Forging a short katana from a coil spring. I used a hammer handle, a piece of old iron, a bolt and of course a coil spring to make this epic sword. More information about forging this Katana sword on my Website

This is honnestly icredible! Good job! For those who don't know, katanas aren't made by only one person, there are lots of parts related to the process of making an actual katana. First you need to make the blade's steel which takes several days, shape the steel (japanese katanas take a process of shaping which envolves 1000 layers of the same steel on itself), polish the steel and then make the grip! All of this can take up to 3 months depending on the quality of the steel.

Good points. I think his talent is impressive, but these people who have no skill say all sorts of annoying things because they want to feel like they have some worth or say. As a talentless person myself, I felt critical about this beautiful sword because I felt its a lot of time and skill required for something not really pragmatic, but nonetheless its beautiful art that can slice too. I guess I just really find swords cumbersome and pointless these days.

Closer to wakizashi, a katana is 80-120cm long. Also, the blade profile looks more like a chinise sword than a japanese one. But with those inaccuracies out of the way, It should be good at chopping wood and enemies alike.

a katana's curve doesnt happen by hammering. but from the difference hardness of metal in one blade and it curves when it is quench
@jckel10
@jckel10 6 лет назад
Unquestionably cool, but also not a Katana or even a Wakizashi, in any sense of the word. A Katana is not a curved sword, A Katana is a specific type of sword of special properties attained through a long folding, and quenching process using Japanese steel called tamahagane. And the curve is not shaped by hand its done by applying varying layers of slurry and quenching to obtain different properties in the blade and the edge, the process of which gently causes the steel to pull itself into a natural cure. But it is a cool short sword. And you are undoubtedly a master craftsman in your own right.
@sigismasigisma
@sigismasigisma 6 лет назад
And the Japanese only took the time to fold their steel forever cause they only had very shitty steel.
@jckel10
@jckel10 6 лет назад
LOL, That must be why the true Katana's are revered by collectors around the world. You are of course entitled to your opinion, which I can respect, as I'm sure it’s backed up by years of experience, and not just a belittling prejudicial outburst.
@BlackSephtis
@BlackSephtis 6 лет назад
Elisa's actually right, in feudal japan they had very low quality iron, full of impurities, which resulted in the need to fold the steel to hammer out the impurities, resulting in a better steel than would be the result had they not done the folding.
@jckel10
@jckel10 6 лет назад
Yes and no. That over simplifies the process. Was good steel hard to come by yes. But that was not the reason. Folding steel is the process they used to impart specific elements to different sections of the sword, they weren't just pounding together steel until they had a good enough product to use. Each fold and separation had a purpose. Purifying was just one reason. Lowest carbon steel is called hocho-tetsu, which is used for the core of the blade. The high carbon steel tamahagane and higher carbon nabe-gane, was forged in alternating layers to form the very hard steel of the edge, called hagane and the flexible metal jacket, called kawagane. That doesn’t mean every sword made was good, then or now. Nor was every sword maker a master, then or now. I've been training in the martial arts since the late 1970's, including Kenjutsu, and fencing. That doesn't make me an expert in sword making, just had a fascinated with it for the last 46 years or so.

Seems like everyone on YT read the same wikishitia page about katanas and believe they are experts on the topic. LOL no. Katanas were not a standard length. They were made to suit the height and arm length of the wielder, and mass-produced blades did come in different set lengths. Custom blades were made to suit. Katanas were not exclusively made from folding different metals like damascus; most were made from single alloy castings because of logistical and practical requirements. It is a myth that all "authentic" japanese katanas were of some mythical quality - most were relatively low grade because they were used to equip armies of expendable grunts. Only wealthy/high ranking officers and individuals got the good ones. Spring steel is already a good compromise between hardness and flexibility. This blade should hold an edge well without breaking if actually used. He never claimed it to be the best katana ever, nor did he claim any particular grade of quality. While a katana was generally a slender long sword, this does not qualify by being too short, but it fits the katana aesthetic. Machetes are made for chopping and have a heavier tip / light handle. This one seems more balanced, although he did not show its balance point (which he should have).

@throrgrim6844

The reason the metal was folded so much is because of the poor quality of Japanese iron, it had to be done in order to strengthen the steel to sufficient quality. It has gained a mythical status through legend and modern media. Many Westerners still believe katanas to be almost magical in their strength and cutting ability because of this.
@LeaderofStupid
@LeaderofStupid 5 лет назад
To be fair, there is still one point of contention: most metalsmiths of feudal times were not able to smelt adequately enough for katana type swords to survive. Its why you don't see tons of swords floating around from that era.

Hi Jake: I'm not gonna say anything negative. Because that doesn't help anyone and that's not who I am. Good job on the build of the sword and a congradulations on a video well done! Interesting choice of metal for the full tang. Coils springs have memory and whether you used a standard coil spring or a variable rate coil spring, the interesting factors of either can only be known under testing of the sword for cutting power on various materials...meat, bamboo, and possibly some cans of Campbell's soup cans for their thickness relative to skin or light body armor. Balance is another characteristic worth looking into both for the draw and under weilding of the sword! The tsuba however, while well made and original in material and design. It did appear to be a bit too small to provide protection by a glancing cut by an attacker! The handle length is also too short to be held by two hands and weilded for specific cuts and blows! It is important that the full tang not fracture nor develop fractures nor shatter under a collision or contact by another sword or object. Overall Great job!
