Former All Blacks prop Keith Murdoch was a boy in a big man's body 

Manager Todd was told by the Home Unions that unless Murdoch was sent packing serious consideration would be given to canning the rest of the tour.

@@user-te3jc3sl7r Clearly the NZRU were concerned about a backlash. In the book "Murdoch - The All Black Who Never Returned", Ron Palenski provides the transcript of a phone call between NZ Rugby Union chairman Jack Sullivan and the Four Home Unions chief John Tallent the night before the announcement that Murdoch was going home. Their talk was taken down by hand by another NZRU member so that they'd have a record of what was said. The Home Nations stance, as spelled out in the call, was that if Murdoch didn't go, either the rest of the tour would be abandoned or else Todd as manager must be replaced. Palenski quotes the two men on that from the phone transcript. Palenski also quotes Joe Karam as saying Todd told him in a private conversation he was "virtually ordered to send Keith home or the tour would be called off". Todd and Karam were friends, as members of the Marist-St Pat's club. Some years after Todd's death, his widow Pat made public a private tape recording in which he told her: "... on three or four occasions he's (Murdoch) been in trouble and ... John Tallent ... he virtually demanded that I send him home." Pat Todd said she made the recording public in 1979 because "Ernie had the right to have the truth about the affair known".

He was a thug, pure and simple. Kicking a man in the arse, while the player was on the ground, is the action of an ill disciplined thug.
