It really is amazing how much good stuff comes from composers like Holst that people simply don’t know because the usual concert venues simply won’t go beyond scratching the surface. Holst had good reason to resent the singular popularity of the Planets, excellent as that work may be, when you consider what else he wrote. I can think of literally dozens of pieces by Holst alone that could be candidates for videos like this, but in any case your coverage and exposure of whom I believe to be England’s true greatest composer is very much appreciated.

This is one of my favorite pieces by Holst. In fact, when I first got into composition, the Japanese Suite was the first orchestral work I ever reduced, and I learned a lot from it. It was actually great for a first-time reduction exercise since it's not all that complex, but rich with beauty nonetheless. The lyrical solo bassoon melody in the opening makes me melt every time.

Great analysis of one of Holst's many gems! It's amazing how minimalist the "Dance under the cherry tree" movement is.

The Ceremonial Dance has always evoked to me some sort of festival where they bring out taiko drums.

Holst composed and scored this wonderful music when he had scored 6 of The Planets, Mercury was finished after the Japanese suite and it sounds so like Holst! This 25th of May is the 90th anniversary of the death of Gustav Holst and the 21st September is 150th birthday so listen to his other stuff! I love this guys music and his best music mate was Vaughan williams!

Thanks for the introduction to this piece and for the link to the score video, which I played straight after. Your analysis helped a lot in pointing out what to listen for - as always with Holst, there is a lot going on!!

Very unfortunate that work of great value goes unappreciated many times... This can be said of both this composition and your channel as well! One of the rare channels to provide such great content.
