Follow along on this solo adventure touring motorcycle trip from Fort Worth, Texas with a loop through Alaska and ultimately to Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories, Canada on the Arctic Ocean riding a 2017 Husqvarna 701 Enduro. The plan included as much gravel/dirt/forest road as possible. The total trip took 29 days. The total miles were 10,129 with nearly 3,000 of those miles being gravel/dirt/forest road. A few of the major dirt roads include; Forest Trunk Rd 40 in Alberta, The Denali Highway, Petersville Rd, Top of The World Highway, in Alaska, the Dempster Highway including the, newly opened for this year, additional 100 miles from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk, and the Campbell Highway in Yukon and Northwest Territories. Also traveled the length of the Cassiar Highway in British Columbia eventually passed through Jasper and Banff National Parks. Map link:

I took a trip from FL to CA and back on my 2003 Harley-Davidson. My dream now is to ride from Abilene TX to the Arctic Ocean. I loved watching your video. Good to see someone giving glory to God on a trip like this.

We made the trip to Alaska a matter of weeks before you were there. We had intentions of driving the Dempster to Tuk but decided not to at the last moment so your video at least lets me see what I missed (I don't regret not going). I had to laugh when you turned down the Campbell Hwy as we took that same route by VW station wagon, on the advice of a local that it was a good road. We drove this part on a Sunday and hit the construction zones while everyone was off and am amazed we made it through. My traveling companion Larry, who is my navigator and brother to the family we stayed with in Fairbanks, and I still talk about Ross River as well as that road. What a place! Thanks for the video and safe travels from Shedd, Oregon.

I recently purchased a F800GS to do my forest road and adventure trails. I always go exploring on my street bike on long excursions without planning. That part of my adventure riding will have to become more deliberate and planned. Sometimes I wonder what's your distance between mapped fuel stations. I can not wait until next year to begin my less than paved adventure riding.

Absolutely wonderful video! I am heading up to Alaska this year in early June. My question was how much of an ‘off-road’ bike is needed to make the trip? Looking at an Africa Twin (or TransAlp), but I also like the Kawasaki Versys or possibly Suzuki VStrom…?
@eddiehess6562
@eddiehess6562 8 месяцев назад
Not much of an "off-road" bike is needed at all unless it is wet when you do the Dempster or Denali highways. The Dempster was a mud fest for a day and a half for me. The Helena Lewis and Clark National Forest section in Montana was very rugged also. Easily bypassed. Equipped with the right tires, the Africa Twin, Transalp or Vstrom would be good choices. I chose the lighter bike because it is easier for me to pick up by myself when I fall down. Have a great trip.

Really enjoyed the video. If I may ask, what programs were you using for the GPS and how did you come up with all the dirt roads? My wife and I have been all up in Glacier and the West Coast on the bike. We have ridden a lot of miles in Utah and Colorado but I have never figured out a good nav program and how to get the dirt roads. We always end up using a map. Thanks in advance for any info. Again....Great ride!!!

Honestly, I spent a lot of time and used several resources to plan this trip. My primary navigational tool was GAIA GPS www.gaiagps.com/offroad/ I did most of my actual routing using this app. It easily switches map layers and includes every map source imaginable. One source that is particularly helpful is the national forest maps. I actually used the Open Source Street maps for most of my travels although it is easy to switch on the fly. The app will download maps along a route so once I had my route figured out I would do that with multiple map layers. I was offline 90% of the time. When I was planning I would often spend hours zooming in on Google Maps or Google Earth to determine if a road was paved or not and try to determine if it were gated or private. I also use www.gpsvisualizer.com/ to test my .gpx files in various map layers. Well in advance of the trip I sent request via various websites to each state or Canadian province and requested the free highway map that each highway department offered. Paper maps are very helpful for big picture planning. I also purchase the current version of Milepost www.themilepost.com/. It is a indispensable resource for any Alaskan/Yukon/Northwest Territories trip. It was especially useful for planning along the way where I might get fuel in the most remote areas. I set fuel way-points in GAIA in advance since I had very limited fuel range. I created the route in about 500 mile segments to keep it manageable. I exported a .gpx file of each segment and then import those segments into Google Maps. That is what I shared in the link above and it was my reference anywhere along the way. Occasionally, when I would come into a populated area with cell service I would use Google Maps and the search feature to locate things like food or lodging. I also used freecampsites.net/ in the planning stages and along the way. Most of the areas far up north had many camping options. I set gps way-points at every imaginable possible camping area along my route. GAIA GPS also has some built in camping way-points that show up at certain zoom levels.

