Ep#10 of Forts of India: The Gingee Fort is located in Villupuram district, Tamil Nadu. It is known as the "Troy of the East" by the British, whereas locals have given the fort some notable names such as Senji, Chenji, Jinji or Senchi Fort.
Owing to its enormous structure the fort is fortified to the extent that Shivaji, the Maratha king, named it as the "most impregnable fortress in India". As you reach the fort, you realise that it has been located at the most strategic location which made it difficult for the enemies to enter its premise. The fort indeed is a result of genius minds.

Excellent tribute to great forts and history by DD..hats off! With all due respect to the 25 forts in this series, bit surprised that RAIGAD is missing! It was not only capital of Shivaji Maharaj, but was also called Gibraltar of East due to its impregnability. Would really appreciate an episode on RAIGAD.

Perhaps the second most famous fort in South India, next only to Golconda. The fort which was considered the most impregnable by Chhatrapati Shivaji. Most famous kings who ruled from here were Raja Tej Singh( Desingu Raja in tamil) and Rajaram Maharaj( Son of Shivaji Maharaj)

Sambhaji Maharaj died on March 11, 1689. it was taken from Rajaram Aurangzeb deputed Ghazi-ud-din Firoze Jung against the Marathas in the Deccan, and specially sent Zulfiqar Khan Nusrat Jung to capture the Jingi Fort. He laid siege to it in September, 1690. After three failed attempts, it was finally captured after seven years on 8 January 1698.

Amazing facts and history, but why the Jinji Nayaks did not cooperate with the Vijaya Nagar empire when Talikoti war was broke out, they betrayed Vijaya Nagar Kings by not sending army and supplies by making alliance with Madurai Nayakas. Aliya Ramaraya son in law of Krishna Devaraya met with ghastly defeat in the hands of Deccan sultans because of this betrayal, though the jinji got freedom from Vijaya nagara from this, but thereafter met with humiliating conquests by Adil Shahi, golkonda, Marathas, moguls and finally with europeons, what a misery!

Correct. By the time the fort was captured, Rajaram escaped.
