Forest Terrarium with HUGE Beetle │ Closed Native Terrarium - 1 Month Update

In this video we take a look at the native terrarium built on the 20th of July 2020. The terrarium was home to a vast array of creatures and this video will be showcasing some of the life still present alongside newer organisms that have emerged. If you notice things aren't shown in the video that were present in earlier ones it's either because it's hiding during filming or it has perished.
The glass has created a new habitat where springtails, mites and tardigrades roam. I find it so fascinating that such a diverse community of species have carved out an existence on the glass. The humidity on the glass provides the moisture they need for egg laying. The glass also builds up with organic detritus over time which provides food lower down in the food chain. I imagine the species that live on the glass are also safer from predation than on the terrarium floor. I find the diversity in species astounding and I was so amazed to see a tardigrade!
The terrarium floor hosts a different community of organisms. Isopods, spiders, springtails, snails and slugs. This different habitat is dominated by two main predators. A Harvestman and a Black Clock Beetle. The Black Clock Beetle seems to have gorged itself on prey, which caused it to grow fat.
Organisms such as the rove beetle, millipede and earthworm were also present, however I struggled to get any good footage of them for the video because they live underground where visibility is poor.

@@Cargoshots No, this is a natural amount of insects. Soil, rocks, moss, and especially leaf litter are teaming with life even more than shown in this very video. This is all sustainable, there are multiple species that share the same general niche and have one specific niche decreasing competition. The only concern is the large beetle, but it won’t cause too much trouble considering debrivores are abundant, but time will tell.

This is terrific... The original video of t'is terrarium inspired me to make my first terrarium with fauna - an despite losing the woodlice and a particularly large species of springtail I can now observe a happy colony of millipedes, earthworms, springtails, mites and snails from the comfort of me own jar - and I know for a fact there's at least one baby centipede in there ready to unleash hell when he gets big enough

You dont need to water it, if it's a closed terrarium. Closed terrarium means that there can't get water or air in or out the terrarium. If its closed like that you just need to water it one time, when you build it. Hope that helps you🤗

@-insertnamehere-5503

I think you can put special isopods in there as well, but be careful, if you put too much of them in, a lot of isopods will die. But i wanna say something else. Please ignore what i said last time an make some the jar not compleate closed, because i build another one a few weeks ago and all died because if there is no fresh air but a lot of organic matter, the bakterias in there will produce methan that kills the animals :(

i love this!! i had a terrarium with 3 generations of rollie pollies, 3 generations of common garden snails, 2 generations of common black beetles, a caterpillar, plenty of earthworms, and a few small spiders! i loved it to death but ultimately decided to place the earth within it under my back porch for them to live normal buggy lives once more - mostly because we had a rental inspection coming up and our lease bans more than the 2 cats we have (and yes, insects, bugs, and fish were all clearly listed in it), but also because my terrarium was a much smaller one and it was definitely starting to get a bit crowded. the experience was amazing though, one of the most fulfilling hobbies i've ever had, i did so much research to help them all thrive and watching them make wee lil babies was just the most adorable thing!! thanks so much for sharing!
