Thailand's former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will be indicted on charges of insulting the monarchy, the country’s attorney-general has said.
The controversial political leader, who returned to Thailand last year after 15 years in exile, is being charged over an interview he gave to a Korean newspaper nine years ago.
In that interview he had accused the king’s top advisory body, the privy council, of helping engineer the 2014 military coup which deposed an administration led by his sister Yingluck.
He is the most high-profile figure to face charges under Thailand's notorious lese majeste law, which has been used extensively against political dissidents.

Whenever you have a monarchy saying you can’t ‘insult’ it, you know you’re living in a tyranny, devoid of _real_ free-speech. No one on this planet is above criticism. It’s only those who feel they are untouchable (eg. through power attained via random accidents of birth) who can insist on this nonsense. If someone feels the monarchy _(any_ monarchy) is a pile of crap, then they should be free to say this. No one or nothing on this Earth should be above criticism.

The UK has a constitutional monarchy. The best form of governance in my opinion. But, indicted for insulting the monarchy? Seems incredibly harsh. This would never happen in the UK though. People are free to criticise it if they want.

With my respect to Thailand monarch abiding by the laws of Thailand, I know I am not in position to judge or evaluate this current situation about the indictment against the former pm, but as far as the laws of insulting the monarch concerned to be fairly adaptable to everyone within the territory, I guess that the chynese couple who let their daughter pee in the center of monarch's palace should be indicted for the same charge. To implement an indiscriminative laws evenly applying to all, whether the accused is native or alien, it should be transacted immediately.
