Forgetting What the Old People Endured During the Long Walk - Navajo Teachings

When our people were rounded up and marched to the prison camp in Fort Sumner... The journey was difficult.
They didn't have food, their clothes were tattered and torn. Many were sick with new diseases they had never faced before.
The conditions were poor.
When they were finally able to leave. They said none of us will return to this evil place.

Aloha and A'ho from Shainia daughter of Hannimal Two Moon's and Likaleialani Lumpura Kukonu; I always listen and learn from your teachings of our past. As painful as it is it's important we not forget. Again I must pray that the feelings of hatred inside of me be healed by our Creator. I don't need to like their ways or what they continue to do. I must forgive them or it will make me ill. Love to all my brother's and sister's and may the pain you have be healed. Aloha

Aloha. Being of light. I understand I have relatives who were original settlers from Europe. Within my heart beats an indigenous person, enslaved by the civilization I was born into, Breaking Free finally. I grieve the tragedy that people who I share my lineage have inflicted so much harm to the world. And to you, and your family, and your beautiful islands. On behalf of people whose lineage I share, I apologize to you for the harm, with deepest sorrow over your losses, and full prayers that your people & place will experience recovery and restoration to health.

Hearing your story makes me cry at how heartless people can be and what your people went through. I feel your story very deeply in my heart. My grandfather's family was brutally gunned down for being Jewish in Ukraine when Nazis invaded Kiev in the 1940's. Only my grandfather escaped this brutality when he came to America in the early 1900's. We need to always remember because it can happen again if we do not learn from history. I am grateful you are sharing this history with us. Only thru learning and changing and expanding will be be able to bring balance back to this materialistic society. Seems like a difficult job but it is possible if we all love Mother Earth more than our vacations.

Thank you again for sharing your culture with us. Few teach factual history these days. Most young Americans probably don’t know this history or the geography you shared. Being a history buff, I’ve read about this, yet you’ve added so much. It’s truly unfortunate and sad Europeans treated natives alike no matter which tribe they were dealing with. The arrowhead story is one I’ve never heard. If only people held the level of respect you speak of, our country would be United rather than divided.

I have definitely felt it, had a sense of connection throughout life. It's brought some outward rebellion and internal sadness. Somehow I have been able to pick up on tidbits of it in other extended family. We are a bit diluted, watered down so to speak but our people came from east Tennessee, western North Carolina. Final destination was lower, far southern Missouri after the Civil war is about as far as they made it from what I understand.