Eddy - Excellent video - very inspirational. I was up in Alaska in July of 2015 on my Yamaha FJR & I'll be going back in June of 2019 but on a different & smaller bike which will be a Honda NC 700X & looking forward to it. I've already been on a 28 day 8803 mile trip with it in which I did part of the TAT out in Colorado. My issue is that we have about the same amount of gas as my tank is 3.7 gallons & i get about 62 to 65 mpg & once as high as 72. So I'll be carrying a gas can also. I may have missed it but I believe in the beginning you had only a 2.5 gallon gas container & then towards the end I noticed a Rotopax container. Questions - did I just miss that in the beginning or did you pick it up along the way?? Also which gas container did you like the better & how often did you have to vent them?? I know you enjoyed your trip 7 I thank you for sharing it with us. Steve
@eddiehess6562
@eddiehess6562 5 лет назад
Steve, very perceptive picking up on the fuel cans. One of the greatest things of an adventure like this is the people you meet along the way. At the campground in Dawson City I met a French speaking Canadian on a GS 1200 from Quebec. His broken English was good enough for us to swap stories while I changed tires. I lamented that by the numbers I had just enough fuel to make the long stretch to Eagle Plains (250 miles). He said he had a rotopax that he had thrown in the dumpster. He had carried it up to Tuk but now no longer wanted to carry it. It was a perfectly good $80 fuel container. I thought the extra 1 gallon of insurance was worth carrying. The guy even went a dug it out of the dumpster for me and then gifted it to me. I felt blessed. One gallon would not have been enough on its own. I did not ever need to use it but it was nice to have. I used the bigger container several times. I never vented it. Neither container ever leaked either.

Thanks for taking me on that journey Eddie. Not too many videos will keep me watching for over 2 hours! Must have taken you days to upload it. It takes a lot of guts and skill to navigate all that mud, rain and gravel for so long on a bike, all the way to the Arctic Ocean, tenting it no less. You must be tough as nails. Then I see you change two bike tires at your campsite using only the tools you took with you, that's hardcore. Alberta looked absolutely amazing on camera, I can only imagine the wow factor when viewed by the naked eye going along that river through Athabasca and Banff. I could never do this journey on my scooter as it doesn't do well on gravel, much less the mud slicks you had to get through, you had the right bike for the job and glad it served you well. Glad you made it back safe and sound and all in one piece. Thanks for the camping tips too, for cooking, and that wind shield you made was a great idea. I'm doing a 9 day camp/bike trip this summer (God willing) and got some great ideas. Anyone planning to bike to Alaska needs to watch this video so they know the kind of challenges they will meet, although they don't have to take every back country goat path like Eddie did! Cheers Eddie, great ride.

Mike, the windshield is from Madstad.com. I do not know what they have for a KLR but I have been pleased with mine. There is some info here advrider.com/f/threads/husqvarna-701-super-moto-and-enduro.1086621/page-891#post-34260674. Not included is the rest of the story. I knocked my bike off of a work stand and broke the windshield before I left on this trip. I had shared this link with Mark at Madstad after I had created the post on ADV. He had seen my niggle about the bolts and spacers and when I ordered a replacement windshield he sent me corrected length bolts and spacers. I did not even ask for them. Wow! Outstanding customer service from Madstad.

