that sunset view was a beautiful man! thanks for sharing. I just wonder though, how likely is it that it will flip during flight? I really want to try this someday. hopefully when I don't have to worry about the bills like when I become a millionaire.
I love your video's Steve!! You're the man bro!!!I'm still going through the checklist, man!! "Don't flip over......DAMN... fliped over!!" Hahahahaha!!! Classic Dude!!! You gotta show me how to do wing overs man!!!
The Aussie pilots are the ones not walking around in their harness. Looks like a great place to fly. I loved the biplane and the fort explanation and also that you showed your best and your other successes. 🙂
This is my next hobby. This vid was great bro, really enjoyed seeing the dos AND don’ts - refreshing to see a real life reflection of the sport, not just the glamour 👍🏻
I started at 57 three and a half years back. I live for it now and get a little edgy if I cant fly every couple of weeks. I have three gliders now slow wind, a higher wind and a sub-70 powered trike for when the wind doesn't cooperate. On a ridge like that you can fly for hours. wish I started earlier, glad I learned and hope I can keep going for many years (some still fly in their late 70s). 😎👍
fantastic vid. i watched it over a few times in a row. "Dont drop your phone whilst texting either. The phone wont survive the fall".Ha Ha Ha. Great fun. I should put Fort Funston on my bucket list, For sure.
Man, brings back the memories... I started back at Funston back in the mid 70's. The ridge still pretty much looks the same. We used to even launch from West Lake occasionally. That was a rush in a 20 mph wind. Stuff the bar to your knees for the first 10 seconds. Maybe someday make it on down there to get some time in.
Don't land in the water, don't even let just your toes get wet, very No Bueno! don't drop your phone while texting your buddies how great the flying is! don't buzz and turbulate the PGs by pulling out of a dive right in front of them! don't chase seagulls from below, they can "dirty" your glider! do play chase with off-leash dogs north of the observation deck!
Steve ... what a well made put together humble fun Funston video... definitely one of the best Hang-gliding videos I’ve seen .. I haven’t flown there for years .. I used to fly there with Dan Buchanan, actually that was the only time I flew there was with him... I have several friends that are always asking what it’s like .. I’ve just sent them all your video... Well done, thank you for your time effort and especially for showing the awkward moments we sometimes experience while working on our skills... also a big thanks to everyone in the film for showing the camaraderie we all share ... Top Notch !!!!!
That just looks too scary. Fun, but beyond my level of fun-to-scary. If I learned to hang glide I'd do it out in the mountains with no highways nearby and nice big landing areas!
Nice. I’m a paraglider pilot and plan on becoming bi-wingual at some point, I did fly down the coast from you in Pacifica once. Wonderful little ridge soaring site you have
Thank you for this beautiful video. I wish , one day i'll come over to Fort Funston, to ride this awesome spot. hanggliding forever , forever hanggliding.
Rewatched this fine video again today. What months of the year is it most (or best) flyable. And for those that have flown Torrey Pines as well, other than the different scenery, how does the flying compare ?
...Seven pilots wanted to fly to Japan, easily breaking the X-C distance and duration records. For my coastal flying, I start with straps tight, hands on basetube, with 3 crew (wings & keel; prefer not to have anyone in front of me or wing). Conservative flying is a must at the coastal sites I fly; they have roads and power lines barely 100 feet downwind...so I stay forward of the dune crests; no one top lands due to those obstacles and hazards.
Enjoyed that more than most vids cos of the mistakes, the bad landings, getting caught by a tail wind and ending up in the bushes even the flip over it shows more than anything the learning process the accidents that all of us have done at one time or other. The trouble with most pilots they are far to hard on themselves when they fuck up and we forget its supposed to be fun this vid reminded me of the fun cheers.
No. In shear conditions some pilots have crossed the Golden Gate Bridge, landed in Golden Gate Park and flown South past Devils Slide, but nothing close to getting to LA.
Wheee XD I visited Taiwan a few years back with my parents. One spot we visited was so damn windy that the beach down below would get blown up to cover the road a few meters deep during the summer and blown back down to the seaside during the winter. The day I went, a pair of eagles was playing right above us.
Great vid! Excellent music choices too.... Ft. Funston is on my bucket list for spots to fly. Maybe this summer. When is the best time of year to fly there?
