Arsenal did not do enough to keep Ashley Cole. I appreciate David Dean’s admission. Wenger will not admit to something like that. Arsenal lost its identity when the team moved out of highbury.
It makes perfect sense for the Premier League to setup their own Netflix style streaming service. Once their deals are up, they should 100% start their own service. Imagine paying £20 or something and being able to watch any Premier League game you want.. That HAS to be the future of football in this country. The prices you have to pay for Sky, BT, Amazon just to watch some football is absolutely ridiculous. It’s no wonder everyone resorts to streaming. Edit: When I say £20 I mean a monthly subscription fee of £20, meaning you can watch as many Premier League games you like for that amount. Not £20 per a one off game.
@@johnmitchell2269 Sky and BT have contracts not rights... which can be run down by Premier League to choose what they wanna do next. I think 2025 is the end of the current contract with Premier league tv rights.
@@RT-zk7yr why do you choose that figure? You are thinking of pay per view on things like boxing - think wider - it wouldn’t be pay per view it would be a subscription - a flat fee to watch as many games as you want both live or after the event - think how many people pay for Sky just for the Prem games - meanwhile the other coverage on Sky just gets worse and worse - if I was charged £30 a month for Prem footie I would drop Sky tomorrow
@@_7.8.6 Fergie and Gill being great has nothing to do with Dean and Wenger's legacy. There are better people than you in this world, should your life be ignored and diminished?
We need David Dein back in some sort of capacity him Edu and Arteta would be magnificent. David Dein did so much for the Premier league people don't even know the input he had with the changing from 22 teams 42 matches a season to 20 matches and 38 matches a season hes a legend in his own right for Arsenal and the Premier league.
He's too old now at 79. Which is sad as I love David Dein. He wasn't your average chairman, this is a man who would celebrate with fans, always had time to talk to them and was a father figure to the players. He also said to Wenger when he joined, you're in charge not me. You tell me what player you want and I will buy them. Best man we have ever had at Arsenal. When Hill-Wood died, the media all credited him for Arsenal's success. That was out of order as he did nothing but harm it by sacking Dein. Dein was the brain behind our success, not Hill-Wood.
i used to work at Anfield when I was a student, working on the door to Executive Lounge basically, quality job.. Anyway, I met David Dein and he was an absolute gentleman, friendly and down to earth and after the match he asked me where the nearest bus stop was outside the stadium so that he could get back into town to get the train back to London from Lime St. Very humble and down to earth guy and that has stuck with me for ~15 years.
I think he's the best LB . Period! Some say Carlos, but as much as i loved Carlos i compare him a it to TAA. Not the best at defense. Ashley Cole on the other hand was first and foremost a defender and damn what a good one he was.
Blimey Talksport, when are you going to sort out the volume level on the intro/outro .. if you forget to turn down at the end it's burst eardrums everytime! Apart from that, great content as always guys, thanks.
I dont understand. This conversation is a contradiction within itself. On one hand its implied that its a outrage that foreign money has come in to improve Chelsea and Man City, but then its a sense of pride that the premier league is heads and shoulders above every other league in the world (from a financial and coverage level). Which one is it?
If it wasn't for Chelsea and Man City's rise, considering their rise coincided with Arsenal's decline, Arsenal won the title in 2004, finished 2nd in 2005 but then it would have been United winning every year until 2013 when Fergie retired
@@samueldavids3704 I agree with you, I'm backing your point up, that's the point. People moan about chelsea and city yet they have some pride that the PL is financially the best in the world
@@thecyclingbean6806 We will see buddy I'm a pessimistic tbf we'll probably finish 5th again. I know you hate them but I dream of a day where Arsenal, United & Liverpool are on top at the same time the holy trinity of English football these oil club's make me sick 😫
Can someone please explain why they aren't live on RU-vid in the morning till afternoon now?????? Must of asked about 500 times now could of replied talksport or anyone
Absolutely spot on comment, he sat down and refused to play or be subbed the following season as well didn't he? And that was berrgkamps no none of it made sense lol
@@kennywilkinson913 I don’t think galas refused to play but he was never captain material and he didn’t carry himself that way on the pitch or represent the club properly. Tantrums are not befit of captains. I always muse that had Kolo Toure been given the arm band (or just kept Ashley Cole) we might’ve convinced his baby brother to come to arsenal and do what he did for us what he did for Manchester City.
