Dr Grace Vassallo, Consultant Paediatric Neurologist, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, Manchester
Dr Vassallo is a Consultant Paediatric Neurologist at the Royal Manchester Children`s Hospital UK. She is the clinical lead of the HSS NHS Complex NF1* service for the North of England. Her special interests include NF1/NF2 and paediatric neurovascular disease.
A cavernoma is made up of abnormal blood vessels and can be found in the brain and/or spinal cord and looks like a raspberry.
1 person in 600, in the UK, has a brain cavernoma without symptoms (asymptomatic). This equates to roughly 90,000 people - enough to fill Wembley Stadium. A spinal cavernoma is rarer than a brain cavernoma.

NF1/NF2 are two forms of Neurofibromatosis which is a genetic condition that causes tumours to
grow along your nerves. The tumours are usually non-cancerous (benign) but may cause a range
of symptoms.
