It’s no longer the current record, but I’ll definitely look back fondly on this day as a proud moment.

Thanks so much! I my experience, firing extremely slowly eliminates all explosion problems, including pots with air bubbles. Explosions aren't caused by air, they are caused by water (in the clay and water vapor in the air) turning to steam above 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Steam rushes out of the clay, causing an explosion. The same principle powers steam engines. Think about it- water in the clay escapes just fine with slow firings, so why wouldn't water in an air bubble in the clay also escape just fine? Me too. I look at those pots and I’m not really impressed. They’re sloppy and of a size and shape only good for one thing: holding kitchen utensils. They’re too big to be used for drinking vessels and too ugly to be used as flower vases.

Guinness world records has tons of requirements that they only shared privately with me after I applied to break the record. One of which was that I could’ve use an electric wheel, like the two current record holders who broke my record, after they attempted it on electric wheels. There are lots of things I could do to make it faster, but I’m happy that I broke it in my own way, On a kick wheel for the first time in history. And even though I won’t be in the GWR book, i’m still proud to hang the previous record on my wall, and will look back on this moment fondly :-)

@@cherricopottery Hi Joel Thanks for your reply ,first of all that was impressive ,good for you ! Your record should stand for a kick wheel, its crazy that they don't see it that way . They should get an experienced potter to set the criteria for the challenge and why any of it should be private makes no sense .It would be like in the Olympics 100 meters only the athletes know what the rules of the race are ..daft ! Yep you should by rights be in the GWR book .

350lbs. Kneaded it, then weighted it into 2lb balls, then hauled it to a public venue 6 miles from my studio. Took me about 5 hours, the same day before setting the record.

#1 and #159 both sold for over $500 each, back in 2016. We donated a portion of the sale to charity, I think a Wisconsin Children’s’ hospital if I remember correctly.

Ouch, man! Guinness World Records required those exact types of pots to be made- planters made to specific sizes and weight. Sorry you don't like them but we needed to fulfill the requirements in order to set a new world record. Plus, all of the planters turned out in a cool, loose style and I fired the finished ceramics with funky colors. Seemed well worth the 350 pounds of clay to me! But you're right, most quality pots should be made more slowly haha

Beauty is in the eye if the beholder. Some will find it beautiful, some will not. But these vessels where for the world record. Have you seen his other work? There's a whole ton of people that think it's fabulous. No matter how beautiful something is. Someone on the planet isn't going to necessarily care for it. And that's okay our great diversity is part of what makes us beautiful.
