Backyard Mechanic Im building this in a Datsun 240z and was wondering if i should get this with a transmission or the 2jz with a transmission if they were the same price??

So factory manual has clearance tolerances as well as a torque sequence. Would it not have been best to try and match or follow the torque sequence? Nissan and Nismo as well as a few others have multiple different steps in their bearings to make up different tolerances(not that yours are bad). Like he said its splitting hairs, but if your a bunch out you could go out and get the nismo bearing to change your tolerance to be within spec.
@BackyardMechanic
@BackyardMechanic 7 лет назад
ogopogoful The final measurements were within spec. As for the sequence I've learned and been taught it only matters to go inside out when there's a gasket in between the two surfaces.
@FreddyDUZ747
@FreddyDUZ747 6 лет назад
Sorry but they are not within spec they are tight.Always torque inside to outside then when removing start from outside working way back in.Have a think about whats happening with your process and the process others are explaining.Investing in a air gun would be beneficial also.

Don't use basic sockets for setting torque, they twist, and can and do give incorrect torque settings. Also, start your torque settings IN SEQUENCE, and YES THERE IS A CERTAIN TORQUE PATTERN FFS.

Great video, you excited me ya said Friday bra haha! Say you had a bearing clearance way off what would you have to do? different bearing? shims to compensate?

probably crank or cradle is bent

James Frost First thing that's important is to get the tunnel line bored/honed. Make sure to give the bolts/studs you're installing to the machinist. ARP studs have more clamping force so they need to tighten them down with the ARP studs then line bore/hone. This makes sure that when you torque up your new studs it will be perfect. If you've done that and it's still off then the fault will most likely be the bearings. We didn't run into that problem and I'm not sure on the chances of striking a bearing that's way off. If it was me, I'd buy new bearings. But it would be wise to check with your machine shop and/or the garage who's gonna tune your car and see if there's any other reasons it could throw off that measurement. In saying all that if you measured it and it was all wrong check the crank journals to know they are the correct size. If they took a lot of material out when they did the tunnels that can effect the clearance too. Also check the thickness of the bearing shells. You'll hardly ever run into this problem

Yup I know you add royalty free music to your videos, but your dad was playing some music in the background, even small things like that will get you a copyright strike. Cheers from Canada!

No Offence but shouldnt you be measuring the tolerances in Metric not imperial as its a metric vehicle. and NIssan specs should be metric?

Just a little hint regarding your video titles: I would put the "part 2" at the beginning. Sometimes not all of the title is visible and viewers have no idea whether or not a specific video is part 2 3 4 or 1000 and might not click it.

torquing that pattern the way you first did it WILL warp the girdle.
@BackyardMechanic
@BackyardMechanic 7 лет назад
040mobil Will it?? How can you prove that?
@040mobil
@040mobil 7 лет назад
I have a bent one in my shop i can send to you if you like.I recieved a motor from a customer with the bearing clearances were "really weird" being his complaint. when I asked him he stated it was tightened starting at one end and going to the other because he was "only checking to see if the crank would spin" The VG30 cradle is a bit more forgiving due to its short length. The RB cradle is not.
@FreddyDUZ747
@FreddyDUZ747 6 лет назад
I think more the point is how can you disprove it?Im sure since this was all put on here you have since learned the correct procedures.
@exilerob
@exilerob 7 лет назад
This has infuriated me. I'm a mechanic by trade, and my background is performance and heavy diesel engine rebuilding. If your building a performance motor, I'd throw your old man out of the workshop. Starters: The girdle is required to be torqued up by sequence to make it lay out, this means it's taking the twist out of the girdle, as well is creating a correct seating, which is ESPECIALLY important when under load. NOT torquing to sequence can cause the girdle to be bound or restricted in it's lay, which can cause crank deflection, incorrect float, and unnecessary vibration. Although this seems minimal, it's take minimal to destroy a performance motor. Secondly: whoever the fk inspected your crank, needs to be fired. The pitting on that crank is disgusting. Thirdly: ARSEUMPTION on bearing clearances, at MINIMAL you should be using FACTORY clearances, MINIMAL, not ARSEUMING that 1.5 is ok, if ANYTHING you should have rung performance machine shops that do these engines and spoke with them. Forth: Saying that you can't change the difference in clearance is ABSOLUTE BS! AGAIN, ASK THE QUESTION< DON'T ARSEUME! Mate Seriously, you need to approach what and how your doing this, your transferring alot of incorrect information
@BackyardMechanic
@BackyardMechanic 7 лет назад
exilerob Thats your opinion, perhaps what you were taught from your learning sources is different to how my dad was taught. My dads rebuilt performance motors aswell. He's seen some shit. I'm not going to get into a huge debate. You know as well as many other trade mechanics, you have your own way of doing things. Your own procedures ect. I trust in what my dad has taught me and done. I've also crossed over measurements to others who have built this engine. I'm confident in my dad and his trade. There's other shops and places that mess things up and aren't perfect. Should this engine break, I'll just fix it. I respect your views on the matter, and I'll take what you've said into account when I build motors going forward
@exilerob
@exilerob 7 лет назад
It's not an opinion so much as a specific field of industry understanding. I was taught in professional racing teams, the top levels mate. However I respect your reply, but certainly take what myself and others who do rebuild these motors often have said, on a serious note. I probably shouldn't have been so brutal on your Dad, but I see this so often, and heart break from it so often, that i'm sick of repairing engines from incorrect procedures, or lack of understanding on these motors, and sick of seeing young fella's loose so much due to it. Other then that, your cars coming along nicely.

Why do you say that?
@IaMaWeSoMe7478

Backyard Mechanic Most likely because of the oil pump issues, etc that plague the rb26 due to its design..
@forgeperformanceand4x4

cringed a few times during this. 1 girdle should be torqued down as per manufacturer spec from inside out 2 1.5 thou is very tight for what is claimed to be a race motor. despite what your dad said you can alter the clearances by mixing bearing packs.
