You’re right. There is a more emotionally direct way of communicating also. I notice that having a conversation with a Filipino can elevate my mood. The way they socialize openly with house parties, etc, is a healthier and better existence. They draw people in and the language is an enabler. Socially, this is the better model. I’m glad to be infected by it.

Courtesy, brotherly treatment, aren't "Christian" values. Sorry to burst your limited bubble. Virtually every culture/religion: Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc., teach respect and courtesy.

Hierarchy titles in social settings like ate, kuya, po, opo (roughly translated as 'yes maam or 'yes sir) aren't Christian either. East Asian cultures and philosophies which predate Christianity, for instance, talk about respecting elders or anyone of high-rank using titles such as San/sama (in Japanese) or Unnie/Oppa in Korean.

I’ve seen a lot of both countries and find them to be very comparable. The coasts are more impolite, cold and rude. The middle, interior parts are more polite, clean, organized and friendly. I do think America is more inclusive and a melting pot, whereas Canada is “separate and equal”. A good test of that is going to a street vendor and they will always treat my Filipino family members as not part of my order (annoying).

Here’s the American Filipino response that I received when I asked. I asked my Filipina wife this and her seemingly simple answer led to an hour long philosophical conversation. It was so simple that I shrugged off the answer at first, like it’s not an answer. She simply said “pragmatism” or doing what works best. I think this was a cultural survival trait from early times in the new world. The German military trainers complained about American revolutionaries refusing to do anything without an explanation. If something does not work or make sense, we won’t do it. If something else works better we’ll adopt it. It worked well in fighting the British because we would shoot their commanders and watch chaos ensue. When the British did the same, the troops would reorganize or fight independently. It also worked in fighting the Nazis in WWII. It was part of liberal arts education also. The idea is to build up the mental capabilities of the individual to be effective in any capacity. Thats why a foreigner comes to the US and they learn this before long and we are happy to see you succeed. We care about results.
