Forging A Rounding Hammer (from a mini sledge hammer) 

Horrible failure!? Dude. That hammer looks awesome! Handles are easily replaced. I wish i could produce a hammer like that one. I, for one. Have been inspired to try this myself. Thank you!

Don’t worry about over tempering. I take all hammers i make for use with forging and temper to a blue purple. I’ve used a mild steel hammer for a while with very little damage. It’s for using with tools like punches and the hot cut hardy. When working hot iron even mild steel or annealed carbon steel is much harder than the hot iron

Ive heard many professional blacksmiths say that any working tool like a hammer shouldnt be hardened so they dont flake and chip with use

That wood looks like old ash. I always use hickory but oak should be ok.... not as much spring back as hickory and will break sooner.

Bloke just a thought if your on Facebook search groups for blacksmith group and knifemaking groups you may know this already but you can join them great communities and loads of advice and skills.

Next time leave a bit of the handle poking through the top of the head. It may not look as nice as cutting it off level, but it makes it more secure.

When you tempered the hammer in the forge, how were you able to determine the color (the temperature of the temper)? How long did you let it soak?

the head came out really good. you were on a hiding to nothing with that existing handle wood, should be all good when you get something better

Try a fiberglass handle.
