Today we take you behind the scenes with the all-electric Pebble Flow. The semi-autonomous, solar powered RV that begins deliveries later this year.
We get an inside look at some of the features, tech and specs of the brainchild of former Apple and Tesla executives who banded together to create an electric RV that blends todays tech and features in EVs into a recreational vehicle.

Interesting. I wonder if the windows and walls are properly insulated? Having travelled a lot in our current commercially built camper van and having built my own long ago, I have learned that the number one factor for comfort and convenience is good insulation. Poorly insulated walls and single pane windows will guarantee that your living space is usually too hot or too cold, not to mention noisy... so I hope these developers, who seem to be good engineers, have thought of that.

Looks like the rear will hit the ground every time you start an incline. 25 feet just seems too long for a single axle - would be better if it had dual axle or was shorter.
@edgarh252

Yea kind of crazy that’s it single axle especially since it’s advertised for people who can’t even hook up a trailer, i wouldn’t tow anything less than a tandem because even if one tires flat you could keep going for a while.

Hi Kim. You’ve been hands on with both the Lightship L1 and the Pebble Flow. Wondering if you can weigh in on something. I have a reservation on both. I’ve been told recently by execs at Lightship that they plan to put the charge port for the L1 at the front of the RV, in the tongue box. The charge port for the Pebble Flow is in the back of the RV. Charging the travel trailer while traveling will be of critical importance since I’ll be towing it with my Cybertruck, so I would be aiming to charge at Tesla superchargers. I believe there is a major design flaw in the L1 when it comes to charging on the road. If I pull up to a supercharger, I need to back my Cybertruck into a stall, meaning I need to drop the L1 in order to do so. Once I drop it, it won’t move until I reconnect it. With the charge port in the front, that would mean it would be impossible to charge the L1 at a supercharger, unless there is a pull through stall (low likelihood) or I take up almost all the spaces by parking parallel to all the chargers (which is not an option for me as I am a long time Tesla driver and this would be a BS move). The Pebble solves this by either (1) backing the trailer into the spot, plugging it in, disconnecting the truck, and then pulling the truck into it’s own spot; or (2) using the magic hitch to direct it to the charging spot. Do you think I’m missing something on the L1?

I don't see any indication that a Model X cannot tow the Pebble Flow that has 2 motors.
@kenmcclow8963
@kenmcclow8963 8 месяцев назад
@@scottbreseke716legally the Model X has a tow rating of 5,000 pounds. I have no doubt it could physically tow it though. Rivian R1S has a 7700 pound tow rating for about the same price. This new kind of self propelled trailer kind of eliminates cooling and braking issues that go into tow ratings, but since the base model doesn’t have the motors, the 6500 pound limit is still there. Although there is the consideration that if you are using the trailer and hit a string of cool, cloudy days and deplete the battery, then it will still drag 6500 pounds even with the motors until you can get to a charging station. It would be cool if they had a regen charging feature where you could tow it at low speed for a couple miles and recharge the battery.

AC Future has something too. This is a brand new electric RV start up that’s making the worlds first electric transformer house. This is a 20 foot small camper motorhome but when you’re out of campsite it expands to 29 feet long and the rear folds out 8 feet to make a bedroom, and then the kitchen wall slides out to expand the kitchen and create a shower in the bathroom. and then the wall that houses the sofa when driving extends out 8 feet to make a full size, living room and dining room with four person dining room table a physical prototype, will get unveiled in May

Great. This will encourage a bunch of people with no idea how to pull a trailer to not even bother learning. If you are too unskilled to back up to the hitch, you have no business trailering. Same with backing into the camping spot.

As someone who's interested in living in the Pebble Flow or Lightship fulltime, a MUST-HAVE feature for me is if it's 4 season capable (how well is it insulated?) like Oliver Travel Trailers or Northern Lite truck campers. Also, maintenance/repairability. How easy is it to get at the electronics/battery for repairs or replacement?

Exactly! The median house price in America in 2024 is $360,000. A lot of people who live in a tiny apartment and can’t compete with REITs to buy a starter home are going to buy these to live on the road. Or put in on cheap land outside the city instead of building a comparable house. I love it!

Some small new thing since they unveiled this but I'm still not a fan. This is not so RV based on my research on van/RV a year ago. The design feels like a portable office with huge shower because RV/van life involves a lot outdoor life/hobbies which this Pebble design restricts. The huge integrated battery and solar is commendable though-no RV/Van has yet to come up with that. Based on the price, they are targeting the Airstream buyer. I'm no expert but the Airstream still looks superior over this.

Can it charge a Tesla? So in theory unlimited range and free charging for life. You can charge at home from the RV to the car. Can it replace solar on your roof and supply power to the home during or even not during emergency?
@whitlockbr

Not perfect yet. It needs about 10kw of solar and a 1 or 2 kw wind turbine in order to charge the towing vehicle and the trailer while camping:)

Adding a wind turbine would reduce range not increase it if deployed while travelling. Due to the inefficiency of the turbine.

It's pretty cool! Dunno which will prove the most popular, however: the Pebble Flow or the Lightship…? Are you gonna invest in one of these RVs, Kim? 45 kW doesn’t sound like a whole lot I mean yes it’s gonna be better than pulling a deadweight trailer as far as your range but it’s not gonna give you that much more as it has less than your EV. That’s gonna be towing it anyway.

There are tons of hunters who claim to be conservationists. Are they “virtue signaling” because they say they care about the environment/ecology? They drive massive RVs and huge trucks with camper trailers. Is that “wretched excess” too? Or is it only wretched excess or virtue signaling when it’s electric because you associate that with people you don’t like?

great concept. I love everything about except 1 thing: mileage of up to 200 miles is prohibitive for most RV-ers trying to get from point A to point B. This works for someone living in Los Angeles trying to get to the mountains maybe but not great for those of us that need to travel more than 300 miles. Do you think that will change in the future?
