I hated my dad. When I got saved and read in 1st John that if we say we love God but hate our brother, we are a liar and the truth is not in us. So, I started "acting" in love towards my dad. I specifically remember one evening I made him a cup of coffee and before bringing it to him I prayed: "Jesus, I hate my dad. But you love him. So, would you show him your love through this cup of coffee?" Three years I acted in love towards him all the while feeling hate. One morning I woke up, the hate was gone, and my heart was filled with love. We had 15 years together after that, and the last week of his life he accepted Jesus as his Savior. My father never repented of his abuse. The words "I'm sorry" never came from his lips. In fact, I never said the words, "I forgive you." But clearly, in my heart I had.

When it comes to forgiveness there's always going to be certain situations where the person (s) you forgive will hate you & try & destroy you even if they are related or within your circle of people. I am related to a certain slanderous, jezabele spirted person that I avoid like the plague, every time I would offer an olive branch I would get bit & bitterly regret it. I know Jesus didn't hang out with the vermin that was out to ridicule & destroy him! There are a few certain people in my life that I must avoid because of their intentions towards me.

I'm confused because I forgive people I don't hold grudges I don't look back I don't throw it in their faces but if you're only adding strife and negativity I will not expose myself to that constantly.... I don't see how sacrificing my sanity and my peace at the expense of somebody else's misery is unforgiveness... misery loves company and I refuse to ring its doorbell. As much as I love this man of God I cannot help but think Psalms 1:1

YEP. My dad went to prison for CSA (though he was physically A-sive, too) and my mother could give Joan Crawford a run for her money. I forgave my dad MUCH easier than I could/can my mother. (I'm working on it...) It is NOT SAFE to have either of them around my children. God gives us the gift of discernment. I'm using it.

I played this like 2 times to hear it again. He was spot on about the guilt for the victims. Man, I cried so much fighting with my flesh and trying to argue with God and wanting a reason not to do it. Finally got to being scared of exposing myself to danger and distrust that God will cover me and that was enough to look at myself and my promise to God. Pastor Bachman has convicted me so much lately. I finally understood why I had to forgive. Anything for God.

A great message on forgiveness. Only by God's grace can we see how sinful we are. And yet He died for us, demonstrating His love upon His people, setting the example of love and forgiveness. He loved His enemies, while they were His enemies, so that the riches of His grace may be known. Jesus said you will know my disciples by the love that they have. Jesus admonishes us to not just love those that love us back, for even the unbelievers do that. Therefore love your enemies and do good to those who persecute you. This truly is impossible from ourselves. We can only do it, by looking at ourselves as Christ's enemies and the love and forgiveness that He extended to us. We will only love through forgiveness as much as we realize how much we've been loved through His forgiveness.

Thank you for sharing the story of Joseph to everyone. I have struggled with forgiveness, forgiving others who has stolen from me, hurt me, took advantage of me, and struggled most forgiving my self for doing the same as revenge and for keeping the anger for so long. When I decided becoming a true Christian, not just by name, forgiveness became very meaningful for me. And the story of Joseph is one that I always look up to besides Jesus paying for all our sins. Rejection is probably one of the most painful emotion and forgiveness is probably one of the hardest thing to do. If God can forgive us for our countless sins, who are we to not forgive others? There are others scriptures in the bible that mentions about forgiveness, another one is the the Parable of an unforgiving servant in Matthew 18. Forgiving can be hard indeed, but if you do not forgive as Pastor Voodie mentioned, it is your greatest sin then. This is one of one I am focusing in life today, sharing my testimony on how I have overcome the thought of revenge and choosing to forgive. Yes it is hard, but once you learn to let go, you take the weight of burden off you, and then comes peace.

This message was tailored for me. I just want to say thank you. I have been practicing unforgiveness for so long, I couldn’t even tell it was stagnating me. I claim to forgive, and pay bills and all for the people that hurt me, but deep in my heart of hearts, I still carry the bitterness. Today I choose to let it all go and hand over to God. I choose to allow the Holy Spirit to take over my grudging heart. I choose to let go of all the unjust treatment and let God purify my heart. I ask for healing and a renewed spirit. I pray for God to send healing to all who have been hurt by my actions and pray that God will give them comfort, in the blessed name of our Lord Jesus Christ. ❤️

Perhaps stop paying bills, because of your bitterness they are using you and you cannot confront them to take care of themselves. Forgive your parents too that is where bitterness starts from. Even more start forgiving for small things in your life, meaning say it directly.

