Great video. I grew up on a ranch and I still hear my dad's words that "a man isn't much of a man without a knife" . Runs thru my head every time I see people need a knife and not have one.

I may have zoned out, but I didn’t hear you guys talk at all about steel types. In all the classes I’ve taught I’ve always recommended D2 steel for bushcraft. For tactical I recommended a slightly softer steel that will hold the edge a bit better for good cutting. Brand names don’t always add up to quality though.

I love this. Hes carrying a Benchmade, I still carry an old Emerson Benchmade (from before Emerson and Benchmade parted ways) that I got for a survival course in Tok Alaska, ran my an old Vietnam era Green Beret, named, Chrish Janowski. Hes passed now, but what a good dude. He used to mail me Porcupine quills after taking his course and insisted I not pay him for them or his time. I use Esee now, I've got a couple Isula's, a 3, 4, 5 and the 6 too... didn't do the Junglas, I like Gransfors Bruks if I'm working like that. I like the "Bowie" mention. My Grandma on my dads side always said he was my kin. I told them that when I went to The Alamo, and apparently they have people who research living relatives. They looked me up and asked me to sign their book of living relatives. So Grams story was confirmed.

Good to see Kevin doing some knife videos on the channel. I trained Sayoc for 14 years so I'm aware that he is an instructor in the system and has a wealth of knowledge on the topic of blades. Too many knife videos on YT from enthusiasts, phonies, martial arts geeks, etc. just trying to make cool content. I want to see more content from well trained and educated blade specialists. Content that can be sourced and where attribution is important. That's what I see here. I appreciate this video and I hope to see more like it from you guys. Second coment. Had to look up the MKC Field Survival Knife. May I compliment you on a superb design. Bonus it is in Magnacut. For me the stand out features are it is slim, not big, and for cutting. Something that gives few excuses not to carry, so far more likely to be on you when you "really" need a knife. (In addition to the SAK in your pocket.) Nice one.

I would have touched on the blade steels and what you should have for a survival knife, bushcraft knife, an EDC knife, and a tactical knife. People who don’t have any knowledge about the blade steels and the qualities that they possess and don’t possess, often end up with a cheap knife with a low quality steel or even a steel that is so cheap that they don’t even name the steel, often referring to it as a “surgical stainless steel,” and if it’s a carbon steel they don’t say what kind of carbon steel and definitely don’t list the Rockwell hardness, or HRC. Some of those survival or tactical knives have a tough steel but have sacrificed the blade hardness, which is what gives it a higher edge retention, in order to make it so tough that it can bend without breaking but will be dull after one use and require multiple sharpenings throughout the day. It’s always a sacrifice of hardness for toughness or toughness for hardness and then if you want corrosion resistance you can forget toughness in most cases. An all around good blade steel such as Magnacut will give you excellent corrosion resistance and hardness, while also retaining enough toughness that many knife makers are using it in their survival knives. And Essee a few others have done the same with s35vn for the steel in some of their knives. The only thing with the harder steels is that you need to know how to properly sharpen and hone them, which is much easier to do with a basic carbon steel like 1095. You can sharpen that with nearly anything, although having basic knife sharpening skills and tools is still important. You can just get by with a cheap stone from the hardware store or even a smooth enough river rock.

My wife heard the accident and told me I ran out an was first on scene and the mini van was t boned at the intersection and rolled down the hill they were an older couple and the husband was crawling out of the drivers side window and yelling please help my wife so i busted the back window out and crawled in but she was in and out of consciousness and stuck in the seat belt. I didn’t want to cut her out I didn’t know if she had a neck injury and she was a bigger lady so I waited in there with her until the police and fire got there.

The title says survival, so to me that would be a Skrama. Military then a Peltenon M95, a better Glock. Folder of your choice, from a Benchmade, Spyderco, Chris Reeve, or even an Opinel. Leatherman Charge TTi is my choice. Pocket it has to be a SAK. Truck tool then what ever sharpened crowbar brick you like. Most interestingly from this interview how light weight and compact most of the choices are. Quite sensibly pointy "get off me" has a place in this gentleman's armoury. SOG Sealpup, doesn't keep sharp for long, but importantly hard to break; not heavy. A better PX purchase. Most believe being a Jim Bowie, Davie Crockett, and Robin Hood is a birth right. Well, its not, and being that good takes training, sweat, and some grit.

@muskett4108
@muskett4108 Месяц назад
@@blakefrancisboggs7526 Now that the Peltenon are made by the same people as the Skramas, same steel too, then they are better for it. Same as the Terava range, but more pointy. The real gem is the M23, a pocket pointy unzipper. In truth all the range ought to be 20% cheaper, but then that is marketing for you. Peltenons or Teravas, though for outright work knives they will pay their way 100%. I have a few too many knives, but some do work for their living. Have fun, stay safe.
@blakefrancisboggs7526
@blakefrancisboggs7526 Месяц назад
@@muskett4108 ive seen the m23, for a small knife it actually has a decently sized handle. I was weighing between a terava and a peltonen, but I liked the pointyness of the peltonen. Terava is more bushcraft. Also the peltonen really looks very nicely finished, they really took care to make a handsome knife.
@muskett4108
@muskett4108 Месяц назад
@@blakefrancisboggs7526 Though I have prepared game with the Teravas, as you say they are a bit too Bushcraft rounded. Something a bit more pointy are the Peltenons. I carry a Skrama 240 quite a lot so the M23 does the small stuff. Just easier to wash than a folder, though I invariable have one of those too. Heck, I used to do it all with a Chris Reeve Project II 7" and a penknife. So I quite like the length on M95, which I have on my military belt kit. I just like the grip, that they are easy to keep mean sharp, and not too expensive so replaceable. Double heck, even lend to someone, and if returned with deep edge damage can be fixed.. Enjoy.
