I feel like modern ribbon microphones sound more invisible than condensers. They make you feel like you're in the room with whatever instrument you're hearing.

@@EdThorne I can totally see that. It has the kind of nice relaxed tone that would compel someone listening/watching to "lean back" and take it all in. End fire mics stay out of your way on camera and, simply, it seems to really suit your voice quite well. It's definitely a keeper.

I'd highly recommend Golden Age Projects for a more budget to mid-priced ribbon microphone. They're really well built and sound phenomenal.

I have no ribbon mics - primarily due to fragility (but that was a long time ago - and perhaps really not that true especially with the new ones as you indicate) - Thanks for the education on this subject Ed 👍😊

I’ve been using the N8 for a few years (very early series numbers). Nice natural sound. But looking to get kU5A for a closer mic scenario.

Ribbon microphones such as the RCA 44 and 77 are typically figure of 8 pattern and exhibit extreme proximity effect, so much so that they have circuitry to reduce the proximity effect which can be modified through a switch or jumper. I have quite a few ribbon microphones including RCA, Shure, Bang & Olufsen, beyerdynamic, plus one that I built myself. Other than the beyerdynamic, all are very fragile and can be damaged by blowing into them. High sound pressure levels are not a problem, but close miking a kick drum can kill vintage ribbons due to air movement. AEA and beyerdymamic I really like the sound of a ribbon on certain voices, stringed instruments and certain percussion. What preamp is used has a great effect on the sound.

I will sound good. But remember each house is subjective. Personally I use the SE Dynacaster for my podcast (with Dynamite mode on).

I have harshness in my voice around 3 k and usually, I'm boosting 2k and cutting 10k, it's like this mic was made for me! I'm getting one after I return this 251 clone.
