" sticks to their dealers, which updates the APIM and solves these issues. Ford authorizes dealers to charge for 0.2 hours of labor to perform this APIM update. This is different than the SYNC update owners can do themselves. Thanks for the Intel on how to replace the APIM, if actually needed. Nice job!

Dang! I wish this was the case with my truck. My ford dealership was trying to charge me $1600. They told me my APIM was on the fritz. Thanks for the info. If mine goes down again I’ll have them check this first.

@WonderfullyWander Ford was not aware of this at first, but Ford started testing warrantied APIMs and discovered they were almost all perfectly good, just a software or firmware issue. The dealerships are now required to perform the master USB update before claiming the APIM itself is bad, for warranty work. If you are not under warranty I'm sure many dealerships will just continue charging absurd money to swap out your APIM.

I’ve got a 2018 F3 50 doing the exact same thing after a minor rear end collision had to remove the bed To do the repair at the body shop once everything was put back together I had electrical problems and everything else is now repaired but the APIM ??? Ford says they have no idea when I could get one it could be up to six months????? I’m totally screwed without my truck!! I would like to send you my van to see what you can do for me???

@@kevinanderson5468 sorry bud I am not a mechanic. the good news is if it's a ford Sync 3 apim this video will help you through the process. go to the website in the link and they guy at FLVPMODS will get you want you need. you don't need a dealership this is a fairly simple fix.

Just ordered a new APIM module for my 2018 Raptor. My dealership wanted $1700 to replace and I found one for $550. Thanks for the install video!

I’m having the same issue bought my truck 2 years ago certified pre owned the APIM had to have been bad when I bought bc the auto updates never worked

Hi Jared, is your replacement APIM still working like the day you installed it? Just seems like a re-programmed used APIM could potentially run into the same issues down the road, but maybe the programming is what matters? My 2018 probably started acting up after it was only like 2 years old, now it works sometimes, sometimes doesn't, often the NAV will work when I start out (I never actually use it, just watch the map) but by the time I reach my destination the NAV says I am still in the town where I started. Sometimes the NAV works but the 'arrow' indicating my position is off, where I will be driving through bodies of water, nowhere near a road etc. I rarely get a black screen. I'm going to try the Power + FFWD reset first, if that doesn't help I'll try the removal of NEG batt cable > wait 2 minutes > reconnect method I saw elsewhere. If that all fails I'll try the APIM replacement. Thanks for the video! -Jeff

Jeff, thanks for your comment. It definitely sounds like you have a bad APIM. I have had the (new to me) APIM for about 6 months now and it is still working flawlessly! I think FLVPMODS.COM does a very good job testing the modules to ensure they are working properly. Of course there will always be the possibility of failure because we are basically dealing with computer parts. For what this guy charges vs what a dealership charges I think it a worthwhile risk. He does offer a warranty on his products so if there is an issue it will likely reveal its quickly.

@@Wonderfullywander thanks Jared, I see you also have the twin panel moonroof, just replaced the plastic tracks on mine a couple weeks ago, another known issue with these trucks. Too bad but I still love my truck!

Just about all APIM's will eventually fail. The very fine pitch solder joints for the large integrated circuits on the APIM printed circuit board get stressed by repeated temperature extremes seen inside the dashboard. Eventually a solder joint fractures and becomes an intermittent connection. Using a windshield shade on your dash may help extend the time before failure by slightly reducing the temperature stress on APIM components. Buying a recycled APIM is a crap shoot. The person may program in the VIN based feature parameters and check out the APIM operation but in the small amount of test time, usually at room temperature, it may not show up any intermittent operation. They usually have no knowledge of the history of the given used APIM module.

I’m not sure if the non nav units have the apim. If they do the installation is the same.

No the APIM (Accessory protocol interface module) and the FCIM (Front Controls Interface Module) are two different modules with two different functions. APIM controls the SYNC infotainment system. FCIM is responsible for the front controls, typically including climate control functions.

@@Rtwolfe06 the best bet is to call your local ford dealership. Ask for the parts department. Give them your VIN number and ask them to look up the part number for the FCIM for your truck. Then you can go to Amazon or Ebay and search for the specific part number. You can usually buy FoMoCo parts online that are OEM
