When I clean cast iron that badly damaged I wash with coarse salt and a chainmail scrubber, rinse well , dry out the pans well with a towel, set on the stove on high until it starts to smoke, remove and oil the entire pan with vegetable oil . Put the pan into a 450 F oven for one hour. Turn off the oven and let the pan cool completely before removing. I usually give it another light coat of oil inside. My grandma said the keys to good cast iron is never soap, minimal water, and seasoning the pan . Mine never stick and clean up quick . For everyday clean up , No soap and NO water , just your salt and scrubber , remove residue with paper towel or old towel and then oil it .

How to clean cast iron skillet. Buff out the skillet, rinse out excess with hot scalding water, do this 3 times, heat the skillet on 350 degrees, then on the last heating when dry, add lard for heat treating. Make sure you put aluminum foil on the bottom rack of your oven, for excess dripping, then turn them over, and do the same process on the bottom. Let them cool down, and they use paper towels to wipe it down both sides while it's still warm to the touch. This is how my grandmother used to do her treatment of cast iron skillets. And the good thing is you can do it as a family project, You and Amber, and mama and Baby Jebus together

Holy Cow!!!! Prussia basin and pitcher might be an extremely BIG find. Those were used before there was running water. The water was warmed and brought in to the persons room, who would then pour it into the basin and that is how they cleaned up daily. MIL used to collect these and we got surprisingly large amounts of money for them. Who knew!

There's some good cast iron cleaning notes here. Two things to be careful about. (1) Putting cast iron in a self- cleaning oven will remove the factory seal which was part of original milling... what makes good cast iron good. It sometimes destroys the pan. There is no way to know if you have a pan that will be destroyed or be just fine. So, it's a risk you need to consider. (2) Leaving a cast iron pan in vinegar for too long can also remove the factory seal as well as damage the pan. The problem is the acid in the vinegar. So be careful how long you leave it in vinegar. General recommendation is no more than 3 hours, but I've done much longer. The key here is to check the pan periodically. Those pans didn't look too bad in the quick view, so maybe soap & a scrubby followed by re-seasoning with oil will do the trick. You can also use electrolysis which is also kind of crazy fun science to clean them and other things too. No matter what method you use, you do need to oil and re-season, or the pans will flash rust again. All this sounds complicated, but it's really not. Cast iron is the original teflon pan. If it is well seasoned & you cook at the right temperature, clean up & maintenance is easy. Again, from the quick view, those pans look like a set Wagner made of graduated size skillets. I sold a small size set with 3 graduated size pans, largest was about 4 inches in diameter, for $125 last year, so you may have some good value if it is that set since you have more & larger pans. If the pans are not marked, go to a website called the Cast Iron Collector. The website has great info on identifying old pan makers. Griswold and Wagner will bring good money, but there are some other pans that can be equally valuable. Having a lot of cast iron is not so odd. I have somewhere in vicinity of 25 pans, different sizes & types for different purposes... cooking everything from bicuits to cobblers to meat. I've also been cleaning & selling cast iron other folks consider trash for about 20 years.

Build a fire in your new backyard like a small burn pit. Put all your cast iron in it. Burn them for a bit. Let the fire go out. Pull the pans out and let them cool. Once the cast iron is cool, take inside and clean up. Just use hot water rinse and wipe out. You can use a small amount of dish soap to clean them. Rinse very well with hot water. You can dry them with just a paper towel. To "season the cast iron" Turn oven on to about 325 degrees. Put cast iron in the oven and let them dry out just about 5 minutes. After 5 minutes take the pans out, let cool and then put a nice amount of Crisco in each pan. You can cover with the plastic bowl covers. I have bought them at like Big Lots but I think any Dollar Store sells them. Good Luck and let me know if this works.

