Braces for the back axle, and supports for the front bolster, in the Borax Water Wagon undercarriage. These braces stabilize the front and rear axles to maintain their positions when carrying 1200 gallons of water that waters the 20 mules as they traversed the Mojave Desert in the 1880s.

A Michelangelo of steel, you see a three dimensional shape in space, your trusty tape directs the degree of contortion, and you create the ferrous item to fit the concept; but being a perfectionist, - don't rest until again the tape confirms your efforts. Absolute mastery, and a joy to watch.

I am astounded by your ability to improvise! I have some small experience at forging metal and understand the scope of this project. That said, I am in awe of your genius ways of overcoming problems. In the end your parts are almost indistinguishable from original pieces made from less technologically advanced times! The scope of the amount of work involved in making so many pieces from wood and metal parts by one highly diversely skilled individual is a testament to the types of people upon whose shoulders you stand!

I know what you mean when you say 'effortlessly', but somehow it doesn't seem to be quite the word, given the immense effort involved. But I agree with the sentiment - quite remarkable skills, and so sure-footed.

What I love the most about these videos aside from the skill, craftsmanship in both carpentry and metalwork that goes into building these coaches is the minimal amount of BS chat in these great video documentaries. The philosophy of a picture tells a thousand words has been well applied here. Great work, keep it up keeping history alive.

The Engineering is amazing. Mixing iron and wood at this point in engineering evolution is a wonder. Wood for its inexpensive weight and minimal iron for its rigidity. Today this would be all welded 3" - 6" square pipe and Timken bearings. At this time, I think Timken was still a decade away. I'm still amazed at your 3D perception. Those were extremely complex curves. Bravo Sir!

@@LTVoyager youre right and wrong. The woodworking is coach building, the fore runner to the automobile industry. The metalworking is forging, part of mechanical engineering and held by mechanical fasteners, components of mechanical engineering. The components have been engineered not crafted although the craftsman has brought it together. They are not different they are all part of the whole and to study both "crafts" you would study engineering not craftsmanship. Craftsmanship is skill in a particular craft. This is a number of different crafts brought together and has been engineered.
@LTVoyager

gbwildlife uk Copying an existing design is not engineering, sorry. Engineering is applying science and mathematics and engineering principles and heuristics to create something new. I do not believe that is what is being done here. This work is fantastic craftsmanship, but it is not engineering.

I was curious how much weight this wagon carried and thought others might be too. so I copied this from Wikipedia. The tank held 1,200-U.S.-gallons approx. 10,000 lbs of water to supply the mules with water, There were water barrels on the wagons for the teamster and the swamper. Water supplies were refilled at springs along the way, as it was not possible to carry enough water for the entire 160 mile, 10 day trip. The tank water was used at dry camps and water stops. An efficient system of dispersing feed and water along the road was put in use. Teams outbound from Mojave, pulling empty wagons, hauled their own feed and supplies, which were dropped off at successive camps as the outfit traveled. The supplies would be on hand to use when a loaded wagon came back the other way, and no payload space was wasted. There was one stretch of road where a 500-gallon wagon was added to take water to a dry camp for the team that would be coming from the opposite direction. The arriving team would use the water and take the empty tank back to the spring on their haul the next day, ready for re-filling and staging by the next outbound outfit.

There is a guy in Scandinavia, that is a blacksmith. So, I mentioned on his recent post, since he was explaining, instead of working, about forge welding, that there is a guy making a reproduction of the "20 Mule Team" setup, and he did forge welding for the metalwork, with the product the original wagons hauled. Borax to make the borax wagons. Another great one, David! steve