huge respect to David Dein for saying sorry to Ashley Cole. Cole have go on to win major honors and became one of the legendary left back in the world.. but the fact is he was raised with the arsenal DNA. I hope one day he can visit and at least talk to the academy players and share his experiences. dun stay at Chelsea they have no history. sold lukaku as a teenager and buy him back at 100M and then loan him out again.. I am waiting for them to buy KDB for 150M from mancity when he is in his 30s and then loan him back to Belgium.
Fair play to Dein for his explanation. Although am a born Arsenal supporter through and through, I understand why Ashley left, although I’ve booed him ever since. Ashley’s was more to do with promises that Dein made him. Ashley wanted more money but accepted Dein’s offer of 60k a week. Only for his agent to call two weeks later to say Dein had charged his mind and now offering 55k!!
Cole leaving really hurt at the time but I've mellowed on it now and acknowledge that he was great for Arsenal. I wish things had turned out differently
@@Wonderkid44 nah, RvP only had one good season left in him and we were too reliant on him anyway. As soon as he left, other players stepped up. Cole hurt more because he was a local boy who came up through the ranks.
And for years him and Wenger said nothing when the young black, British player they attempted to manipulate and underpay was getting vilified for being greedy (shades of Raheem Sterling when he left Liverpool. Weird how no one criticizes Harry Kane, Ronaldo or John Terry and Rooney when they all demanded tranfers to Premier League rivals). 'Cashley' as the racist British public nicknamed him quietly got on with his job winning double the trophies with Chelsea than Arsenal have in all the years since he left. A lesson in disasterclass ownership by Wenger and Dein.
@@solshields Many players get stick for many reasons and believe it or not it doesn't have to be race related. Free yourself from your own bigotry before you point the finger at others.
@@solshields It was never about the race and the name "Cashley" has no racial slur tone .Van Persie , Nasri , Fabregas ..etc all received the same treatment when they moved to direct rivals and got booed and called snakes The only one who received some racist comments was probably Adebayore
I'm sure Ashley would be much happier in hindsight that he left Arsenal seeing how they went down & Chelsea rose to being one of the top clubs in Europe. If I was Cole I would be glad just for that, leaving the extra bucks aside.
Forget at the Emirates, him & the other four deserve something in Trafalgar square, after the royals, it's the country's biggest export & without it there's be a massive drop in income
Im an evertonian baaed in Liverpool and I dont follow arsenal closely but when arsenal planned their new stadium I'm sure Dein said the funding of it wouldn't effect money available for transfers. Now he's saying it was a concern. I wonder now if efc are lying to our fans now. Our stadium is coincidentally arriving just as we are cutting our wage bill dramatically and having two summers of net gain transfers
@@antpatto7524 our wage bill was barely half that of city, lfc,Utd and Chelsea and 100m a year behind arsenal. It was 180m a year when Rafa come in to start cutting it. It’s been slashed again this summer. Lfc,Utd and city are always around £320m to £350m. Our highest transfer is about 45m. The top five clubs have paid more than that for keepers and have made at least five signings well in excess of £50m. It’s a total myth we’ve overspent. We’ve spent like we are the seventh biggest club in the prem. in terms of revenue we easily are. In terms of history we are number one. In terms of trophies we are fourth.
Not quite sure of the politics behind the scenes at the club which led to his departure but always thought David Dein should still be employed in some capacity there.
They might not have done enough to keep but having secret meetings with Chelsea while still on contract with Arsenal was totally disrespectful. He is still Cashley for that reason.
