www.PingSkills.com - Table Tennis Secrets Revealed
In this video we teach you how to play the forehand topspin against a backspin ball. This stroke is very similar to the forehand topspin against block. The main differences are that you start a little bit lower, finish a little bit higher, and the stroke itself is more vertical to lift the backspin. You still need a good brushing contact to generate the topspin. If you have any questions about this stroke then please visit our website and use the ask the coach section.
Thanks for watching! We love making table tennis videos and hope they'll help you understand the game of table tennis. Make sure you subscribe to keep up with our latest videos. You can also follow us through:

What about the wrist? Do you haver to bend or break the wrist as soon as you contact the ball when going upwards? Can you generate enough power when it is heavy spin? For instance my opponent does a very heavy backspin serve at the end of the table. I noticed the arm is bend at the begining why is that? thanks a bunch ! I literally limproved 50% more beacuse of your videos!

This shot has been one of my problems recently. I find I often play against choppers, and it's hard for me to convert the rally into an offensive one, and I usually lose the chopping game. It's always been hard for me to counter their backspin and create my own topspin. Now I understand that my mistake is I'm trying to do a FH loop or FH topspin, which requires the bat to be a lot more closed than this shot requires. I'll try it tonight with my practice partner, I hope I can surprise him with some awesome shots! :) Thanks a lot, PingSkills!

Thanks so much for these videos! A group of friends and I started an informal table tennis club a couple months back. 3 tables in a studio space and about 12 semi-regulars. We were all typical, average, dozen or so games a year players, (with drunken marathons back in college) but have now been playing a couple nights a week for a few hours each night. Lately, we have been watching your videos on spin techniques, serves, etc. I have such a hard time returning backspin balls. I finally stopped hitting most of them into the net, but now I am going way too high with them and then I am immediately forced to block the oncoming attack. I've gotten fairly decent at blocking because of this, hahaha. Anyway, I guess I will work on returning the backspin low and short before trying to add any attacking.... Anywho, forgive my rambling personal story, I just wanted to say I really appreciate these videos! They have really helped me up my game!

Alois/Jeff: This is an excellent tutorial. The forehand topspin (against any stroke) is perhaps the weakest part of my game. My forehand counter-hit and block are effective; however, neither stroke allows me to take the offensive. Also, any "loop" I successfully hit is either too slow or too high which allows my opponent to seize the advantage. I look forward to practicing what you've suggested...

If you keep hitting the ball into the net then you need to swing higher to get the ball higher. When doing this then try to brush the ball to generate topspin so it will dip down onto the table. Good luck!

Hi TheToXaS112, That could be a good video suggestion. This can happen especially after you've been playing for a while. It's important to remember that progress is not always linear. Sometimes we are going to feel like we are having a slump in form. It's often good to simply keep on practicing as you always would. Things will turn around.

I have zero confidence in this shot. I practice the starting and finishing positions, body rotations and footwork each time at the club and it feels fine, but in practice drills I don't connect at all on probably two thirds of the balls. Earlier tonight at the club I wondered if my playing height is still too high off the table. I'm fairly tall at 6'5 (195cm - credit to Google translate) but I do squat down during my swings, to the point where any more feels like I will be immobile. Anyways, thankyou Alois and Jeff for the awesome tutorials!
@pingskills
@pingskills 9 лет назад
Mike D If you are not connecting at all then try focusing more on watching the ball as closely as possible. I know this sounds simple but sometimes when concentrating on everything else we don't do this as well as we should and can end up missing the ball totally. If you are tall you do need to get down quite low which is sounds like you are doing. Try with them maybe 1 and a half two times the width of your shoulders. Also are you comfortable doing the forehand topspin against block? If not practice that a bit more first. Let us know how you get on with some more practice.
@miked6263
@miked6263 9 лет назад
PingSkills Greetings, Alois and Jeff! I believe what was happening was that I was attempting the shot on balls that were hit to me too short, sometimes nearly bouncing twice on the table. I had a partner hit some deeper backspin shots to me and started connecting much more reliably. This shot is scandalous fun to use in games! It feels especially nice when there is almost no noise made when my paddle connects with the ball, it is like a stealth hit. Glorious! Thankyou Alois and Jeff for the excellent videos and communications. Take care.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean. You do have to hit the ball after it bounces on your side of the table.
@BushanBengaluru
@BushanBengaluru 5 лет назад
PingSkills after it bounces, it has to complete the bounce and when ball is going down, then only we should hit the ball to convert the backspin to top, if not ball would fly off the table.
@pingskills
@pingskills 5 лет назад
@@BushanBengaluru Ah I see. A good place to hit such a shot is at the top of the bounce. You can also wait till the ball is dropping if that feels more comfortable for you but the top of the bounce gives you the best angle to hit the ball onto the table.