U can clean the cast iron pans in sink with really hot water, dawn dish soap, a steal wool scouring pad scrub entire skillet really good, rinse with really really hot water. Place on top of stove turn on Burner and let heat dry skillet completely, then shut off Burner take a couple paper towels and put vegetable oil in skillet use paper towels to rub oil all over entire skillet. It's clean from that point everytime u use the skillets clean and dry the same way and oil it after every use. If the skillet are original cast iron skillets made in usa they are worth money. Cause the ones made now are not made in USA and they are not heavy like real USA made ones.

Saw an interesting TikTok video where they used lemon wedges, vinegar, and baking soda. Vinegar should pretty much fill the pan with the lemon wedges before you add the baking soda. Bring it to a boil. The lemon wedges should start to turn brown, so you may need to add more vinegar and baking soda til that happens. When the lemon wedges start to turn brown, turn off the heat. Take out the lemon wedges and rinse the pan. After you rinse, take a paper towel and whip down the pan. Based on the TikTok video and tested by another TikTok user, this should bring the pan back to almost new status.

To cure cast iron, I rub the inside and outside of the pan with bacon grease. I guess other types of grease will work as well. Anyway, put in the over for an hour at 350 degrees. After the hour is up, let the pans cool, then lightly rub the inside of the pan with bacon grease, veggie oil etc., using a paper towel. You should have a black shiny glean on the inside. I have been using cast iron frying pans for over 60 years and that's how I cure my pans. Love your videos, congrats on all you found in this locker. God Bless you.

I love watching you guys. You are good people. The cast iron is easy to clean. It needs cleaned and seasoned. Scrub them really good with dish soap and water, you can use brillo pads on the stubborn rust. Once it's clean and dry, coat it with a thin coat of Crisco, or bacon fat, put it upside down in a hot oven, like 400 degrees for 30 minutes. You don't have to be exact with times or amounts. If you are going to keep some, fry bacon in it a couple of times and it will be good to go! Next, the blue pitcher and dish are for a wash stand. Before there was running water, people kept the pitcher full of water and the bowl was to was in. Keep up the good work and congrats on your new home!!

@@robinandrews1300 if it is rusty and needs to be stripped, then yes I do. I've been using cast iron as long as I was big enough to stand on a chair and reach to stovetop. I'm now 59 years old and have 2 generations of cast iron users behind me. It is not delicate, for crying out loud! It is very concerning to me that you all are worried about hurting this pan that came out of a nasty, moldy storage unit. You don't have any idea what else it has been in contact with. I would want to strip it down and reseason it so I would know it's clean before I used it. Anything less is just nasty to me. I have my great grandmamas cast iron Dutch oven. First rule never use dish soap on your cast iron. To “season” them buy coarse salt and fill the pan with salt to cover the bottom. Place on a high flame. Use a wooden spoon to scrape the rust off until the salt burns lightly. Let it cool. Throw away the burnt salt. Use some oil, vegetable is fine , wipe the pan clean. Place in and oven to store. If you store otherwise place a towel in between the stacked pans. To clean after usage, rinse with hot water and wipe dry until clean. You’re sitting on a treasure hon. Thanks for the videos!

I like watching your videos and appreciate what you do with your yard sales. I have to admit I get really nervous when you handle things too quickly and potentially devalue something. I saw several things of value that you set aside as probably being worthless. Glad you have so many knowledgeable subscribers who can help you with values. If you took an antique wash stand to the dump that held the very likely antique wash basin and pitcher that's sad. It could have been restored? Good luck with each and every unit. Hope you continue to do well.

