Not really forgotten, but on YT because of the
(timpani solo at the) final note. It differs from many other performances, but they follow the original score. Brass Band Soli Deo Gloria, Leeuwarden (Netherlands) (1983)

Brilliant test piece, I mind when I played rep cornet with lochgelly brass band way back in the 1980s this was one of the test pieces for the mine workers championships at blackpool brings me back such happy memories and also connotations both by Edward Gregson I love brass music , been away from it since 1990 s but I still listen to blackdyke, grimethorpe ect I still get emotional when I hear plantagenents and connotations as I was just a young boy when i was in the brass movement, I still love it

Played this great Test Piece for number of years back in very early Eighties with Boldon Colliery Brass Band on Bass Trombone, some of the best memories of my Life. Mr Gregson also a Northeast Man himself, amazing composer, thanks for the music and memories.

Oh Lordy, how many memories this brings back! I first encountered Plantagenets aged 14 - about 35 years ago - and feeling my way down to Eb Bass from Tenor Horn. It was an unofficial "audition" to what was then a 2nd section band. I was the ONLY bass player there, the others were on holiday/working late/ill. After warm-up hymns I thought: 'Oh, not too bad' then came "Right let's turn to the test piece...". Cutting to the end of this memory, some audacious use of 4th valve to fill in for BB parts (especially at the opening) seemed to secure my place in the band. "Well done lad!" said the conductor, and I thought he was just being friendly.... We went on to gain 2nd prize that year. Wish I was back there now!!!!

Nice story! About the same age. Also precious memories that didn't fade out (not in the slightest way). Heard this brass-band at the National Championships in 1983. Thought it was the most beautiful brass-sound of a brass-band in total I had heard. Hearing this sound again, 34 years later, still think it is a very nice sound! Thanks for putting it up here.

I was "Borrowed" from Frederick Gent Comp to play single Bb Bass for Shirland playing this piece. You didn't see many single Bb or Eb bass players but I was way to small to pick up a BBb in 1981 or 1982. It was my first experience of Brass Banding outside school.

great Marten, was dit niet op de NBK o.l.v. Dirk Annema. Samen met Blackfrairs van Eric Cundell winnaars in the Dutch cham.section 1983# with a real hattrick in 84 en 85 cond.

Another piece I loved to play in my playing days. I played solo euphonium as did my dear dad and granddad. My late brother Terry played baritone. The years go by too quickly, but thanks to you at forgotten brass I can live those times again, if only for a short while. Thanks forgotten brass.

Still one of the best BB pieces written. Appreciate the recording engineer! Good depth in the benches. Sometimes a bit orchestral compared to the ol' days but I don't want to be that guy saying it. It was a pleasure to spend time with Edward at the most recent NABBA where we joked about the new 'commas' inserted in Connotations wondering which recording was circulating that started all that.

This was one of the first pieces to come out of the folder when I joined a Championship Section band in the late 80s, having previously played principal in a village band. The 3rd cornet part terrified me!

Looking forward to hearing the two polar ends of the section...it'll either be brilliant with everyone hitting everything or it'll just be a mess...very good piece though, and a good test for 2nd section! Freckleton Band

10:14 and 10:54..both the cornet and horn bit is bang on the beat whereas the score says tha its off beat, therefore this is played wrong on this recording...
