Fostex B16 Reel-to-reel repair introduction (and help request!)

Hello! First upload in a bit, this is just a quick video about my Fostex B16, which I am currently attempting to repair. It has some transport issues outlined in the video, and any advice would be welcome!
This will probably be the first part in a series of videos about getting this particular machine up and running again, so feel free to stick around to check those out too!

If the Tension arms aren't aligned the same, the issue you are having occurs. Replace the front plate. Push the tension arms up, one at a time, and check the gap against the face plate. the gap should be minuscule but needs to be even on both sides. The tension arms pull out and push in. Don't screw up and pull the out!

This Is solid advice. I suspected the issue may lie with the tension arms. I will check here as soon as my machine is out of storage! Thank you for the tips!

hi i never service the deck with a tape on i cover up the tape eyes each side of the rollers if you are going to do a test find someone with a basf agfa zoval 1/2 zonal i find the best to test the tapes are not ok there are alot of tec's out the the tascam 38 teac 80-8 44 is more my bag my fostex b16 have some bad LED note move all the good ones to the lower tracks i pulled all the bad LED units out of my e16 and put them in the m80 decks the fostex has a vu plug you can plug in a 16 channel it's easy to get a new 16 channel vu meter made note it will cost big money i put a new black panel were the uv LED were this will be running just wait for a right tec my akai mg14d i have to work on as well i have all the plans just take time

I would definitely replace the belt if you haven’t already. I have a working one and it’s great, my technician did the repairs for me though, it needed the voltage regulators replaced, as well as some other things.

The main belts for the reels? I think they are still good, but maybe the tension is incorrect.

I have the same machine and having a very similar issue. It plays for a few seconds but then gets super slow and stops. It reminds okay but wint fast forword for long.

Thanks for your comment, and how good to see that someone else has the same machine. I wonder, does holding up your brake bar improve your performance? I wonder if your transport will be better if you hold up, that could remove some variables. I can't help but think perhaps it's related to the bearings in the motor? Its interesting yours plays a little before stopping, I wonder if you just need a good lubrication, hmm.

I am currently repairing mine and I can assure you the dismounting operations are horrible...I need to replace the belt and I have some problems...

It seems like a monstrous disassembly. Have you managed to replace that belt?

i have the same machine now and it works but sometimes it nearly stops or slow down a lot .. perhaps the same error - i first will get a new tape hoping the problem is caused by the old tapes ..

Yes that seems like the same error as mine,, but yours is less aggressively stopping. I have worried about the tape I acquired too, did getting new tape solve your issue?

@@hyxtech8787 i cleaned everything and it is better with the new tape until now .. seem the old tape stick together a little bit ..

hi i have 2 myself and alot of tascam 38 decks yes i know what you are going on about i had a main logic pcb go in one of my tascam no i didi not part and sell it on i fixed it i am post a video i will get alot of trolls big times as it's no longer a mint and there's been alot updates note to keep tapes decks running alot of the time up date how the deck work you have to do please never troll any body we have to keep decks running

Howdy bob! Thanks for your comment, Yeah trolls suck. I am still working at this machine, havent had any more success. Tension arms are all aligned, it just doesn't want to move at all!