Yes you can clean rusted cast iron here's how: 1. Soak each piece of rusty cast iron in a solution of one part vinegar and one part water. 2. Using the brush, test each piece after 30 minutes to an hour to see if the rust is coming off. ...3. Once you have scrubbed the skillet clean of rust, 4. rinse it thoroughly with water. 5. Dry skillet completely, and reseason.this is how to do that: Clean. 1. Scrub the pan well in hot, soapy water. ...2. Oil. Rub a thin layer of vegetable oil or melted shortening over the entire pan. ...3. Bake. Preheat the oven to 350˚F. ...4. Cool. After one hour, turn off the oven and leave the pan in the oven to cool completely.. There ya go .🥰💜💚💜💚

I heard this about 50 years ago and when you said about cleaning the cast iron pan It all came back to me. You put the empty pan on the stove until it’s very hot it will start to take the colour of the impurity in the iron and then you get a bamboo brush and scratch the bottom of the pan all over. You then tip away all the salt and add a small amount of oil heat it up and the using a piece of kitchen roll keep rubbing it until it is sparkling clean. If you just look up cast iron pans and salt it will explain a lot better than I can. Good luck with that x

When an iron pan rusts, clean, even sand it down to the original cast iron. Coat the entire piece in oil. Put in the oven and heat for a period of time until the skillet turns black. (This used to be done on an open flame fire). This is called seasoning the skillet. If done properly you have the original type of "teflon" and whatever you cook on it with grease or butter will NOT stick. Avoid letting burnt debris coat the skillet. Wash by hand in sink with dishwashing soap. Cooking with the iron skillet is actually a culinary art. Not to mention it adds iron to the diet.

The blue Prussian pitcher and bowl were used for washing up, face, hands. whatever, before they had running water in homes. The pitcher would have water in it and you would pour it into the bowl and wash up. They were beautiful.

Depending on what type of cast iron you have there, they could be up-to 50 bucks.. Look for Griswald or Wanger.. The way to clean them, when they look like that, is with hot soapy water with steelwool, then you want to treat them.. Wipe down with cooking oil, then stick them in the oven at 400 for 1 hour, let cool. Wash with only hot water, they may need another treatment, wipe with cooking oil, back in the oven, 400 for 1 hour. Wash again with hot water, no soap... Then never use soap again, once they are treated..

Those iron skillets are all salvageable there are tons of RU-vids to help I also suggest getting a chain mail stainless steel scrubber available on Amazon for around $10 don’t get the one with the sponge inside just the flat one works best. 🙂

That big blue pitcher and basin has to be pre-1930s because Prussia was no long a country in about 1935. So it's probably around 100 years old.

To clean cast iron, wipe it inside and out with butter or shortening. Line the bottom of your oven and turn it on to 250°. Turn pan upside down in the oven and let them bake for an hour. Turn off oven and let pans cool. Wipe them down inside and out and they are ready to use. I have seen cast iron seasoned in a campfire. Just bury in the wood of the last fire at night and rinse and use in the morning.

The largest cast iron skillet could be worth 3k$! RU-vid University can help you remove rust and dirt to restore the collection of cast iron. That's a great find, thank you for sharing! the pitcher and basin was made when there was not running water it was used to bathe. It is probably from 300-1200$ depending on condition

That blue pitcher and basin was from before running water. Prussia is a country that no longer exists. You would have a dry sink in your room and that would sit in it filled with water for washing your face and shaving. Cool find.

The blue porcelain "pitcher" together with the tray is a set. I stood in your room containing water and was used for washing yourself - before there were bathrooms, so either it is really old or it is a replica.

@@TreasureHuntingWithJebus There was a mirror that you pulled in first few videos that I believe goes with it. It was oval an had the wood dangling lol. Those are worth a nice chunk of not damaged. I paid 350 for mine. My bad. I haven't watched the whole video yet. Lol. But if it has the stand with the bowl and pitcher then it would be worth alot. And the mirror goes to the stand. Sorry to confuse. I'm still watching 😉😜

With your cast iron what you have to do is run some really hot soapy water then wash the pans then take areal strong scouring pad or sand paper and scrub of any rust rinse in clean water then dry very well. After all that take vegetable oil and a paper towels and coat then inside of the pan and place in a 300 degree oven and bake it for an hour after times up turn off oven and let cool to room temperature, rewash in just soap water after drying coat in a thin coat of oil. Or just sell them rusted and let the owners do it!
