Staying at home means SO MUCH MORE COOKING TIME. We got 3 amateur cooks to try making the simplest and most delicious Japanese recipes, most commonly made at home.

Emma's Recipe: Omurice
-cook rice
-fry small bits of chicken and half an onion
-fry until brown then add rice.
-Add ketchup and demi glace sauce to taste
-Add peas or any extra vegetables you want.
-whisk 3 eggs with a small amount of milk until combined
-oil the pan and keep it on a LOW HEAT I THINK but she did a high heat
-slowly fold the egg on top of itself, trying to keep the inside less cooked
-after egg is on rice then top with demi-glace sauce or ketchup

Donburi is my usual "go to" Japanese dish - either Oyakodon (already mentioned), Gyudon or teriyaki salmon donburi. They are all super easy and fast.

Tell Emma she needs to lower the heat when cooking the egg, it needs to be runny not dry when cooking it to get it shaped the way u want.

And, while oil may work okay, might I suggest butter for your pan lubricant.

The added soy milk (or any milk really) will only serve to make the egg more crumbly too. Leave it out to get an omelette that doesn't break easily.

@@thedarthvader2061 The problem is that because the heat was so high, the egg was setting at the bottom too quickly and it probably would have burned had she let it set much more.

It also looked like she didn't allow the runny egg to drip to the edges of the pan, which really helps it get cooked evenly while keeping the top juicy.

Emma should start simple. Turn down the heat a bit, LET IT SET, stop scrambling it with chopsticks, be realistic and use a spatula and a little oil in her pan if she is having issues with the nonstick. I love Emma but more patience with letting it set.

Them complimenting their own cooking is me cooking lol. Add one ingredient that the recipe didn't call for, "I'm basically pro. Restaurants don't even know how lucky they are that I don't open up shop." Also, Alex's chopstick technique is very interesting. Good job, all! Be well.

The sense of achievement with all three girls was great to see. Having sauces and flavors in bottles and cans these day just make these dishes so much more assessable to us mere mortals. Of course there will be disasters , nobody gets it right every time......... except Chris ! 🤔 Errr! Anyway how do you think some of these awesome dishes come about ...... Because someone forgot the onions and used Leeks instead. Back in the day Ug dropped his raw Archaeopteryx into the fire and hay presto! Yakitori !!!! 💕

MOAR cooking videos PLEASE. Emma, omlettes are usually cooked on medium or medium low heat. Using non-stick pan helps a lot but you still need to use butter or oil (vegetable) or a little of both. I believe your pan heat was too high and your pan was too deep making it more difficult to get under the egg for the initial fold. Alex, stews are so varied and generally easy. Just prep and throw in whatever you like and wait. Natasha, yaki udon (or soba or whatever noodles one prefers) is also a very simple dish with many options. The main thing is to cook the noodles separately until almost done. Then finish the cooking when you add them to the stir fry of vegetables and meat (or tofu) of choice. Overall well done everyone. Very impressed. Perhaps you can make another where you try to cook the same dish and compare each other's efforts? Or perhaps cook for a gathering (pot luck style) and feed your friends and let them vote on the best dish?

I love making katsudon. That crunchy-soggy texture, the caramelized onions, the flavor of the sauce... yum. Unfortunately, every time I've tried to make nikujaga it just isn't the right consistency. But Alex made it look so good, I guess I'll be trying again! Finally, I had Yaki-udon on my list of recipes for this weekend to try, so this was perfect timing coming across my dash. Thanks for the inspiring video!

Oh my goodness gracious! This is my favorite quarantine cooking video! Emma: I started growing plants in my house and whenever I water them I feel like a mini Emma San. Natasha: Your earrings are gorgeous as usual. Also a fun video would be you guys teaching us your home work out routines! Alex: Have you ever tried Carbonara? There's a specific type of meat used for the authentic recipes, but bacon tastes almost the same. My exchange sister from Italy made it alot

Nikujaga is one of my favourites, I cook it often minus the konjac noodles which I only found once in the supermarket - I just use tofu instead. Good job everyone!

Recipe!!!!! Boil spaghetti noodles. Brown a block of butter. And shred mizithra cheese. After you brown the butter, while hot, poor on to boiled noodles with the shredded cheese already on. And wahlla. Mizithra cheese spaghetti.

As for an idea to do a remote TC Play video; multiple choice quizzes :) I made a small quiz for my BF's 30th Bday and made people hold up papers with their answers (because you cannot understand each other when you're in a mass group call 😂). As for the content of the quizzes; anything Japan related would do. Which landmarks are in which provinces, Japanese history, music, etc.

