Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a RU-vid video every Tuesday & Friday plus an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 5:30pm GMT/BST on Twitch.

Greggs is nice and reliable. If you find yourself in a strange town you know what you're getting when you go to Greggs and honestly it's going to be more than half decent, even if not as exciting as you might get from a local baker. I'd go to a local bakery first but I'm not going to turn my nose up at Greggs. The vegetarian sausage rolls are also well worth trying even if you are a carnivore (as I am).

I'm in the north so it's almost required to like Greggs. We even have a Greggs drive-through up here. I don't like coffee, but I once had some Portuguese coffee-aficionado friends come to visit me, and they insisted on trying every coffee shop that they didn't have in Portugal, and Greggs actually got the nod as the best one.

those things were around in the early 90s in Warrens in the West Country. I've tried the Greggs ones and they ain't great in comparison sadly. The one Warrens do these days look fancier but they're very similar to 90s ones and much better than Greggs. The Greggs one just have a very cheapy vibe but then Warrens is expensive these days. As a formerly puzzled American l’m so glad to finally find out what a Greggs is. I’ve seen them loads of times on Google Street View and for some reason it never crossed my mind that it could be food. I thought it could be a stationery shop, convenience store, book shop…baked goods never crossed my mind. I checked their website and I wouldn’t mind trying a few things there if I ever visit the UK again.

I don't hate Greggs, but I regret that a year or so after they moved into my small town, two excellent family-run bakeries went out of business. Their pies, pasties and sausage rolls were much better than Greggs and, despite being smaller companies, they had a wider range of cakes, pastries and bread. Greggs was slightly cheaper, but not dramatically, so I guess it was the Greggs brand-name that drew the customers, especially the younger generation, and the smaller shops couldn't compete in the end. Such a shame!

Can you get better than a steak bake? Yes, but you'd have to alter the conditions set at 1:20 so that you could've bought the festive bake. Arguably wouldn't even need to do that since I'd choose a cheese and onion bake or a sausage, bean and cheese melt over a steak bake. Either way I also fall on the Love It side of Greggs. When I moved to the south coast in the mid 90s there were no Gregg's down here. The cheapest cheese and onion pasty in a local bakery was £1.00, whereas in Gregg's in Durham it was 41p. I enjoyed a sausage roll or two from a branch of Thurstons in Sheffield in the mid 70s, which I think was owned by Greggs by then, but wasn't branded as Greggs. I don't recall them as particularly memorable. I think the company has grown massively since last I was in the UK, 20 yrs ago. It wasn't the household name back then that it seems to be today. My Dad's dad (yes, my Grandad, but I never met him, killed in WW1) was 'in service' (a servant) as a pastry chef in a big house. Consequently my Dad picked up many of his skills, mainly savoury stuff, though he could bake a mean cake too. Dad's sausage rolls were famous and in the village (more accuratelya small suburb) where I grew up, he would start getting orders for home-made Christmas fayre, inc. Sausage rolls, but also rich, alcoholic Christas cake and Christmas puds (I know it's not your bag!) in October most years. the house would reek of sherry, whisky and cake for weeks on end - and while we were comparatively poor, we never had a duff Christmas really, because his takings from baking exceeded his salary (he worked as a manager in a little local store - what you would call a 'General Store' I guess). He used to make-up tea, a scoop on a sheet of paper and a few flicks of the wrist and he'd make a little, sealed (leak-proof) box, same with flour, sugar etc. If someone asked for a quarter of cheese (quarter of a pound) he would take a cheese wire and ciut it from the block - dead on a quarter - every time! Alchemy. Personally, I'd only eat Greggs as a last resort, not because i hate it, but because it's 'convenience food and, my wife has a Cordon Bleu qualification, so why would I? :)

It was the previous CEO that turned Greggs from a bakery which happened to do baked goods into a food-to-go business, to great success. I see comments about using a local bakery instead but I don't have one. It used to be the Greggs but, for bread, it couldn't really compete with the nearby supermarket (which also does sausage rolls, but they're shite).

You went to Rainham? Oh you poor thing, I hope it wasn't too traumatic there. In all seriousness I thought it was illegal to go to a GR Eggs and not get a large warm sausage roll. 🤷‍♂ Random idea... why not compare Greggs and other bakeries vs supermarket versions.

Greggs recent clothing range in Primark did my head in. I felt sorry for any tourist with no idea who probably happily bought the stuff! Just a baffling collaboration! Fond of the edible stuff, though, when in the mood!

greggs was THE place for a hot sausage roll, then they changed them for some reason and now they are as salty as fu@k and I know a few others who think the same, none of us buy them anymore. There's a bakers in Broad Oak near Rye, best sausage rolls around by far. they do, pork, pork and apple, pork and honey, and pork and chilli. they also do the largest chelsea buns you'll ever see

Addendum: I place Greggs coffee somewhere between Starbucks and Costa. I really don't like Starbucks but love Costa, Cafe Nero is great too. A high Street coffee reaction would be a great video I think 🤔

I suppose mass production bakers have a place in the modern High Street, but the food tastes like what it is, cheap, massed produced junk barely fit for human consumption, like McDonald's or Burger King. If you were spoilt enough to have had a good local bakers or a mum like mine who could cook and bake better than anyone else, then a bite of a Greg'gs product is to truly taste disappointment.

Find it a bit embarrassing for us Brits that the non-UK internet has fallen for all the Greggs memes. It's not good food, or even meant to be good food - it's just there to keep you alive for under 2 quid. Pure, stodgy, lukewarm, unhealthy sustenance

LOVE Greggs 👍. It’s probably easier to ask what Greggs product we don’t like. None - we love them all.