@eddiehess6562 4 года назад
David, you have a great adventure in front of you. I do not have specific information documented but I did keep a journal and from that journal I created a ride report here: www.twtex.com/forums/threads/fort-worth-alaska-tuktoyaktuk-2018.119393/ If you have time you will might find some good bits of information there. I had the bike fitted with Oxford heated grips and much of the time I wore a Gerbings heated full jacket liner. The bike's electrical system wasn't quite up to using both on the highest power setting so I fitted a volt meter and balanced the usage to maintain power. Some days I needed just a little bit more:( I had to stop in Whitehorse and buy some ultra heavy wool under layers. When I got to the Arctic ocean it was still completely frozen. I shot all of the video with a helmet mounted Sony FDRX3000. Stills were shot with a very old Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT. I edited it all with Shotcut. I am very much an amateur. The music was originally more my favorites, Neil Young, The Eagles etc. RU-vid cops intervened. I ended selecting from a RU-vid library of approved open source music.

Depending how things go weather wise may then loop up to Deadhorse. If not done this year then that will be a trip for another year. Good luck on your adventure. And you have a great bike for this trip.

Thanks for taking us along Eddie. What a great adventure. My home is Fort Worth too. So far I have only adventured down to South Texas a bit, around Leakey. Don't believe my Kawasaki Concours would be a good choice for those forest roads you were traveling on. Riding my MC and fishing are my two favorite things and I have found a way to combine the two. Wonder if you have more rides planned? I need to see the Big Bend country, never been there. I think that will be my next excursion.

Update. I now have a Honda ST 1100 that has taken me to New Mexico and Colorado. I'm itching to go further to some places I've watched other riders travel through. Would love to do the Pacific Coast Highway from San Francisco up to the Canadian border.

Great work, Eddie. I loved it. It has inspired me to on a similar road trip. I especially love how you take the side roads and gravel roads. It makes us see the natural world much closely compared to if you had been on a highway. Thanks a lot for sharing your trip.

Check out Million Dollar Bogan, he and his friend each took a Road King all the way to Prudhoe Bay round trip. Others have also ridden Harley’s up there. It can be done.

Loved it. Thank you so much. I live in the UK but my wife and I rode the Dalton to Deadhorse on our KTM 990 in the summer of 2012. Watching this brought it back for us.

Two years. Whow time fly’s. I met you just after you got the Husky. I was riding my Suzuki DR650 . Don’t see many DUELSPORT riders around here but ya know what. I followed you home and we talked about an hour. You were telling me about this trip you were planning. Awesome to see you did it! I don’t ride much anymore.. getting older. I just subscribed to your channel and now I’m going to watch your trip. Thanks maybe I’ll see ya again like to hear your story!👍

Hi Sir, I just want to say thank you fro your excellent documentary....I've thoroughly enjoyed watching it every minute... One thing that stood out for me is your ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF G_D Almighty... This video made me appreciate and love G_d all the more. Truly, the Earth and all therein is the work of His fingers. Praise The Lord!

Food for thought in the future. A national forest is normally called a national forest because of all the trees one might see rather than open prairie...hahahahaha! Just wondering what your using for fuel. if you can only go 140 mile tank to tank how did you get from fort worth Tx to the canadian border and only stop once to refuel?

I have your video playing in my office at work. Simply because I can't see nature from inside the building. The 2 hr long video is worth it. I hope to be able to do this one day.

Thank you for the bright positive ride! I can't do long rides but you showed me places and experiences that make up for it. I'm from the Niagara Falls Canada area. I ride up the amazing Niagara Parkway following the Niagara river. I stopped as the river empties into Lake Ontario at Niagara-on-Lake. Your video is a breath of fresh air...thanks!!!

I rode up to Tuk a few weeks after you, by then they had dumped 6-8ins of gravel on the Tuk road..deep stuff to try and ride in. Ferry landing ramps were terrifying for me..LOL I had way deeper mud ruts than you..lol
