one thing I like about this show is that the contestants are always really respectful. they never argue with the judges, or boast or anything like that. they all seem like nice people

I'm sure there has been more than a couple argue but they don't show it, it's unrealistic to think otherwise with money on the line. Not to mention when judges do make bad calls, I'm sure that has angered more than one contestant

GothAsFuck no blade in the world will get through that test without edge damage. If you make it hard enough to cut a bolt (in theory, it will NEVER be able to cut through a bolt) it’ll be brittle and break instead of roll. Bolt cutters use a completely different edge profile, and depend on leverage from the handles rather than sharpness.

Sisilia Ralulu well duh, that’s the point of such a ridiculous test, to count the imperfections. The judges aren’t expecting any blade to be the same after, just to see which one held up better... which happens here and in literally every single other strength test. If you listened carefully, they literally say in all strength test “it’s not what your blade does to the “insert” it’s what it does to the blade. Also the hardness of the bolt (roughly) simulates hitting against bone/armor/another weapon in real life combat.

Actually they do. The judges themselves perform the test they create beforehand in order to see if it's possible. And if it is, they make it into an episode.

What does it mean "it will cut"? It's a freaking blade, of course it will cut, that's what it does! You don't need the test to see if it can cut, but how deep and easy it can cut.

What I don't understand is why they do the strength test before the sharpness test. The blade basically gets destroyed in the strength test so why do that first? A blade is made for cutting things so do the cutting test first when the blades are in their finest quality. Then do the strength test.

@@outlawstar2090 the strength in two blades clashing together is almost nothing compared to the force of beating it straight forward onto a material as hard as a steel bolt. Its two different types of colliding forces. I believe it would be much more realistic and effective to use another knife instead of a bolt and just strike onto it.

@@Jimfeelfree_ I have never said anything about two blade clashing I said about the blade clash with other weapons not just a blade. Anyway the blade can break depending on how weak the material is made and who made the weapon. There's tons of factors in this and doing a strength test is abuse the weapon to see strong it can hold before it breaks so that next time the blacksmith will know what to do with the next blade they will built so it will be stronger and better than their usual weapons they had made before.

to everyone freaking out about how stupid the strength test is, its obviously not something that would happen in real life but its literally just to test how strong the blade is, NOT how it would do in the real world when you came across the challenge of smashing your knife onto a bolt. It's just to test the blade and see if they're heat treated well, how much damage they can take.

The judges assume the blade can cut prior to the strength test. The question of skill is can you construct a blade that can take the extremes and still perform. Some can win that kind of challange others cannot.

Guys the blades are supposed to be damaged. The test is too see which sustains the least amount of damage. Any blade would take damage from that.

That was a dumb test. A hardened blade vs. a case hardened bolt of course it is going to cause damage. Using a mild steel rod would have been a better test.

There is not a blade smith in the world that can hit a thin piece of hardened steel onto a large piece of hardened steel and not take damage. The larger thicker piece will always win. Unrealistic test for even the best blade smith’s in the world.

It's a tv show. Can't be so nice. If you want it to be realistic than it’s not as interesting. Anyway, all the blades are eventually going to be scrapped so you might as well test them to the very edge of their life. It shows how well the blade was made. How well the heat treatment was.

I just learned that the reasoning behind the weird way he says KEAL is that it's supposed to be his more family-friendly of saying Keep Everyone Alive. Though nobody took it that way, and it just became a meme. Either way, he came out on top haha.
