@@ZlewikkTV I am honestly surprised you even have a word for it haha. We have geographical features named after them (E.G. I used to swim at Lake Iroquois every day as a kid) so we say it alot. One thing we can agree on is that you pronounce English words a thousand times better than most Americans would say your Polish words! I've been watching for years and I still spelled Zlewikk wrong hahaha

Both pronunciations are equally correct but I think you're right that "k(w)oy" is most common. The people themselves are mostly indifferent because Haudenosaunee (Hoe-dinno-Show-nee) is their preferred name as that has always been their endonym. But that's not what's written in on the map in EU so you can pronounce Iroquois however you read it and nobody will mind.

@@Lunar0Strain There is no question about which is more common in the northeast. We have buildings, streets, mountains, lakes, and many more things named Iroquois, and never once in 43 years have I heard a Northeastern native english and/or french speaker pronounce any of them kwah. Thousands of times over decades from who-knows-how-many people I've heard this word, and always it's koy. Statistically, this can't be due to chance. I'll let you decide what makes a pronunciation "correct." It isn't a simple matter, which I can confidently say having extensively studied metalinguistics at one of the finest philosophy programs on the planet. But it wasn't until experts on the internet told me otherwise that I found out that people who don't actually use the word in everyday conversation may pronounce it differently than those who do.

@@dougdupont6134 In Ontario "kwah" is prevalent, but I understand "k(w)oy" is prevalent in the US. I would guess this is because Canadians relate it to the modern pronunciation of "Quebecois" which they are familiar with regardless of their french proficiency, while Americans read it as an English speaker would, or maybe retain some historic french pronunciation. But it really doesn't matter since nobody is personally attached to this word. Similar to regional pronunciations of caramel or pecan, it could be interesting to note, but neither pronunciation is more correct.
