LANGUAGE WARNING A couple of bad words in this one. Aside from that a very interesting chat we had with legendary AC/DC bassist Mark Evans about his life in music and his former band mates to celebrate what would have been Bon Scott's 68th Birthday.

This man is a total champ, as this interview illustrates. He works at Downtown Music in Sydney, a very cool guitar shop going strong since 1957. He did a set up on my bass a month ago. That was special for me. Rock on Mark Evans!

It was a good book I read it recently. He was very honest and admitted that he was an immature guy at that point in his life. His missing rehearsals and his scrapes with Angus did him in but I also believe that they did need a bass player who could sing as well. And Cliff can sing his ass off. The thing I like about Mark is that unlike Dave Evans he's not trying to hang on desperately to his time with AC/DC.

Thomas i agree! Dave sounds more like the singer from Quiet Riot Kevin DeBrow.(r.i.p). He sings one way and still dresses like he doesn’t belong, as seen when Brian went down. Now I just want the new album, and a tour with Brian to finish it all up. Wonder when they’ll release the album with all this covid stuff going on.

Marks strength as a bass player is his ability to sit on a groove and keep it tight. Something that lots of players think they can do but can't. Playing along with Phil is like training yourself to keep perfect time by playing bass lines along with a metronome except Phil keeps perfect time with a unique swing feel to it. Back in the late 70's the one thing all the pommie music critics could agree upon was that AC/DC had a rock solid rhythm section of Malcolm Phil and Mark that worked like a flawless and precise well oiled machine behind Bon and Angus. Mark deserves credit for his part in the constant touring slog that is the AC/DC legacy of making it to the big time by doing it the hard way.

After listening to this guy, it really makes you wonder (NOT slamming Cliff Williams) BUT "what" was it about Cliff that Angus and Malcolm hired him AND kept him around for the duration OF AC/DC? It he THAT talented or is it that he keeps his mouth shut is pliable and only speaks when spoken to? Angus: "Hey Cliffy, were keepin' you on for another album... how does fifty grand a year sound"? Cliff: "Sounds GREAT Angus... whatever you think is fair."
@jrmarrero96
@jrmarrero96 8 лет назад
You just answered your own question when you posted: "It he THAT talented or is it that he keeps his mouth shut is pliable and only speaks when spoken to?" Its both reasons at the end of the day. Mark Evans admitted in his autobiography he kept butting heads with Angus, getting into physical altercations with him and so on.

Much has been said about who was the heart and soul of ACDC but the fact remains Malcolm Young was a great rhythm guitarist but he was also the main person to sack fellow band members, producers etc .... totally ruthless. He admitted that Bon Scot was the main band member to write catchy lyrics but even that statement was forgotten after Bon's death and Angus, Malcolm deprived Bon's family of royalties regarding Bon's involvement writing most of the songs for Back In Black and gave writer credits to Brian Johnson five months after Bon's death when they recorded that album in 1980. Also coincidental that no ACDC album post Back In Black ever reached top of the charts like Back In Black. Jesse Fink's 2017 book about Bon Scot's involvement in writing the lyrics to most songs on BACK IN BLACK should finally set the record straight...
