Wiener Neustadt in the state of Lower Austria / Republic of Austria is a beautiful and interesting city, the remains of the fortifications (city wall and towers) are particularly noteworthy.
- see also @MagisterQ.
The video shows the remains of the Wiener Neustadt brewery, which was built in the 18th century on the site of the demolished city wall and city gate.
Description:
The Wiener Neustadt city fortifications include the inner city of the municipality of Wiener Neustadt in Lower Austria.
History
The city walls and the main square in conjunction with the cathedral of Wiener Neustadt were marked out on Whitsun Sunday on May 24, 1192. On this day, the Babenberg Duke Leopold V was enfeoffed with Styria by the Hohenstaufen Emperor Henry VI. On the same day, the axis of the nave of the cathedral was aligned with the actual sunrise.
In the last decade of the 12th century, construction began on the city wall, originally about 8 m high, with a foundation about 10 m high, with one wall partially built using the opus spicatum technique. In the first quarter of the 13th century, the four corner towers, ten intermediate towers and four city gates were built. The outer fortifications of the suburbs were made with earthen ramparts, palisade fences and walls, each assigned to the four gates. The surrounding city moat was flooded by the Fischa, the Kehrbach and groundwater.
In the middle of the 15th century, the city wall was expanded with a battlemented battlement and six intermediate towers with ashlar masonry and embossed corners.
The Siege of Wiener Neustadt (1486-1487) was an 18-month siege by the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, the city fortifications were strengthened by the construction of new towers (the outer tower of the Fischauer Gate was signed in 1613, the outer tower of the Ungartor was dated 1614) and by the construction of bastions. (When the gates were demolished in the 19th century, their coat of arms stones were visibly walled into the facade of the town hall.) In addition, from 1551 to 1557, the master builder Johann Tscherte built vaulted cellars at the southwest corner of the south wall as casemates for storing weapons.
From 1783 onwards, the moats were filled in and the outer fortifications removed. After the city fire in 1834, the city gates were repaired. In 1837, the western wall near the casemates - along what is now Bahngasse - received the fifth city gate, the so-called Ferdinand Gate. In 1846, the Capuchin Bastion or Grübelschanze was demolished. In the third quarter of the 19th century, the city gates were demolished: the Neunkirchner Gate in 1851/1862, the Fischauer Gate in 1861, the Wiener Gate and Ungartor in 1864, and the Ferdinand Gate in 1873. In 1954, the Mühlturm/Bastei Tower was demolished due to the construction of Grazer Strasse. In 1979, the Deutschherrenturm was demolished to make room for the expansion of the General Public Hospital; a 1 m high remnant of a wall has been preserved in the courtyard of the physics department.
In 1995/1997, archaeological investigations were carried out in the area of the Neunkirchner Gate, and in 1997, excavations were carried out in the area of the former Fischauer Gate in Herzog-Leopold-Strasse. In 2016/2017, further excavations took place as part of the structural preparations for the Lower Austrian State Exhibition 2019.