Hi guys If I compare Jeff's stroke with that of some Chinese pro teaching videos, what I observe is that the pro will let his forearm drop so that it almost hangs vertically and then they will rotate about the elbow while performing the weight transfer. Jeff's elbow remains fairly hooked and the rotation mostly comes from the upper body and shoulder. Is this just a difference in style or an optical illusion or is either technique more effective than the other? Thanks
@pingskills
@pingskills 9 лет назад
Good observation *****. It is a difference in style which some people refer to as the Asian vs European style. If you notice players like Gatien in particular and Timo Boll for example, they tend to have shorter strokes compared to the Chinese like Wang Liqin and Ma Long. I find it easier to control the ball with my elbow bent whereas Alois prefers to have his arm extended more at the start. Try out both ways and see which you like best. I think when Alois teaches he leans towards having the arm more extended at the start. Cheers, Jeff.

Is it ok to keep your wrist bend while forehand topsin or we should keep it flat i keep my wrist bend too much while forehand topspin
@pingskills
@pingskills 9 лет назад
Hi Anirudh Verma, For the basic stroke you want to keep your wrist fairly straight and relaxed. You will naturally use a little bit of wrist but not as much as on the backhand. If you want to generate sidespin (a more risky stroke) you can use your wrist to change the angle so you get the sidespin. Take a look at our video on the forehand sidespin topspin to see what I mean.

@pingskills

@Romping227
@Romping227 5 лет назад
It must be mentioned that every single ball is different in terms of speed and spin, so one sole movement like this would be rather hard to apply in a actual game. Also, you can tell that it is weak backspin, in reality no one professional would offer you such a move. They would either apply heavy backspin or aim it somewhere else. This just demonstrates the easiest version of forehand topspin against backspin. Easy placement. Easy spin. Try using this move on a heavy backspin which isn't in a comfortable position.
@purpose6113
@purpose6113 5 лет назад
Wow, you really have a big need for attention, smartass They are explaining thebasic principles/ mechanics/ theory of this stroke.
@Romping227
@Romping227 5 лет назад
@@purpose6113 Basic principles includes adjusting your stroke which any beginner or professional attempts to do, this is just a fact of pretty much any sport. That move in the video certainly isnt wrong per se for that specific type of back spin and placement but they could always increase the realness of the video by mentioning things like, "make the paddle angle more vertical if encountering heavier topspin or if you dont have enough strength or control." or "don't hit the ball directly but at an angle, this adds sidespin, to have better accuracy or control"
@Romping227
@Romping227 4 года назад

I'm watching it again to refine me stroke mechanism just wanted to know what does standing fairly square means here at 3:25 Sometimes it gets really hard to return with forehand topspin because I'm out of position and I don't get time to duck down n with subsequent shots the backspin keeps increasing on the ball and I just get tired keeping up with backspin coz I see the heavy backspin coming n I know I won't be able to return

Learning to play against backspin does take a while. It does sound like you are on the right track. As for standing square on it just means don't be too side on to the table. I'm glad our tutorials are helping. Be sure to check out the PingSkills.com website too as the videos are arranged in a logical order. Good luck with your table tennis.

+Enes Pasha I'm glad the video we suggested works. We do have videos on the backhand topspin and advanced backhand topspin. You can find them on the PingSkills website under Lessons -> Strokes & Techniques. I'm not really sure what you mean about the leg when serving. I don't think there is a real advantage in moving your legs a lot when serving.

I guess he means that is some of the player strike the ground hard when serving

can i use this if they serve short?
@pingskills

No, in that case you can push the ball back or if you want to be more attacking try the flick. We have tutorials on both these shots on the PingSkills website.

penhold grip also same?
@pingskills

Yes, for the forehand topspin, most of the points in this video are true for the penhold grip too.

It's a bit different for the backhand topspin with the penhold. Google "pingskills penhold techniques" to see it in action.

my top spin's ball doesn't spin sideways left or right , it just goes on spin straightway after hitting the opponents table it goes on straight rather than deviating right or left
@pingskills
@pingskills 8 лет назад
+Rehan Riaz That's fine. It just means you are hitting pure topspin.

how do i generate swing in my top spin?
@pingskills
@pingskills 8 лет назад
+Rehan Riaz If you want some sidespin then you need to alter the angle of your wrist so you hit the ball partly on the side. We have a lesson on the forehand sidespin topspin. Look for it on the PingSkills website under Lessons -> Strokes & Techniques.

Would it be easier to execute this stroke and get it over the net with a high throw angle rubber? I most often end up smacking the ball into the net! Thanks
@pingskills
@pingskills 8 лет назад
+HÄNDÄ Some people suggest that a high throw angle may help. I believe though that it's more about the technique. It is hard to lift the backspin. Try brushing the ball more whilst having your bat come upwards a little faster. Let me know if that helps.

Nice Guide Sir, I got have problem when I Play topspin(more often in backhand) (If I use wrist to brush the ball,my shot goes wrong,but If don't use of wrist the to brush the ball shot goes right but in this ball don't get brushing properly). So please sir tell me can I use the wrist to brush the ball?
@pingskills
@pingskills 9 лет назад
+FreeIndia FreeIndia On the backhand side you certainly can use your wrist. On the forehand side it isn't used as much. I find that if you keep your wrist relaxed it will naturally move a little bit which is effective for the forehand.
