Nice knife, great video. Friendly tip I found out the hard way too. I get a practically unlimited amount of bearings from my buddy. Our metal heat treat expert friend says preheated mineral oil is best for 52100. We all get cracks sooner or later. Thanks for showing the viewers bad stuff will happen. Cheers!

Enjoyed that, cheers. What's your best guess as to the cause of the first crack? Did you fail to make an offering to the appropriate deity?

Haha not quite, but i'm pretty sure it was overheated during forging as the crack was jagged and didn't follow the grind lines

That's called the edge flex test, after heat treat I flex the edge of the knife over the rod to see if it flexes and returns to true, if it stays bent it is too soft, if it chips it's too hard.

Typical knife maker. If the blade cracks you don't cry, yell or scream. You just shrug and start over. Now that's a knife maker!

Thanks mate, yeah I tend to use a mandrel in the shape of the tang because it's easier to not clean the blade after or have to worry about detempering the edge. Yeah it was one of my chooks wondering what I was up to

@@BelfastBodger of course, I actually show one of the normalising cycles in the video. I normalise three times in a step down process.
