Here is a short video on a vcouple of Terra Cotta Sun faces I had lying around. I had planned to use them for making silicon or laytex molds for casting cement or plaster when I had the bright idea of trying to use them as glass slump molds. It worked great, so I thought a video was in order. Tell me what you think. The name of the face distributer and a couple of links are listed below. If you find this video interesting, pleasse hit the "Like" button and subscribe to my channel. Thanks for watching. Capt Mike

Great ideas!! I was wondering how the terra cotta pots would do in the kiln. I got kiln shelves from two different companies that were made in Mexico and every single one was bowed and scratched up!! I was soo disappointed and ordered them again through each company and the second sets were just as bad.

The glass I used was from Wissmach. It had some type of irrediscent coating. Don't know if it is still available.

Love your idea and your irid piece looks fantastic. I've done drapes over a terracotta pot but I elevated mine on a few kiln posts. Did you do the same with the sun face? Also, did you use a single piece of glass? After I watched your video, I did a bit of research and found that they fire terracotta over 2000F plus. I would check it for cracks after every firing but it should stand up well. Beats forking out huge bucks for a ceramic mold. Thanks for a great idea!

I laid the mold on the kiln shelf. I cut a 3mm piece of Wissmach irid (don't know if they make it any more) cut to a circle of the right size. l;Thanks for watching!

Hey Capt. Mike. what did you use for the Whoop De Doo mold on Susan's video? I would like to mess with it but my kiln is only 8"x7.75". I saw your video on the dental mix with silica and that looks pretty simple, I would guess you to let the investment harden a bit before you begin sloppin' the investment in. Maybe a video! Hint, hint. Really learn a lot from you folks!

For the "whoop de Doo molds I used mid to high fire clay *low fire will work) and rolled it about 1/4 to 3/8 inches thick then placed it over the plastic pipe. And yes, I let the investment mix completer cure/dry befor introducing the fusable material. I thought I did a video on that, but I check and see if I am only having a brain fart.

I'll see if I can throw together a short video of some of the results I am getting with these molds.

I have a few questions, do you fire these in a kiln with a digital control panel, or do you just check the temperature consitantly until you hit slump temperature? I have a "Manual" kiln where I have to turn the knobs to fire to temp., Do you think my kiln would work fine with slumping glass? Do you use sheets of glass to slump, or do you put crushed glass on the molds, if the second l, how much do you add?

I do use a kiln with a digital controler, especiallu if I am firing large pieces. You can get away with a lot in a reqular kiln if the things you are firing are small. I do add frit to many of my firings.

@CaptMike
@CaptMike 3 года назад
Unless you plan to produce hundreds of the cast I don't think copyright would be a problem. Of course it depends on who made the original.
