This song was played a lot in 1986, during my divorce. My husband had gone to work one day and never came back. There was another woman involved, that he allowed into our lives, pulling him into her world, and even though we had only been married four years, it crushed me. At 24 years old, I was divorced, and so wounded because on top of that my mother had disowned me. It was a double rejection, so I was really searching for what "real" love is. The words in this song had meaning for me then. Well, God did a new thing. He brought someone new - and we've been married 36 years now. I believe God answered that question, "I want to know what real love is."
This song was our wedding song in 1986. My husband passed away unexpectedly from pancreatic cancer in 2017. I miss him every day. I love this song but makes me cry.
When I first heard this song, I just thought it was just another commercial love song, but many years later, I see the spirituality of this song especially in these troubling times. There is so much hate and greed in the world that we have forgotten what the true spirit of love is all about. The words are perfectly written in this song to long for something so incredibly wonderful, beautiful as the meaning of love, and to bring it back into our lives! How dark do things have to get before we realize that love is always with us.
I agree except for the "underrated" part. This song topped the charts in the US (both Hot 100 and Rock Tracks), UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, etc. while hitting No. 3 in Germany (their only top 10 hit there), No. 4 in France (their only top 20 hit there) and No. 6 in both the Netherlands and Belgium.
I think out of all the secular music out there, this song is the most touching song...praise our Heavenly Father and HIS Only Begotten Son! 🙌👑👑🙌 It's portraying our journey- in moving back to our first Love, which is Messiah. He bore much for us as wretched sinners. A sister in fellowship mentioned this song, on our Sabbath fellowship, and it's so true, that this is a secular song so set apart from the rest of the mainstream. Having gone through much years of silly mistakes (sins) and errors myself and much tragedy, then the madness of the past few years, having taken shape and place, this Beautiful song with moving lyrics, helps you realise for sure, the passion of our Messiah and what matters most now. What is most important on our Journey/walk with HIM , is we then learm how to Emit HIS Love and Light, through study of the "Living word" not just reading and letting it get rusty, but actually doing/ putting into action, what we learn from HIS wisdom. I grew up with this song in the 80’s and in fact Foreigner was the first concert I ever went to - I now realize the lyrics and the emotion fit exactly for my renewed intimacy with my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I was 18 n 1986. I’d been through so much. I had so so many health issues since I was 7 years old. It had so many horrible effects on my body. I was so literally lost and longing for love. These songs take me back to that time. I wish I could say I found the perfect love, it would have meant everything to me. But I didn’t. In my late 20s I dated some, experienced the things I needed to. Wanted desperately to feel things I just didn’t feel. I continued on but no one ever made me feel safe, and loved and cared for. I still enjoy these old song even though they take me back to a period of pain. Probably because I know I made it through. You learn to find your happiness in other ways. I’m ok. Not that I would say no thanks to love even now that I’m much older. Seems weird to say. I feel like I was young just yesterday.

The days are long gone and I pray that everyone reading this at one time in there lives finds out how it feels ,God does answer prayers I was 45 when I truly felt it for the first time , I married young and first wife never loved me. I remember she left me and i pulled up to stop light and she sitting right next to her new boyfriend,I was in my companies work truck and deliver packages had a rt. Had to turn off cause I didn't know what to do , My now ex wife was beautiful ,left me with at the time a two year old daughter she was the first thing on my mine when I woke up and the last thing on my mine as I went to bed. Remember praying even fasting for her to come back . Then I pray for God to heal my heart ,two year had past and one morning I woke up and realized I hadn't thought about her in almost two weeks. I actually cried and was thanking God for healing my heart I was not in love with her no more. Moved back to my home town and 25 years before my best friend was a girl and we were cruising and she said let's go to my new friends house she cool you' ll like her , she was actually living with a guy that I found out was very abusive towards her. Just another masterpiece from the 80's. Knowing what love is, is loving God and the beautiful beautiful woman He gave me 39 years ago. We are deeper in love now. We so enjoy listening to the 70s & 80s music, especially crusing in the exotic speed machine I bought her a few months ago, just because I like her. She still looks hotter than her car, and I don't mind that problem! Rock on! Onbtop of that we hve 7 adult children and our 5th grandchild due soon. I am the most blessed man alive!!!!!

I saw them in Tulsa in about 1985-86. When this was recorded they had a 250 voice black choir singing on it. You cant tour with a choir like that! So when i saw them they had the University of Tulsa select choir on stage with them. The best part was also on stage right next to them was a bunch of underprivileged kids who were there free as guests of the band. Foreigner never said a word about them. It wasnt for hype. It was their gift and showed the heart of the band. Their original lead singer is now a Christian.

Saw this band at the university of Oklahoma and for the choral part they had the concert choir sing the beautiful refrain. Great song anytime but live with a full choir was very special.
This is such an emotive song that I have LOVED since it was first released!! Apart from God's amazing and awesome love in my life since 1984 I have NEVER known real human love in my 69 years!! An unloving mother, in care and abused there at 4 yes, abandoned by my abusive father at 7, sexually abused by my older brother at 11 and then to marry a controlling and abuse husband at 21 where he emotionally, sexually and physically abused me for 7 years. Thank God - literally that I found Jesus who showed me that immense spiritual love. I guess I am too old now for human love but know true love from Jesus. Have NEVER known how to feel loved and be loved by another human but know my faith is strong to feel loved by Jesus.
