Lt. Gen. Harold “Hal” and Julia Moore were selected as the new Benning namesakes for their meaningful and lasting contributions to our Soldiers, the Army. Fort Moore will recognize Hal Moore's career as a decorated and highly regarded commander of the Vietnam War; and his wife, Julia Moore, equally distinguished as a leader of Army family programs who changed how the military cares for the widows of fallen Soldiers. Fort Moore will honor Vietnam veterans, Army Families and highlight the military spouse’s invaluable contribution to combat readiness.

I’ve been against the cancel culture and renaming of military bases in particular, but I can’t think of a more appropriate renaming than Fort Moore. Lieutenant General Hal Moore was a soldier among soldiers. We need more leaders like him in today’s Army.

I passed through Fort Benning during airborne school and Infantry OCS in 1970. General Moore and his wife mean a lot to us Vietnam veterans. I never thought I would live long enough to see a fellow Vietnam veteran and his wife so honored. This is in no way Wokism, it is a tribute to a man and his wife giving to the US Army and our country. I am 73 years old and a 30 year US Army retiree.

But it is wokeism. The communist/marxist Democratic left hate our American history and culture and they want to make it politically correct and to make everything fit their delusional utopia. It makes them feel better about themselves. You should check out the list of names of forts that are on the chopping block and see who is pushing for these changes.

I respect General Moore and his family a lot. I wish that the Congress had built a new base and named it after General Moore. That new base would teach all military schools and service that General Moore's service to our great Nation. That would have truly honored both him and his wife. But instead of doing that they put his name over Fort Benning. General Moore was stationed at Fort Benning and not Fort Moore. The civilian communities outside of these bases don't like the changes and they will always know the real names of the bases and generations to come will know the real names of these bases and see these replacement names as not the real name of these base. They will say that it is the fake cover up names and state the real name of the base near their towns outside of the base. You see the U.S. Arm Forces have always supported our troops. The names of those bases to G.I. Kids aren't about who they where named after. We saw it as our home place, our Home Town. It was just the name of our Home Towns. Those names are very heart felt to us. We hear those names and places and remember all who we grow up with back then. G.I. Kids didn't get to grow up in one place like most civilian kids do at one home town. Different parts of a G.I. Kid's growing up time periods are at different military bases both in the U.S. and over seas too. The name changes where done for political correctness and not really about honoring any one new. These actions taken dishonors General Moore and many others for it was a dishonorable way that people made these changes. It makes it less of a honor to the people they say they are honoring with their name changes of these bases. It was done to hurt or harm our Nation and citizens of The United States of America. Most of all G.I. Kids of the past and present.

So. Civil War reenactor, military historian, and Army veteran here. Now, I'm from Washington State. I reenact the Regular Army company that was stationed in my home town. By and large, I'm a Yankee through and through. I am **totally** against the effort to erase the Confederacy from the memory of the United States. There are issues and grievances that have still not been addressed 150 years later... grievances that effect all the states in all 4 corners of our nation. Having said all that, I can think of no finer soldier, officer, or human being to name a United States Army post after than Hal Moore. I've been lucky enough to listen to the General speak on several occasions and once had the privilege of shaking his hand. Mine is probably the last generation that wanted to grow up to be like John Wayne. What I should have wished for was to grow up to be like Hal Moore. To put an even finer point on it, by all accounts Henry Benning served his state honorably. But Hal Moore simply a better man, a better soldier and a better servant to his entire nation.

"to the victors goes the history...". However, there is two sides to every story, just because the other side doesn't want to hear it? Doesn't make it any less the truth.😏 Be leary of what you read and believe...🤔 Honestly, both sides won and, both sides lost. Yes, we took strides forward. However, we ended up right back where we started in many other aspects of American life and slaughtered 720,000 Americans in the process and wounded and maimed another 2.1 million in the process of a war that shouldn't have ever happened in the first place. Benning's name was chosen not to "glorify" him or the Confederacy but, as a measure of reconciliation, and as a measure of respect for an admirable adversary, as were ALL the Confederate names chosen. The names chosen for U.S. Military posts in the South, as those in the North and West(with relevancy), were chose for their relation to their native states. For example, Forts Lee, Pickett, A. P. Hill(who never owned a single slave, btw)are all in Virginia, Fort Hood in Texas, and Forts Benning, Wheeler, Gordon, Stewart... Georgia...etc. Benning is not only a native Georgian BUT... is in fact a native son of Columbus, which... last I checked? IS where Fort Benning IS... The Confederates are and were Americans, as much as those from the North. The very Confederates this country is being taught to despise and hate... could've taught their sons and their grandsons to despise and hate this country just as easily as those wish to do to them today BUT... they didn't... they taught them to have honor, to be respected, and to our nations adversaries? To be feared. The Confederates sons and grandsons... carried this nation through its toughest century to date... the 20th... they came together and fought the Great War, the Second World War, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam... and now their great-great-great grandsons are carrying the torch for those that came before... Oh and just as a little tid bit of information... since 1865... Southerners have bore the brunt of the defense of this nation... their participation standing at approximately 80%... the standing U.S. Military today... is manned by approximately 46% Southerners... thats nearly half of our military force, the rest of this nation makes up everything else. The 1/4 of our nation carrying the heaviest load... don't look down on the sons and daughters of those very Confederates... respect them.

It is BS that they named a federal post after an enemy of the nation, a confederate traitor.

Yeah, I didn’t want to change it from Fort Benning also but if this is better than some of the other options, as far as I was concerned

A very eloquent rebuttal from a Confederate (enemy) sympathizer.

@@Th3Nigma I can’t speak for anybody but myself to me it was more than a name but within that name over billions of soldiers have given their sweat, blood and tears. It was just something that was ingrained into the brotherhood. So it’s something similar to getting a tattoo of your mothers name just to find out that wasn’t her real name Fort Benning is a place/location in an 11Bravo timeline were he came as a boy and left as a man 🇺🇸

The name changes are about not honoring confederate traitors, if you look beyond your own selfishness.
