Former NSSF MD Chandi Jamwa talks about how his life has changed

He went to jail as a senior accountant but returned as a financial consultant. Former NSSF Managing Director David Chandi Jamwa, who recently secured a presidential pardon, has been about his January pardon by the president after he was sentenced to 12 years in prison six years ago. Jamwa, a certified accountant and consultant, says a lot has changed in his social life. He admits that he has been daunted by the spine-chilling experience of being behind bars but remains stronger as he rekindles his career and social life. Sudhir Byaruhanga brings us part one of this two-part conversation.

Seeing a lot of controversial comments. The Mr.Jamwa i recall while working at NSSF did a lot of good structural changes for the Fund in a short tym including an increment from 6% to 14% return on member savings. In fact he made the work of his predecessors a lot easier by his first 100 days in office. The 1st meeting to introduce him as the guy in-charge..all countrywide staffs gathered at workers hse so i cldnt tell who was who. There was a guy lifting tables/arranging chairs for us. I was surprised when thy introduced the new MD, to realize the guy who was lifting tables that day, was our new CEO Mr. Jamwa! His first lines were NSSF oyeeee.. Rugby oyeeee..! He really had passion for his work. God bless whatever next move you make

My respects, Mr Jamwa. You made your contribution to NSSF, tumbled and fell and served term. To fall is human, to get up and get going again is the true Mark of resilience, learning from past mistakes. I have no doubt you will be up and running in no time, OB. As you thank the President for his pardon, you should be even be more grateful to the Almighty for giving you second lease on life. Perhaps a time to abandon a fast life of sleaze, Casinos, ...and pay Uganda back by doing things which help take the country forward, uplift the common man, save tax payers money and truly make the forgiving Creator smile. @@mubirulawrence8100 You are right by the way. But look at all that stealing has done directly. May be the NSSF money would have been used to invest in a kidney hospital, or in a children cancer hospital. that means all those children who died were indirectly affected by. Secondly, we have to send a strong message to the people who are stealing the money to never steal again. We can not give up we have to fight corruption.

From this interview, I can deduce this man’s brilliance was a threat to some crooks in that organization. They connived and cooked up a scheme against him and got rid of him. A mere 17 months and he was gone.

I no longer judge any one for doing what they are doing, back ground matters. As many of us we put behind bars for doing nothing, I am sure he might have been draged into a moving train. May the almighty soften your heart and forgive every one around you . Thanks NTV.

Smart guy, no doubt but The point about private sector utility management doesn't quite address the issue. A private entity running a utility getting investment capital means it must give strong returns, those returns will come from pricing the utility to extract that value. In essence part of the nice returns NSSF gives is linked to the high cost of power that the country endures. We need to nationalise and do it rationally to run infrastructure. Bureaucracy is not a preserve of government, anyone who's worked in a large private company knows there bureaucracy too. Just look at Umeme itself.
