Formula E Cars - What Are The Differences?

Season 2 of Formula E saw the regulations opened up so that each team could develop its own motor, inverter and transmission. Remarkably, given that each team had the same task, the solutions are dramatically different. There are cars on the grid running everything from two motors and one gear to one motor with five gears, and virtually everything in between. Find out the differences between each team's drivetrain in this informative video that shows the technology underpinning Formula E's competing electric racing cars.

I like the freedom to experiment with different solutions.

It's so refreshing to see this level of engineering freedom in the sport. FE is certainly on the right track when it comes to making the racing interesting in that regard. It'll be interesting to see how everything keeps on developing as the cars eventually will get more powerful and quicker, and maybe sound better as well. I don't think we should pretend as if sound isn't important. It's a key element to make the racing experience more visceral. But I think electrical motors can sound good in a very different way compared to an ICE, more similar to a jet engine. And I hope it doesn't go down the current path on show in F1 with extremely complex and sensitive aerodynamics not geared for facilitating overtaking at all. That's a recipe for a frustrating borefest.

When was the last time we saw a manual gear stick on a single seater?

Right? I actually think that's really cool. I love watching in car shots of classic formula cars with the h patterns.

The last Formula One car using a manual gear shift was the Forti FG01 in '95. But the previous year (1994), every other teams already had semi-automatic transmissions, with even Williams experimenting a CVT gearbox !

This was very interesting! I do hope Formula E continues to give the teams more and more freedom throughout the years to come (though it seems that they've become a little hesitant to do just that because of cost worries :/)

how gearbox work ? Does it necessary to have a gear box on a electric race car ?
@drunksanta1427
@drunksanta1427 7 лет назад
electric cars dont "need" a gearbox, neither do petrol powered ones, but it just increases the top speed ~ double the gearing ratio means double the speed but half the torque and you have a little bit of time where there is no power to the wheels at all
@Mladjasmilic
@Mladjasmilic 8 лет назад
2 motors driving same shaft?! What is the point, when same thing could be done with one bigger motor, and weight could be save by not having double parts like casing and bearings. Only way to make this solution logical is to make 2 rear motors where each motor drives it's own wheel, like electric SLS and Rimac Concept One has.
@Alridx
@Alridx 8 лет назад
+Mladen Milić Probably a mixture of weight and the power limit of 28 kWh meant a bigger motor was not efficient
@Neojhun
@Neojhun 7 лет назад
Electric motor coupling is quite common in racing EV. Adding more Staters and Armatures on the same shaft allows you to add total power more efficiently that multiple motors on seperate drivetrain and wheels.
@tomatolord4219

Two smaller motors more efficient in creating torque than 1 large motor.

hi, can you explain why they use an AC motor instead of a DC motor?
@Felipejardim95
@Felipejardim95 8 лет назад
+Bravadi Malangjoedo thanks!
@Mladjasmilic
@Mladjasmilic 8 лет назад
+Felipe jardim AC is easier to control , has no commutator which makes sparks and therefore more efficient. Also, it makes much smoother power delivery, and having at least 3 phase motor would make it have no pulsation of power. That is like having inline 6 in term of balance and power delivery. AC motor has less parts, rotor is single metal cage and it can rev very high. Downside it that inverter/motor controler is much more comlicated than DC motor, as it must produce pure sine wave from DC from battery, It also must match frequency (speed) of motor in order to control it in most efficient way with least power loses.

This is actually way cooler than f1. Formula 1 is full of dumb strict regulations and usually Mercedes and Ferrari are the only teams to have powerful engines to win the race.

If the Renault uses the Manual transmission Stick. Does it means they used the old Manual Transmission or they'll keep the ordinary Semi-auto transmission?

nobody has come with a brushless hub motor configuration why? it take less onboard space "more space for batteries", it makes the car have more grip, no need of transmission, brakes, and fluids makes it lighter

Wow. This looks like f1 in early days. Plenty of real innovation. A lot of competitive teams. Looks exciting. I'm still not down with the engine noise. Yet this want distract me from watching f-€.

exactly, you'd have ballast, but if you have ballast, you can put it wherever you want, improving weight distribution.

Wouldn't two engines allow torque vectoring?
@hpfunkman
@hpfunkman 8 лет назад
It's banned in FE
@Neojhun
@Neojhun 7 лет назад
Torque vectoring on works when motors are independantly effecting diferent wheels. In this case the two motors are couple together driving a diferential to the rear axel. It can not split diferent toqrue.

Neojhun Well said.

This is not yet allowed, but that would be very interesting. When talking about the future of Formula E, Lucas Di Grassi said he hoped to see free battery development and torque vectoring in the near future, for example for the Gen 3 cars.

When they have just one car,and regeneration,on the battery so it last till the end.then you see,30cars and Ferrari,BMW , lotus,Aston Martin,ford BRM,all the old teams of formula 1.,in formula e.,and brands hatch.hosting the forumla e world championship race, because formula 1 is too expensive