God also blessed me with reconciliation with my mum before her death. She had never given me a compliment or even liked me, yet at the end she did, and she changed completely toward me. Praise my Heavenly Father who made that possible, I understood how much I am truly loved by my Father and that He truly cares about me that He gave me closure on what had always been a rocky relationship. The most difficult part for me is when we forgive for hurts and offenses, but the person never changes. Not only do they hurt and offend but they just keep doing it and are never sorry. In fact, they don't even seem to be aware of their sin because nobody can tell them without there being a blow up. And when they are told, they deny and excuse and justify and counter attack and accuse and make war over it. Vodie says you can forgive but be cautious. How can you be cautious if that involves some degree of distance? In other words, it's the juxtaposition between saying "they are forgiven" and "I don't want to be around them much because they keep hurting me." But if you don't want to be around them, people say you're unforgiving! I don't understand that. I want to forgive, even to forget, but why must I continually put myself in danger again and again and again? How do you be "cautious" without the caution looking like unforgiveness? How do you be cautious when the person uses your caution against you? "See, you won't do X, you're not being forgiving!" It's manipulation pure and simple. It's like they're are saying "haha, you have to be forgiving, so I can do what I want to you and don't even have to be sorry about it! And if you try to stay away from me, I'll accuse you of refusing forgiveness and reconciliation." And if course THEY can say they forgive their victims, and want reconciliation with their victims, if course they do, it means nothing to them. If course they want you back in their life so they can beat you up some more. But if you try to rub away to then you are accused of unforgiveness and sin. Vodie says there is some difference between reconciliation and forgiveness, but I've been taught they are the same. How can you have one without the other? You can't say you're reconciled properly if there hasn't been forgiveness, and what would it mean to forgive someone if there isn't reconciliation? Because that would just mean you're punishing them by distancing or withholding in some way right? We can't say "you are forgiven, BUT, you have to change now and be different". That isn't forgiveness, that's a contract. "You can be forgiven as long as you change!" So then, what can you do to forgive and reconcile when the other person just keeps harming you? We're being told you can't change them or tell them what to do because that's "forgiveness on my terms". But we can't stay away from them because that's punishing them and isn't forgiveness. It's really frustrating, like are we not allowed to have some standards about how we want to be treated? To tell them they are wrong? Because telling them they are wrong is just asking for a fight, which makes it look like we're not forgiving because we're demanding they change, etc etc. It's very toxic and manipulative and there is no way out because we're being told "no no you can't just leave them because that's not reconciliation, that's punishment!" Gaa! Litterally, all we want to do is stay away from a nasty personality, why is that wrong?

The narrow way....I have never learned at least not from any preacher either I encounter online or in real life what forgiveness is. All I learnt is revenge with curses during my life as a young Christian neither did I learn from a veteran preacher who loves to threaten though he did not know the truth. I did not learn it from my shepherds, church leaders or pastors or classmates either believers or not. I do not see any differences between believers or non and no matter what denomination they are in. I learnt it from the Bible, God's words and one or 2 books I read and in real life from my own parents and some siblings. Also, never have I heard forgiveness being preached even once in the churches I attended. Now I learn the difference between restoration n forgiveness. Sometimes, we just forgive n do not want to expose certain people in our life for certain reasons. Some cases are easy, others are not.

@41:36 mark when Mr Baucham says “... that’s why there is an emphasis on the 70x7”: There is a reason why Jesus said that to Peter. It is a reference to the verse in Daniel: “ Seventy sevens are decreed about your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and to anoint a most holy place.” ‭‭Daniel‬ ‭9:24‬ ‭ESV‬‬ At the end of the Seventy sevens or 490 years (of which 483 of the years have been completed). The L-RD will our an end to transgressions as stated in the Daniel passage stated above.. which will be the end of the age (when we finish those last seven years) So essentially what Jesus was saying to Peter is “ I want you to forgive until the end of the age when I will end all transgressions (which is Seventy sevens that Daniel prophesied)” The Word of G-D is so BEAUTIFUL and complete with every word written and spoken!

I am confused by the iPAD anology. If I forgive them for breaking it, yet accept a replacement from them if they're financially able, how is that unforgiveness. It's like someone damaging my vehicle and denying their offer to fix it by cash, or through their insurance. I can forgive and still expect/receive accountability and responsibility. However this is an excellent message. I just got a little confused.

Luke 17:3 clearly states, ". . and If he repents, forgive him..." That verse is not a "myth" it's biblical. A lot of ministers avoid this part of the verse that requires the person to repent (Luke 17:4 KJV) "And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him."From this verse we see, God requires the person to repent before forgiveness for a reason. Some people are too proud to repent, but they're supposed to do it, and then we forgive. Both sides have a responsibility according to this scripture.

I also believe counseling is very important to the injured person. In addition, what happens when the other person does not want restoration? I guess and long as we know we have forgiven then, that's all we can do. I would love some feedback. God Blessings.

Forgiveness wasn’t freely offered by Joseph and it kills me when I hear his or any story of the Bible told as a morality tale for the sake of making a confused point. God’s Word says that Joseph treated his brothers harshly and put Simeon in jail for a year when they first appeared before him in Egypt. He told his other brothers they would starve if they didn’t bring Benjamin back with them the next time, as they would get no more grain. He spoke harshly to them, calling them spies. It wasn’t until his brothers returned after a year and showed remorse and repentance that Joseph’s heart was moved to reveal himself and seek reconciliation. It would have been a horrible sin to not offer forgiveness to repentant persons and Joseph’s forgiveness was not cheap. He tested his brothers to see if they had a change of heart by the way they treated Benjamin in his presence. Once Joseph saw this change, he stood ready to forgive and reconcile. Sometimes God separates His people from persons due to others unrepentant evil. My family is not saved and shows no signs of repentance and salvation; on the other hand, they are slanderers and continue in their evil ways. I pray for their salvation since repentance is of The Lord but I stay away from them all. It hurt massively to be cut off from them but God says to remove yourself from the evildoer and based on what my family practices, I can’t be around them. However, if they ever call or communicate repentance and Godly sorrow for their sins, I stand ready to forgive. Here, we see a confusion between love, which we are to provide to all people and practice freely by praying for the ungodly and forgiveness which even God gives only to the repentant.

