Help! I've looked high and low for a video or a site that gives some ideas on how to make loud jingle bells or one that can be easily heard from afar and yours was the first that gave me a few ideas. Thank you! Do you think that a loud bell needs (1) a bell body and a pellet that are made of a hard material (like steel) rather than a dense material (like lead); (2) a thin sheet metal for the bell body rather than a thick sheet metal; and (3) a greater bell body surface that is open to the outside rather than less? Thank you.
You're going to have to experiment. These took a bit of fiddling to make an acceptable sound, and the sound is not consistent from bell to bell. Steel or bronze will probably be your best choice, lead does not ring at all as far as I am aware. There's a lot of science that goes into proper bell design and I am not savvy in that field, hah. Best of luck!
@@LtJerryRigg Thank you. I had done some modification of a small bell and from the experience, I think a loud bell requires (1) The bell body to be made of a reasonably thick sheet metal; (2) The sheet metal and pellet to a made of a hard material like hardened steel; (3) The opening to be as large as possible for the sound generated internally to escape outwards and join the externally generated sound, yet small enough to prevent the pellet from escaping; and (4) The pellet to be spherical in shape, as it would allow the pellet to continue to roll inside the bell even at the slightest movement of the bell.
The sound is very interesting, I am a drummer, and have always been infatuated with bells. Are they for sale? I would love to add one to my collection.
