You need to make a punch, but in order to make a punch, you need a punch to punch your punch. I give you the Blacksmith’s Paradox.
This is a quick and simple little video showing you don’t need any fancy tools in order to create your punch, just keep it simple stupid. :)

I made a 2 lb straight peen from 1080 carbon steel 1-3/8” that I use daily and I used some of that rod for the drift and it’s short uneven and chunky I’ve got some 1541H to make a drift from and make the. Handled punch from too. I currently use a sharpened handled 5/8” punch but it’s not super nice for the job so I’m gonna make a new punch and drift. I enjoyed this video. :) and subscribed

for the future if you find your self in need of a hammer eye punch in a pinch. you have a drift, grab a decent ball pein hammer, forge the flat side down into the hammer eye punch, insert the drift, hammer the ball side roughly flat for the struck side of the punch, harden the punch side while leaving the struck side soft. hang tool on handle. Voila! handled hammer eye punch with no punch.

Good advice. May well try this in the future. Cheers. :)

I just started blacksmithing as a hobby, and I love it. I also have my heart set on making my own hammer. I've already made 2 drifts (after 3 attempts) out of EN19 steel and plan to make a hammer eye punch next. Thus, I found your video very helpful and encouraging. I hope you don't mind, but I have a few questions - 1. What are the chances that you could make a follow-up video on how to make a hammer with the basic tools you've made (and without anyone to give a helping hand)? Maybe you could answer my other questions below in your video? 2. You mentioned you used EN24 for your punch? Is there a specific reason for it, or would EN19 work just as well? 3. Did you heat treat your punch in any way? 4. Would EN19 be a good choice to make a hammer from (once I've made all the required tools first, of course)? If so, how can I heat treat it without any fancy equipment (harden and temper)?

Wentzel Coetzer Well that is quite the comment! Ok, I’ll do my best to answer, though please bear in mind I am still a rookie myself. ;) 1. I do plan on trying to make my own hammer at some point in the future, and I will of course video it when I do. However having recently made a hot-cut hardy tool out of a large piece of steel, I can tell you that trying to shift such a large hunk of metal with no striker/power hammer is a hell of a task, and I’m not sure how effectively I will be able to do this at my current skill level. Because of this, it may be some time until I have the nerve to attempt it. 2. I used EN24 steel after watching a Alec Steele video (in the US 4340 steel) in which he explains that it has a very high tensile strength, and it’s very good at keeping its shape even at high temperatures. If you imagine the drift is basically acting as an internal anvil when you are shaping the steel around it, you don’t want something that is going to lose its shape and ruin the eye of your tool. My understanding is that EN19 would probably be absolutely fine as it is a similar alloy, used for car axels and the like. It might not be as good, but I’m sure it’d serve the purpose you’re after. 3. Yes I did heat treat it. I initially hardened it by heating it to critical in the forge (you can tell when it’s at critical by testing when it has lost it’s magnetism using a small magnet), and then tempering... ah the tempering question... I did temper mine for about 2 hours in a standard oven at 200degrees C, until it turned a golden straw colour... however this was more to protect the punch from breaking immediately on striking it, rather than aiming for a specific hardness. The aim for me was to get rid of the brittleness, but it is very likely the temper will be ruined anyway as soon as you start using your tool as you’re going to be sticking it in yellow hot steel. in the case of the drift, for long periods of time. 4. My understanding is the ideal steel for hammers is EN8 steel. I’ll be honest, I can’t precisely remember why, but again, this is from watching an Alec Steele tutorial. In regards to tempering it... I probably would do in a similar way to the above, but honestly I’ll have to look into this more myself when I finally get around to trying it myself. Hope some of this helps, Cheers!

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my questions - its very informative and helpful. I've subscribed to your channel and will keep an eye out for your hammer making video in the future ;) All the best with your blacksmithing endeavours.

nice punch, two points to mention, cheeks look a bit thin and the angle of the point might be a bit much for smaller stock. you may want to try a more acute angle.

What The Forge Blacksmithing Hey man, you're right on both points. The cheeks are on the small side, but the stock material I used was smaller than I'd have liked to start with, so there wasn't that much to draw out. I also haven't yet made any fullers, so I was limited to just using a cross pein hammer (which I also need to grind a less acute angle on). Regarding the angle of the punch, I've actually already altered this and ground is down to a sharper point. :)

How thick was the material out of which you made the drift and the punch?
@PJTForging
@PJTForging 5 лет назад
I think it was only 1in round stock if memory serves... but it was a while ago. Maybe 20mm?