Yeah, not to quibble too much, but whatever reasonable measures I need to take to get my mother to stop calling me at odd hours of the night and 1. explaining in Vivid detail how she wants to dismember my dad, disembowel my dad, and otherwise violate my dad's person, or blowing up my phone 95 times in one day {which I believe is enough to get a no contact order from the authorities}, I'm just going to go ahead and block her number for a while. Eventually I have to get some sleep

There are some people who think that we are to forgive people arbitrarily without the offenders taking accountability for the wrongful actions. Nowhere does the Bible suggest that. Sometimes, they quote Jesus saying, "Father forgive them, they don't know what they do." This doesn't mean that the Father forgave them. To prove my point, in Revelation 1:7, it says, ""Look, he is coming with the clouds," and "every eye will see him, even those who pierced him"; and all peoples on earth "will mourn because of him." So shall it be! Amen." This is an indication that the ones who pierced Him, will be subjected to eternal judgment, and they were not forgiven. God does not expect us to forgive without another person taking accountability. Without accountability, there is no true forgiveness. Before forgiveness can be actualized, it must be met with accountability. Without accountability, the wound is still opened; the wound has not been mended, and it cannot heal. Without accountability, the sin is still remembered, the offense still hurt, and the person can’t forget. For the wound to heal and the sin to be forgotten, one must take accountability. “I sorry. I am wrong for wronging you, please forgive me.” Only then, will the person begin to heal. Forgiveness is not one-sided; forgiveness must be two-sided. One must be “wanting” to be forgiven, and the other one must be “willing” to forgive. We should not forgive without the offender taking accountability for his or her wrong. We rob the brother or sister of the opportunity to confess, change, and to repent. This is so redemptive when someone takes accountability. This also gives the offender to get right with the person and to his God. The Bible says, "If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them” (Luke 17:3). Accountability stops the offender from sinning against himself and from offending someone else. Accountability gives the offender the opportunity to make a wrong, right. It brings about spiritual accountability through confession; it brings about change through correction, and it brings about reconciliation through repentance. This is God’s model of forgiveness. David says, "acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD, and you forgave the iniquity of my sin” (Psalms 32:5). In this scripture, we should see the collaboration of the one “wanting” to be forgiving, in this case: David, and the one who is “willing” to forgive, in this case the Lord. Thus, there is repentance and reconciliation of both parties, and most of all, there is a change life. Even God does not forgive us with taking accountability for our wrongdoing. The Bible says, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). Here is another one. "If my people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land" (2 Chronicles 7:13). In this above passage, God will not forgive them, if they don't "turn from their wicked ways." .

How do you deal with persistent manipulative people who take advantage of your kindness and even rub it in your face that you are a christian so you should forgive then they go ahead and purposely offend you over and over.

I think we really need to evaluate forgiveness. There is a lot of emotional blackmail by the church dealing with the hurt and pain. There is a fine line between forgiveness and self respect.
@toddcote4904

There are 2 principals that need discernment for direction. 1) Turn the other cheek, bless those that persecute you, and pray for those that abuse you. However, self defense is not sinful, nor is getting the authorities involved if it warrants it. 2) If you see a brother in sin, go to them and confront them. If they will not hear you, take 1 or 2 others with you. If they still won't listen tell the church. Lastly, if they still won't repent, then let them remain in their sin. They aren't saved and need to hear the gospel.

Simple. Forgiving someone doesn't require you to keep them in your life if they're toxic to you. The teaching here is that you should seek reconciliation with people as much as possible. If it isn't possible for any number of reasons, then it's important that you forgive them. While reconciliation requires forgiveness, forgiveness doesn't require reconciliation.

@@TruthAlwaysReigns80 thank you. As always, turn to the Lord and His Word. It is there that you will always find your answers, whether you like them or not. In this case, logic and reason dictate that we only risk our lives and livelihoods for two instances: for the sake of the Lord and to come to the defense of self and others (to include neighbor, self, community, and nation). Neither of these includes keeping toxic people on our lives. I've certainly removed quite a few detrimental people from my life, and I know that I wasn't being unforgiving in the process. I just needed to recognize that these were people who were there to hinder my continuing walk with the Lord, and take the steps necessary to either bring them in line with the Lord, or let them continue on their own walk. I'm glad you found what I said edifying. May the Lord bless you through the study of His Word, and through your walk with Him. Have a blessed night.