I have a video suggestion!! I don’t know how well it would work with everyone being home and most living in apartments.... but, I have been looking online for examples of the average Japanese person’s garden. Not a stereotypical super fancy large thing but what the average person with a tiny bit of property would do for flowers or vegetables, their placement, stuff like that. There really isn’t much online but I am very interested to know more about it! One of my favorite things when I visited japan was the potted plants I saw outside everyone’s homes and businesses in Tokyo (SO MANY!!!) and I would love to know more about that as well, if possible. Maybe it’s not as easy to make when staying home but I would love to see this one day from you guys :)

Natasha, when cooking cabbage, if you use high heat, it goes in last. You only put it in early if you are boiling it. If cabbage starts to burn, it taste awful, and it burns easily on high heat.

Emma, don't worry too much about it. Omelette, and especially that kind, are surprisingly tricky to make and it's usually used as a way to test the skills of pro cooks as it requires some technique. If you're still interested in making it (and you didn't do it yet, obviously lol) take a look at Alex's channel (formerly FrenchGuyCooking) he had a good video on it.

If a Teflon pan sticks too much, its a sign that its being cleaned too thoroughly. A good idea could be to reduce washing to wiping it down with a wet towel, instead of using dish soap. All the Teflon do is to make it easier for the fat to coat against the food, giving it non stick properties.

You should try making some side dishes! When I lived in Japan I taught myself to make things like kinpira gobo, hijiki no nimono, spinach gomae, kiriboshi daikon....super tasty and I continue to make them back home for my family :)

Holy cow, can I come by all of your places and indulge in this gorgeous food? Thanks for the fun vid! One possible serving suggestion-like in yakinuku, you can beat a raw egg and use it as a dipping sauce for the nikujyaga. It envelops the pieces of meat or potato in a luxurious, rich blanket, trapping the soup inside of it and goes perfectly when followed by a mouthful of warm rice. Man, I am so hungry now.

Those all look great and you guys made me hungry... it's like 2am here. :P I really started cooking only after I moved out the parents nest, and I was like... over 30 already. xD Anyways, I love doing a bunch of japanese derivative stuff, but I never made any of those recipes, or rather, what I do is the japanese immigrant version of them, further altered to personal tastes. I think much like in other countries with lots of japanese immigrants, the traditional dishes where modified to use what was available back when our ancestors reached the country.... for Brazil it was largely back in the 40s and 50s, WWII period. You can imagine back then importing food just wasn't a thing, so immigrants had to make do with what they could find. Of course, the everyday traditional food that Japan has today, some of it is pretty modern... like omurice. My mom, aunts and whatnot had never heard of it, because it just wasn't a thing when their parents and grandparents came from Japan. Extra tidbit, my mother side grandfather was a wagashiya. I know nothing of his history to be honest, but I know we still have some of the wooden molds used to shape the sweets with someone in the family. By comparison, those traditional sweets are ancient.... :P They come from green tea ceremony era after all. I personally like making yakisoba, kare rice, sekihan, all sorts of onigiri mixes, inarizushi and others. Inarizushi is one of these interesting things... here in Brazil, you can expect to always find inarizushi in bentos made by japanese immigrant families, but I don't remember seeing it anywhere in Japan on both trips I made. I mean, I know you can find them, but I kinda thought they were gonna be waay more common. Also, it should be a priority for the vegan living in Japan. xD It's fried tofu and rice, super delicious, and practical. It's a bit of work to make them though.

it was really fun to watch all of you cook and you are all good cooks no need to be self conscious after all cooking is an art not a science also your dishes all looked yummy and like something I would like to eat I'm gonna do my best to see if I can make all three since I do enjoy cooking myself as well but don't often cook japanese cuisine but since I have all this time during quarantine it is a good time to try

For the Chinese techniques (which, not surprising are a lot like Japanese techniques, but with less sake and mirin) I suggest watching chef Fe's channel Happy Wok. He doesn't talk much, but you can learn a lot from watching, and he is always happy to answer questions.

Hi Alex, from Malaysia.🤗🤗 agar-agar and agak-agak heh. , I thought u from UK or US. But u from Malaysia, I feel proud about that. And Emma you omurice look delicious, in Malaysia and Singapore also have similar with omurice, we call it Nasi Goreng Pattaya. I also like to try Natasha food Yaki Udon and Alex food too Nikujaga. It's look delicious I like to recommend how about you guys try to cook something familiar with your own country after this. Maybe it's will be quite interesting and for fun. @UCAKZ2vtm_-hfqeCGTNNbZqA Emma, whenever you cook eggs you should always coat the pan in a fat or oil to prevent it from sticking. I've had trouble with eggs sticking without it even in the best of non-stick pans. I normally use butter, but since you can't eat dairy(I think?.... sorry if I'm remembering wrong), I would suggest putting a little bit of a neutral flavored oil, for example vegetable oil, on a paper town and rubbing it on the pan while it's cold. That should resolve your sticking problems :) Also the casual swear at 15:53 was both unexpected and priceless. It made my day, lol. *edit* darn. you can mention another channel in a community post on your own channel but not in the comments section of another video. Lame.
