Here I am forging the brake ratchet & handle for the Peidmont wagon. This wagon did not originally have a brake, but the current owner requested one to be installed. Thanks for watching!

Thank you once again for taking the time and going to the trouble to video and edit your work, and for sharing it. Other RU-vid content providers would do well to learn from you how to present their work.

Awesome video...great editing with 'just right' background music. It was neat watching you 'walk' that camber into the ratchet. Absolute masterful work, showing a good eye and correct physical effort! ....13

I see quality built into every custom piece you build. Because of this I imagine your forge work especially outlasting (in measure of time) the hardware you utilize to make these duplicates.

Very nice ECS. Blacksmithing and metal work is a trade that I've only recently become aware of and interested in. I guess I will have to settle for watching video's like yours and others as I haven't the tools to even begin on a basic level. I will say that your skills seem as honed in blacksmithing as the people whom specialize in the trade. I enjoyed your video and will like and share as well :) Keep em' coming, Steph_Louisiana

love the music! are you teaching anyone your skills? it would be a shame for you to take all that knowledge to the grave with you. I know these vids will be on RU-vid, but that's not the same as someone actually learning your craft.

Very nice job Mr. Engel, its all in having the right tools for the job but you have to know how to use those tools properly and you have that down pat. My wife and I participated in a Farm day at a local recreated 1800s homestead here in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains of N.C. I got to help make molasses from start to finish. There was an old farm work/utility wagon there ,don't know the proper name and I thought of you. Enjoy your videos very much. Take care and God bless.

Nice upset technique and use of the bick in the initial bends to square them. Nice hammer finish (no rasp) on the lines of the bar stock and pritchel/drift forging holes for the pivot. Efficient use of the power hammer. You are a master both in wood and iron. I have enjoyed every one of your videos.

I appreciate your work and have learned a lot from the videos. Is there a way to tone down the hammer sound when you speed up the video? Listening with earphones is tough on the ears. On normal speed it’s no problem. Thanks.

After you put the flat bends in the ratchet, you did a lot of hammer work on the bends. Was that to even out the thickness differences from stretching the outside and compressing the inside?

I love it. I do quite a bit of metal fabricating but not forge work perhaps because I don't have a forge. I do however like you use my torch when I need it. Watching your abilities in fabricating these brake components was very interesting. I think you are a very skilled craftsman and I love watching you work.... and I'm learning something every time! Thank you!

I realize this video is about a year old but perhaps my comments will be appropriate for future videos. I am a woodworker but am fascinated by the blacksmithing. I can see the "how" you are doing something but in many cases not the "why". Please a bit of commentary about the "why". And you skipped the shaping of the teeth on the ratchet. Did you saw them or did you grind them? And you drilled several holes and then enlarged them with a punch. Why?
@glencrandall8334
@glencrandall8334 6 лет назад
Thanks. I will look for a video showing the cutting of the teeth. Your explanation of the holes makes great sense.

Great skill and workmanship. I’ve watched other blacksmith videos but your videos like your work are excellent. I specifically like the editing as I don’t have to watch every hole drilled or all the hammering to see what you’re doing although I do like the actual blacksmith shots after you’ve heated the metals. I thoroughly enjoyed this video, thank you.

When you forge the "tooth" on the brake handle, do those sharp ends/corners of the "tooth" ever fracture from the stress riser? Would it be worth turning hemispheres or radii on the ends of the fuller to eliminate the sharp forged corners? I've just discovered your RU-vid channel, and have binge-watched your videos, starting with the first ones through to this video! Thank you very much for documenting your work -- what you do is impressive.

I have been thinking how I'd go about this and saw this video on your channel. Pretty much what I had thought on forming the ratchet teeth. But seeing you design the prices from scratch really helps me figure out how to do it right, and have it all fit and work correctly. Really nice video.

Never noticed teeth so sharp on the ratchet notches. After some thought; I guess I've never seen a new one! Ha Ha! I laughed at myself and all the old cobbled together junk that I have seen and worked with "Made-do and mended" on various farms over the years. Thank you, again.

All in a days work for you but very interesting and enlightening . You make this type of restoration look so easy which I know would not be for many of us who watch and follow your progress. The background music is very pleasant to listen to as it's at a low level and doesn't drown out the sounds of your anvil and drilling work, All in all another excellent video, thanks for letting me share a small part of your working day once again.

Nice job!! Blacksmithing is the type of work I do. Back in the late 1990's I completed a 4 year blacksmithing apprenticeship through the National Park Service. Hardware is what I like to produce most.
@IronClad292
@IronClad292 7 лет назад
Well, apparently the program is no longer going unfortunately. Something about budget cuts. However, Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia has an excellent Blacksmithing apprenticeship program. The program I completed was excellent. It started off with learning how to file. We had to produce 3 different projects using a file. I was filing for months. It included a class taught by a Representative from the Nicholson file company. The first forging project was to produce 12 feet of 3/8" square rod made from 1/2" round rod. This project was to learn hammer control. The 3/8" square rod had to be perfect in dimension without any hammer marks on the final product. Each project built upon the other. Another project was to make nails. To pass this project, we had to make 2 complete and perfect nails in 1 minute for one hour. That's 120 nails in one hour. Basically, that's making one nail in one heat as well. By the end of the program, I was making all kinds of stuff for the Park Service including Beaver traps, chain, wagon parts, door hinges, door handles, nuts, bolts, rivets, tools, etc.......

rats, So much truth it makes me appreciate it's better to be on the way out and not the way in .Being retired a few years now I notice these things as I have time to look and study the way things are heading, a lot of younger people are not taught the basic essential education because if it's not on a' pooter' screen in virtual reality it does not exist. Since leaving school and having to work for a living been saying for a long time that eventually the people who do manual work with their hands to make things will become top dog. Old timer from England.

Still unlike a lot of people that wrongly drill with oil , which will dull even cobalt drill bits, you drilled without oil. Not sure about beeswax i usually use a cutting fluid that is oiless myself. I hate sharpening or breaking drill bits. Thank you for this excellent video.

Right back at you. Hang in there Rats Arsed. When you get some experience with working with actual metal you will understand why. I just pointed out that I was very happy to see a video on the internet of someone who DIDN'T drill steel with oil. Maybe you should read the Machinery's Handbook before commenting again. Thank you.
