It's a stupid mistake, but it still was Jason's mistake that cost him the competition. They're given a minimum to work with and 1.5" was the minimum. He could've used a premade wooden dowel from Home Depot if he paid attention.

Look more like fishing spears than fighting spears. The barbed spear heads would be a detractor in combat I would imagine. Would get hung up, difficult to remove, recover and keep thrusting with. The barbed head more suited to keeping a fish on it.

Use brute force and rip it out. Many weapons such as Chinese ringed broad swords had those barbs and rings and flags on them to make them messier and deal more damage coming out.