Losing Ashley Cole, who was clearly the best left back in the world at the time, for 5k a week was a disaster. To make it worse we only got 5 million quid plus Gallas for Cole. Gallas was a real bad egg in our dressing room.
Good to see Simon on mute and learning from an old school visionary. Mr Dean I stopped supporting when they appointed an amateur manager, but in truth... AFC were no longer serious after the outstanding service you produced. Great man!
An amateur manager who genuinely loves the club and is bring back the values it holds which Dein himself tried to install and keep in the club Dein wasn't and isn't the be all end all of Arsenal. Deserves all the praise for what he done but let's not act like he was the one who made Arsenal who they are
@King Darwin Didn't you hear him? He sold his shares to Usmanov who was Kroenke's biggest rival at the time. How does that translate to him being a big part in Kroenke takeover?
Simon sound very bitter against Dein in his book, saying that Dein can even sell him a player with half his leg already broken and have Simon overpaid their wages. That's why players loved Dein, he really took care of them. There are certainly begrudging respect from Simon Jordan on Dein ability.
@King Darwin I heard that, but he did not end up selling to Kroenke but his rival. How can you then accuse him of being part of those that facilitated Kroenke takeover? If anything, he stalled the Kroenke complete takeover when he sold his shares to Usmanov.
@@scott2222 Bringibg back what values? Being happy with top 6? What about on the pitch... He's winging it as a manager and will never win anything significant.
The European Super League is impossible without English clubs, it won’t generate anywhere near the revenue without Premier League elite and the Premier League elite is in a very very very good position as it is, they don’t need it. Long story short, ESL doesn’t happen!
Newcastle would replace Arsenal in that Top 6 anyway so it's nothing Arsenal supporters need to worry about...... just continue to represent Kent - Arsenal's birthplace - by never winning a Champ League 🤣🤣🤣
Hmm, it wouldn´t be the same without the English teams, but a strictly continental Super League would definitely rival, and at some point outgrow, the PL in terms of global appeal. But only if it has relegation and a fair distribution of tv revenue.
@@robertdegroot8302 an exclusive league of lets say maximum 10 teams that wouldn’t involve English teams would never rival the Premier League ever. First of all, only Italian and Spanish teams are interested in this idea because they’re broke, French and German teams wouldn’t join in anyway, second of all, with relegation or not, a Super League without prem clubs wouldn’t generate enough revenue!
Without Dein no Premier League. Gave us wenger and the modern coaches. The Arsenal made the League and dragged you with them. Carried The League until Roman and Sheiks. Never forget. Since Herbert Chapman we lead.
@@mikem8211 you must be blind.. the gent said Arsenal carried the league NOT United & arsenal. Arsenal last won the league when the Motorola RAZR v1 was the thing to have. United have won 13 premier League titles arsenal have won 3...
Let me put everyone in this comment section to rest. Here is what happened: (1) the premier league began in 1992. (2) Manchester United dominated the league. It was a farmers league. (3) along that domination you had one upset loss where Blackburn won it in 1995. (4) Newcastle started to show talent in order to challenge United’s dominance, but that spark went out after a few seasons. (5) Arsenal mustered up a rivalry to United in the late 90s to improve the league’s competitiveness and won the league. Everyone knew that this uprise couldn’t continue forever because United were too well established at this point. (6) at this point, the premier league is not number one in the world. The better leagues are Serie A and la liga. (7) In comes Roman abramovich with his wealth. United are no longer guaranteed to win every season. The wealth of Chelsea brings in all the big stars and managers from around the world. It’s no longer just about United. (8) the league improves because of oil money (mostly) and the premier league catapults to the top. Learn your history kids.
True story I met John Terry going into the Arsenal training ground and he said he was singing for Arsenal .. the week before abramovic took over Chelsea !
