It's because there's so much damn treble on this recording. I felt the same way when listening. I hate really treble-heavy recordings too... it's murder on the ears. You could perhaps try downloading this video as an mp3 file or something, then put it through some kind of equalizer and reduce the treble by a few DB to get a better balance. This might in turn make the vocals less distant-sounding. Might not solve the problem completely but that could at least improve it.
