Fossil hunting a new area and a tricky fossil prep - fossil crabs, bird skull and a large nautiloid

I explore a Miocene coastal deposit and find a surprising number of fossil crabs even though I wasn't in an area known for them!
I prep the smaller crab I find, what a tricky one it turned out to be, very sticky and hollow in sections.
The bird skull wasn't in the wrap up as it had a large spider living in it so it has been banished to the garden.
Keep those comments coming!

I am in NZ too. I looked for fossils a number of times at Birdlings Flat, South of Banks Peninsula, but can see from your video, that I had no idea of their appearance. Thinking back, fifty years ago, as a teenager, I was there and had been sitting on a rock for some time facing the sea, when I became aware of a large Yellow Eyed Penguin, just two rocks away. It would have weighed similar to a small dog. It must have approached from behind. The bird was calm and unconcerned about me. I shifted onto the rock between us, then slowly reached out to see if I could touch it. Once within eight inches or so, it took a sideways swipe at my hand with its beak and hopped onto the next rock. I’ll never forget.

I love the way you keep in contact with the museum. You may discover a new species to the area or a new species all together! Great hunt as always!

Superb nautiloid. the fossil nautiloids where I live are rare and for some reason there’s often a little pie piece missing in a unusual place. Although one I found has a couple of bite marks from a shark on it so maybe the reason the little section is missing is because the shark bit it of😂
@MamlamboFossils
@MamlamboFossils 4 года назад
I've only found two before this trip, so they aren't common here either, and they always seem to be pretty broken when I find them, they must have been quite fragile. Amazing that you found one with some shark bites!

Mamlambo yes there is actually evidence that the remaining part of the shell that hadn’t been broken up likely slipped out of the Cretaceous sand tiger shark or goblin shark’s mouth and sank to the bottom of the ocean floor. Just a educated guess.

Amazing. New follower. Where are you? I am intrigued that the accepted theory is the smooth round rocks got that way by water erosion, yet the delicate legs of crabs stick out in places. Of rolled round like river rocks supposedly are they would be broken off. I would love to film some of these and cut a few in half on my lapidary saw. Thank you, very very cool!

Thanks so much John! There are quite a few theories of how the concretions form, is it precipitated around a nucleas or part of the decomposition process? I havent seen an explanation for the ones in this area yet. Hope you enjoy the videos!

I know this video is now 2yrs old, but you might consider running that nautiloid thru a rock saw, to remove the damaged portion and reveal the interior structure. Just a thought

How do we learn how to expose any Fossils from the rock they are inside ? Your videos are so down to earth and soooooo interesting

When adding consolidant, does any overflow make the matrix harder to remove?
@MamlamboFossils
@MamlamboFossils 4 года назад
Yeah, it goes on the matrix but doesn't seem to make it harder to remove. The layer is so thin that the scribe just goes straight through it. The glue is a bit more difficult if it gets on the rock.

It looked like that seagull was on a nest in the cliff and it collapsed, given the angle of its head. Love baby pukekos with their fluff.
@MamlamboFossils
@MamlamboFossils 4 года назад
Strangely, I don't often see sea gulls around. They seem to be more prevalent where people go regularly 🤔 your theory about being on a nest makes sense!

@@MamlamboFossils Then thinking about it some more, the shags you show can nest in trees, maybe its a shag? - The beak should tell you whether its a gull or shag.