@@Pwnziillaaaa Well he was at Chelsea from the age of 14, and I know he was a regular in the first team for several years before he came but let's be honest, I'm sure some chelsea fans thought Abramovich coming would mean the end of Terry's time at the club and that they would buy a more accomplished centre back cause Terry hadn't really achieved much at that point
This for all the deluded Arsenal fans calling the guy 'Cashly Cole' here is your former chairman admitting that they mugged him off and it was the club's fault he left
I like how David days it needs to be kept fair, but the whole point of the super league was to give the big clubs their fair share, moreso to the eu clubs who are now at such a disadvantage die to the money. Bayern are the only well run club, but even they'll soon have trouble when players choose Norwich over them. I'm not saying I sorted it just to be clear, I just don't think it write gets the hate it deserves when you look at the reasoning. I off course still want merit to determine the outcome, but financial doing needs to stop to, by empires & billionaires as well as providing from the poor
The premier league has made very average players extremely greedy as Thier talent doesn't make them Worthy of the amount of money that players are being paid. There has to be a more sensible constructive way of players wages because eventually the bubble will burst.
Yeah ,but where is this huge investment into the Premier League going . 1.5 billion spent in the last transfer window. .... the REST of Europe £250 mill . Sporting Lisbon buy players in the 2.5 mill to 8 mill bracket.... and thump Spurs , who had 3 hundred million worth , sitting on the bench . What is going on?
Simon's Netflix of football isn't Simons idea. Ted Turner had a model of owning content and distribution back in the 90's. Its a model that's been working great for lots of people. Stop this Simon's idea crap.
@@danielberry4765 My point is no one gives af about American sports & what WCW Ted did it went over your head we don't saw swoosh in the UK you absolute 100% certified tool
The Premier League was always going to be good for the hardy perennials in football. It took all the money that went down the pyramid and through the league. The strong got stronger and the weak got weaker. Even when relegated you get payments so you are not competing fairly with your neighbours. The mistake the league made was not to insist all clubs have a modern stadiums with a 30,000 capacity and if you don't have it you don't get in.
Finally, people accepting arsenal were in the wrong. Ashley Cole was the best LB of that generation and should have been one of the top earners! Arsenal fans calling him CASHley Cole speaks volumes of the delusion that brought arsenal near 20 years without a prem or champions league 😅
If in a Queens reign Anti Semitism - Sternly dealt with Racism,Islamophobia - not Equally Sternly dealt with,Prevalent On Queens passing - Blacks and Browns must Mourn, show Respect?😂
We started this money game in the Prem & have got the worst most tightest yanks while Chelsea (prior to boley), City & Newcastle are owned by oil barons with unlimited wealth. Barca & Madrid would never allow this we just sat back & let it happen ffs
Wow what a sorry spectacle this is . All this grovelling to this supercilious super smooth rich self publicist with the purest of pure hearts that ever existed . Yes Dein loved Arsenal so much that he sold his 15% stake in the club to the highest bidder . I guess that's what is called true love eh ? And let's not forget how arrogant and duplicitous Arsenal and their fans were under Dein and Wenger . Somehow Dein ,Wenger and Arsenal as a whole reminds me of Tony Blair and New Labour : devils masqueradeing as Angels.
I'd love to know what Mr. Dein thinks of Man City cheating FFP and not being punished by the PL or FA. They are after all still benefiting from that cheating.
David Dein is an honourable man, who catapulted Arsenal to great success, but why is he suddenly and simultaneously appearing on multiple football platforms in the UK - Talksport, Sky Sports, etc? What is going on here? Is he being showcased for a knighthood?
He released his autobiography this month. There was a big release event that ex Arsenal legends attended. I guess this is a way for him to drum up support and interest in him (well overdue and deserved in my opinion).
@@iykeharrison9161 okay then, what is hypocritical is that Arsenal aren't funded by oil money yet they moan that other clubs are yet they want it as well. For example I'm sure Newcastle fans kept moaning about city's spending and owners yet they started giving it large when they got taken over
