I was asked to make an ulu style blade on an herb chopper, and since then, I've been selling these, hand over fist. A pretty simple project for us beginners, and a pretty good seller at the craft shows.

Think you were talking about Torbjörn Ahman with the little handle trick.

Just a key point. The Ulu is not an “herb chopper”. It’s a multipurpose knife that is for slicing, skinning, etc. it’s a fantastic knife

Nice work! I am starting off in blacksmithing. I've made a few decent things, but this is pure awesomeness. Keep up the amazing work.

For those who do not have the benefit of a bandsaw or just don't have the patience for using a hacksaw. I have made similar cuts just using my cold chisel and hardy tools before. I did several knives making equal cuts in from each side and forged the tang out and yes, trailer springs are great for knife making.

Great work! Some craftsmen just fold the handle over and the crease is not pleasing. You put a lot of care into your work and it shows.

I just found and subscribed to your channel. It's nice to see someone having fun at smithing. I'll be a forever viewer. Just one comment, though -- you should charge A LOT more for your chopper. That's a fine piece of work, worth at least three times more than you're charging. Don't short-change yourself! Forrest

pull back those sweater sleeves, good way to get pulled into a machine and hurting yourself. learned that at commercial fishing, never have anything loose fitting while working with machinery.

Thanks, Al. I did get your voice mail. I've been off with the family for a few days, so I will get the forge fired up when I get back, and get your order done up. I don't have much in front of yours, so shouldn't be more than a couple of days. I'll get with you when its ready. Thanks, again, and I'll speak with you soon.

Hi Al. Your chopper is ready to go, but I accidentally deleted you voice mail so wasn't sure how to get ahold of you. I'm so swamped right now that I never seem to have time to answer my phone, so the best way to get ahold of me is to probably private message me through facebook facebook.com/HoJforge/ or send me an email to gotcha.covered.up.north@gmail.com and that way I can get your address and figure out payment and all that fun stuff.

Potential improvement: at 18:14 you start explaining how you come in from the side, and how you kind of rock the blade in two different dimensions with these exaggerated not-realistic-at-all gestures we all use when trying to explain motions. You then proceed to apply this technique. But at that point you fast-forward through the process, so we don't see the more subtle and nuanced movements you make in reality. It would've been nice if you'd at least held off on speeding up the video until after showing what it looked like in reality.

Nice job. What stops it from rusting
@HoJForge
@HoJForge 6 лет назад
For any carbon steel blade, the care is going to be similar. Wash it by hand and dry it, right after use. Then put a light coating of oil on it. For kitchen blades, I think olive oil works best, but if it gets frequent use, then regular vegetable oil should be fine.
@johnjude2685

I did mine with lard as a iron cooking skillet Oven 350 for 15 minutes and smear the lard and 30 minutes again And care as above

Second that: Torbjörn Åhman does this as well. As evidenced in his herb chopper video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HcTcFbxtiLU.html I guess many smiths do this, and it'll be hard to figure out who came up with the idea in the first place. That is, if it's not simply a modern variation of something smiths through the ages have been doing with chisels. Not that it matters.
@SheikYerbuty
@SheikYerbuty 7 лет назад
Do you treat them with oil? helps with rust.
@HoJForge
@HoJForge 7 лет назад
For anything that I intend to be used in the Kitchen, i coat them with olive oil. For all my other blades, I generally use 3 in 1 oil, but will try other things from time to time... haven't found anything that really works any better than good ol' 3 in 1 so that's usually what I go with...

Do you still make and sell the Ulu style urb chopper?
@drason69
@drason69 7 лет назад
What kind of price tag do you put on these? I need to get some "change makers" because all my bigger stuff is hard to sell in these parts. To many welders around here claiming to be blacksmiths
@HoJForge
@HoJForge 7 лет назад
For my regular herb choppers, depending on the show, I will mark them between $35 and $40. These Ulu ones take me a little bit longer, so I generally mark them around $45, and I never really have to much of a problem selling either one.

So, I'm curious why you didn't opt for a heavier hammer to begin with? Not being cheeky, just trying to figure out why people are working so hard when heavy hammers abound?
