I've got the Neural DSP plugin. If anything, this video gave me insight for settings. I don't think I'll buy the real amp ever, but for $100 I get a great tone through headphones.

I bought the real amp and just couldn't really get into it so I sold it. I just recently bought the neural dsp plugin of it and am actually far more satisfied with the plugin version.

Another reason to love the channel: the honesty (Even if tone is subjective). I love the plugins but man even with those I tend to dial out their presence and EQ them more.

Neural DSP turned me onto this amp as I love the sound I get from it. I would’ve hoped the real amp would sound worlds better but after this, I think I’ll just stick with the plugin. Thanks Kyle!

The amp sounds great; tight, bright and aggressive. Maybe sounds a little bit too modern, but it's definitely a nice sound.

That is very much how it sounds in person and has been kind of a hallmark of any Fortin I have played: super quick and tight bass and enhanced upper mids/lower highs for alot of aggression and articulation. I can absolutely see how modern metal guys would love it. I prefer a bit of give under the fingers and bounce to the low end. Probably why I love my Bogner Ecstasy 101b. :)

I can hear the tone in this amp. I think your used to more aggressive metal tones. Whereas this is a hot rodded plexi with lots of air. You like more heavy thick. I hear the glassy edge and beautiful crunchy tones in this amp. I just think your playing it different context. So if you played Thin Lizzy, you would be right at home. I love your channel Kyle!

Run a Line 6 Helix into the clean channel of a Marshall JCM2000 using the Revv Blue in the Helix is the best modded Marshall I have heard in years. 😁

Sounds good. I actually just built one. Sounds about the same. I didn't know the Cali Was fortin. Very similar to cameron ccv which is what I thought I was building. Great circuit

@@NobotyBoi Affordable? Kemper and Axe FX lll, you have to spend at least 3k USD, Fishman are much more expensive than EMG. When if you know what you do, you can get the same or better tone with free plugins. They are just overrated and overhyped products, because a youtuber uses it, or a famous musician, then 90% of average guitarists believe that it is the best, and there is nothing better on the market. Consequently these companies are not idiots and exaggerate with prices. If you think that Fortín is expensive, and then you think that Fractal and Kemper have fair and super cheap prices, there is something wrong with you bro.

there's a Cali head local to me that couldn't be moved for $3k. That and if someone can name me 5 artists who use Fortin as their main amp I'd respect it more. Also their fanboys are the dumbest people I've talked to who'd rag on every other amp after owning a Fortin Grind and trying out their plugins.

That's lame about the speaker jack situation. For an amp that spendy there should be zero problems. I do have the Neural Fortin Cali plugin and it's probably my favorite of the Fortin suites. On OD1, my bright switch is a dummy control in the plugin also so it must be OD2 only. Good to know, I thought it was a bug. :) Overall I like the sound this thing gives. Anything from Soldano type shimmer and harmonic content to a pseudo Recto thing to stupidly bassy doom and fuzzy fun. The Grind and Hex in the plugin just make sense. I only wish they'd add a damn graphic EQ to tame those sizzle highs. I can do it in post, but why? Haha. I guess for mortals, a Diavlo would be in this ballpark as far as gain structure and such but just less harsh and actually findable on the web. Wish the hype train was not so huge around this one. It's a good amp but they definitely are hyped. No doubt. Great as always.

Is this a Jose style modded amp?....I had a VooDoo modded Marshall once that had a Jose style mod....I never could gel with it...I don’t know if it’s the diode clipping or what,but it just never sounded great to me...

Hey Kyle, for thrash tones, do you prefer a guitar with a hot pickup into an overdrive not doing too much or a medium/low output pickup guitar with the overdrive and amp doing more of the heavy lifting? Also, do you prefer an active pickup or a passive pickup? I'm newer to dialing in thrash tones and I'm liking drop C# tuning so far.

Actually you can achieve a good thrash tone with passive pickups, but it is undeniable that an EMG 81 is the holy grail for high gain. That's why it's a classic, and used thousands of times on most legendary recordings.

That whole low output pickup phase came from all the droptuned and 7 string guys. For C standard and above stick to medium/high output pickups. Duncan JB or custom V is my go too.

Which would you prefer, this Fortin Cali or a Splawn Nitro? Both amps you claimed not gelling with. Actually im quite surprised you being a Splawn guy,you not liking Nitros are a mystery to me,as to me the Nitros are the ultimate in tone..But im also a hardcore Recto guy as well,so i like my bottom end..

I don't dislike the Nitro, I just think the Quick Rod suits me much better. A lot more mid content and still plenty of low end to shake the walls

I never really got into the Fortin stuff; kinda disappointed when I actually tried one. For modern modded Marshall, I much prefer Friedman, both in tone and feel. Although it is kind of almost a cross between a Marshall with some Hi-Watt in there, ultimate "Modern Marshall" style immediately makes me think of Wizard. I had a Modern Classic, which I really miss....and it was all it was hyped up to be. I would love to see you review an MC2 or MTL.

@@belligerentamateur I owned Wizard MTL100, alongside with friedman jj100 and be100. I didn't like MTL at all, just too round and really weird feeling when playing, kinda too thick in a bad way, I missed sharpnes and articulation of friedmans. I bought it before could try and because it was hyped like the ultimate amp. Friedmans are way more the amp I was looking for and imo way more versatile. Although one thing that MTL has and I've never experienced after that - the thump when palm muting, it was more like a kick in your chest. Anyhow, I'm quite impressed with this Fortin I'm hearing here, I've checked other vids and was kinda meh, not really my thing but here it sounds great.

Cali is a great amp . But Wizard MTL2 is best modern Marshall . It’s insane how perfect it is . I got diezels Marshall’s mesas Bogner Engl but wizard is king . I’m blow away how much there just no bad frequencies

I agree. I got the wizard mc ii and it just sounds and feels like all the frequencies are “corrected?” If that makes sense. Love mine. Dying to try the MTL.

Honestly for the price I think this amp sounds like shit. I see them FS on the forum so I am scouring the videos. I HAVE heard a few clips that do sound good but the majority of the clips online for the Cali sound really bad to me.

I can settle this. LL Cool J's "Going Back to Cali" dropped in 1988. BIG's dropped in '97. Also, LL is "going back to Cali, Cali, Cali," and BIG is "going going back back to Cali Cali." The repetitions matter!

Cali isn't even an original design, it was a gutted Larry Dino that Mike cloned but the Fortin fanatics won't accept that and put Mike Fortin in the same category as Friedman/Soldano/James Brown/etc. Even his Grind pedal is just a simplified TC Electronic Preamp clone.

@@MaestroJerichoInteresting that you would try and say Mike Fortin isn’t in the same league as Dave Friedman because all he does is modify other people’s designs when that’s literally what Dave Friedman did. He just improved on and modded Marshall circuits, I wouldn’t call any of his designs original. You’re argument doesn’t hold any water
