The song that "Filter" reminds me most of is Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle." It has that late-90s sound. The songs share the same chord structure (I'd love to see someone try a mash-up). I actually believe that Filter INTENTIONALLY references Genie in a Bottle-with the line "I could be your Genie, How 'bout Aladdin?"-like, PDogg and Hitman Bang knew what they were doing by putting these two songs in conversation with each other. Of course, the subject matter is very similar too, with the cliche'd female pop lyrics that basically say: "I can be whatever you want me to be, wink, wink." But by having a male artist sing it, it becomes subversive, and Jimin's lyrics are more self-aware than Christina's, hinting that there's something effed up and maybe self-harming about about the way culture sexually objectifies pop artists, even if the pop artists start to crave that objectification. The lyrics to the bridge are flat-out creepy. Also, Jimin's vocal style-the flipping between low vocal fry and high breathy lilting-totally recalls female pop stars from the late 90s and early 2000s, Britney in particular. Imagine Jimin singing a cover of Toxic-his voice is made for songs like that. Male Kpop artists do sometimes cover songs like that, but they usually make their performances super CAMP. What I love about Filter is that it's not camp...it's incorporation of styles, sounds and subjects typically assigned to female artists is 100% authentic.

I totally hear the Latin early 2000s vibe. The chorus makes me think of Ricky Martin “Livin La Vida Loca” and the guitar reminds me of that era of “Latin explosion” in pop of that time. I really LOVE the harmonies in this song. Thanks for breaking them down. I really love when Jimin does this on his songs. I recommend his solo song “Alone” from his album FACE, he does a lot of harmonies in his high and low range. It’s so pleasing to the ears.
