Fort Myers
Named the City of Palms (drive down McGregor Boulevard to see why), it’s easy to be in the center of it all in Fort Myers.
Downtown Fort Myers, also known as the River District, forms the core of the city. A U.S. military fort during both the Seminole Wars and Civil War, Fort Myers and the surrounding area are rich in fascinating history.
The indigenous Calusa once inhabited this area. Later, pioneers settled the pine flatwoods, and cattle drivers escorted their charges to ships docked at Punta Rassa. Thomas Edison and Henry Ford brought national attention to the city when they chose it as their winter getaway.
Today, Fort Myers bustles with historical and cultural attractions. Discover a range of shopping, featuring high-end outlets, antique shops, boutiques and outdoor malls. For dining, nightlife and live entertainment, explore the River District. Reserve time to enjoy a guided walking tour through the downtown streets.
The recently-opened Luminary Hotel & Co. pays tribute to the electric history of Fort Myers by tapping into the collective energy of a city supported by a cast of inventors and innovators. Check out any of the dining establishments at this large riverfront property, including its signature restaurant, the Silver King Ocean Brasserie, and the Beacon Social Drinkery rooftop lounge, which offers sweeping views of the Caloosahatchee River.
With kids in tow, head to the IMAG History & Science Center for an afternoon of activities and exploration. Budding historians, scientists and inventors will want to take a narrated tour of the Edison and Ford Winter Estates.
